LVMH Prize 2018 in Paris

CFDA Award 2018 in New York

At the CFDA AWARD Gala in New York, new trends in international fashion emerged.
A paradigm shift in fashion
At this year’s CFDA Awards Ceremony, held at the Brooklyn Museum in New York, the signs of a new era in fashion business were unmistakable: it’s not just the creative mind of a designer who decides on a fashion collection, but a team of people. They try to analyze all the trends in the world that they collect from the kids on the street, the musicians and above all the so-called influencers, and bring them into new creations.
Now, gathering informations to make something new is as old as art itself. But what’s new is that it’s no longer processed and spun out by just one person, but rather by a team whose members have equal access to their input. Well-known designers are only hired as „creative directors“ to oversee everything and finally present it to the press. The fashion brand KENZO was one of the first big houses to initiate this trend when it hired not a single new designer in 2011, but rather the California-based team „Opening Ceremony“. Since then, KENZO has become much younger and adapted to the spirit of the times.
This year’s award ceremony for the CFADA goes in the same direction. In the category MENSWEAR DESIGNER OF THE YEAR won not a single designer, but the label SUPREME (cooperation also with Louis Vuitton, kultur24 reported), which started as a skateboard manufacturer in 1994 in New York with a few sweat and T-shirts sold in the shop. But in today’s fashion world, it’s no longer just about a special design, but it must be“hip“ in the first place.

Social Media and Influencer
What is also new is that quality no longer matters, but the question of whether this design is important on the social media and receives many followers and likes. For today, influencers are more in the limelight than creative minds in the back room. This also shows in the model business: Only the girl is still booked, which can prove many followers on Instagram. Whether she has a pretty face or extra long legs hardly matters anymore.
The boss of SUPREME, James Jebbia, was very surprised about winning his award. During the acceptance speech at the CFDA Gala on Monday, he also said that he had never seen SUPREME as a fashion brand and never considered himself a fashion designer.
In the category WOMENSWEAR DESIGNER OF THE YEAR Raf Simons from Calvin Klein won, at the ACCESSORY DESIGNER OF THE YEAR the sisters Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen from The Row and the young talent award went to Sander Lak from Sies Marjan.
Additional prizes in subordinate categories went to Donatella Versace, Naomi Campbell, Diane von Furstenberg, Narcisco Rodriguez, Edward Enninfull (first colored VOGUE editor-in-chief in Britain) and Carolina Herrera.
LVMH Prize 2018 in Paris
At almost the same time, a prize for young up-and-coming designers was awarded in Paris by the luxury goods manufacturer LVMH (Louis-Vuitton-Hennessy-Group). The American actress and Oscar winner Emma Stone (face of the spring / summer campaign of Louis Vuitton) presented the award to the Japanese Masayuki Ino. The award brought him at least 300,000 euros. But he also sees himself more as a graffiti artist than as a fashion designer. How many likes does he have on Instagram?
Did I tell you that Kim Kardashian won a CFDA Award 2018 for Best Influencer? – That says it all!
