Der Zauberer von Oz an der Komischen Oper

Eine moderne Oper über ein berühmtes Märchen in einer perfekten Inszenierung.
Hintergrund
Was für uns das Märchen von „Hänsel & Gretel“ ist, ist für die Amerikaner „Der Zauberer von Oz“. Der deutschstämmige Lyman Frank Baum hatte sich zum Einschlafen seiner Kinder immer neue Geschichten ausgedacht, darunter die Geschichte vom Zauberer von Oz. Irgendwann dachte sich Baum, diese Geschichten zu publizieren und so erschien im Jahre 1900 das Buch „The Wonderful Wizard of Oz“. Es wurde neben „Alice im Wonderland“ von Lewis Carroll zum bekanntsten Märchen Amerikas.
Kaum war das Buch erschienen wurde bereits ein Musical daraus und die ersten Verfilmungen folgten. Den größten Erfolg hatte dabei die Verfilmung von 1939 mit der bis dahin unbekannten Judy Garland. Die Filmmusik dazu mit dem Welthit „Over the Rainbow“ schrieb Harold Arlen. Dieser Film ging um die Welt und machte das Märchen vom Zauberer von Oz auf allen Kontinenten bekannt. Die bisher letzte große Verfilmung, allerdings mit einer stark veränderten Handlung, stammt aus dem Jahre 2013 mit James Franco in der Rolle des „Oz“, Mila Kunis als böse Hexe des Westens, Michelle Williams als gute Hexe des Südens und Rachel Weisz als böse Hexe des Ostens.

Handlung
Die junge Dorothy lebt mit ihrer Tante und ihrem Onkel auf einer kleinen Farm in einer kargen Landschaft in dem US-Bundesstaat Kansas. Bei einem Unwetter kommt ein Tornado auf und wirbelt das gesamte Haus zusammen mit Dorothy und ihrem Hund Toto hoch in die Lüfte. Nach einiger Zeit landen sie etwas unsanft in einem fremden Land mit Namen „Oz“. Hier gibt es allerhand Zauberwesen, böse und guten Hexen, sprechende Mäuse, fliegende Affen und ein mächtiger Zauberer mit Namen „Oz“.
Als Dorothy den Bewohnern ihr Leid klagt, sie möchte doch bitte wieder in ihr Heimatland zurückkehren können, ist die einhellige Meinung, dies könne nur der Zauberer von Oz bewerkstelligen, der in einem Palast aus Smaragden lebt. Auf ihrem Weg dorthin begegnet sie drei Gleichgesinnten, die auch alle spezielle Wünsche haben: Die Vogelscheuche, die nicht nur Stroh, sondern auch Klugheit in ihrem Kopf haben möchte, der Blechmann, dem in seiner gepanzerten Hülle ein Herz fehlt und der ängstliche Löwe, der endlich mutig sein will.
Beim Zauberer von Oz angekommen, stellt dieser die Bedingung, dass die vier erst die böse Hexe des Westens erledigen müssten. Dorothy schafft es mit einem Trick die böse Hexe unschädlich zu machen, doch als sie zum Zauberer zurückkehren stellt sich heraus, dass dieser ein ganz normaler Mann aus Ohama ist, der durch eine missglückte Ballonfahrt in das Zauberreich von „Oz“ gelangte. Doch er will helfen und reaktiviert seinen Ballon. Dorothy verpasst allerdings den Flug, weil sie nach ihrem Hund Toto suchen muss, der natürlich nicht alleine zurückbleiben soll.
In ihrer Not wendet sie sich an die gute Hexe des Südens, die ihr verrät, dass die silbernen Schuhe, die sie am Anfang der bösen Hexe des Ostens entwendet hat, magische Kräfte besitzen. Und durch sie gelangt Dorozhy dann endlich doch nach Kansas zurück.

Kritik
Seit 14 Jahren präsentiert die Komische Oper jedes Jahr zur Weihnachtszeit eine neue Kinderoper. Letztes Jahr waren es „Die Bremer Stadtmusikanten“(kultur24 berichtete) und dieses Jahr „Der Zauberer von Oz“. Dabei setzten sie wieder auf den zeitgenössischen italienischen Komponisten Pierangelo Valtinoni (*1959), der hier bereits sehr erfolgreich „Pinocchio“ (2006) und „Die Schneekönigin (2010) als Bühnenwerk zur Aufführung brachte.
Die märchenhafte Handlung ist wunderbar umgesetzt, die Melodien erinnern an amerikanische Musicals aus den 50er und 60er Jahren, wie „West Side Story“ oder „My Fair Lady“. Auch die Inszenierung von Felix Seiler passt hervorragend zur Idee des Stücks. Tolle Videoeffekte, eine stimmlich und spielerisch überzeugende Dorothy (Alma Sadé) und phantasievolle Kostüme (Linda Schnabel). Ganz besonders hat mir das Bühnenbild (Nikolaus Webern) gefallen, dessen Smaragdstadt an die Megacity aus dem Film „Metropolis“ von Fritz Lang oder an die expressionistischen Bauten aus dem Film „Dr. Caligari“ von Robert Wiene erinnert. Ganz großes Kino! Wobei die perfekt gemachten Videoeinspielungen zum guten Gesamtbild beitragen.
Fazit: Ein weiteres Highlight für die Berliner Opernszene. Und nicht nur für Kinder, sondern für alle Opernliebhaber jeden Alters sehr zu empfehlen!

The Wizard of Oz at the Komische Oper Berlin

A modern opera about a famous fairy tale in a perfect staging.
Background
What the fairy tale of „Hänsel & Gretel“ is for the Germans is „The Wizard of Oz“ for the Americans. Lyman Frank Baum (with German roots) had always come up with new stories for the falling asleep of his children, including the story of the Wizard of Oz. At some point Baum thought of publishing these stories and in 1900 he published the book „The Wonderful Wizard of Oz“. This story became one of America’s best-known fairy tales, alongside „Alice in Wonderland“ by Lewis Carroll.
As soon as the book was published, it was already a musical and the first movie productions followed. The greatest success was the film adaptation of 1939 with the (nearly) unknown Judy Garland. The film music with the world hit „Over the Rainbow“ was written by Harold Arlen. This movie went around the world and made the tale of the Wizard of Oz known worldwide. The most recent major film adaptation, but with a highly altered storyline, is from 2013 with James Franco in the role of „Oz“, Mila Kunis as the evil witch of the West, Michelle Williams as the good witch of the South and Rachel Weisz as the wicked witch of the East.
Story
The young Dorothy lives with her aunt and uncle on a small farm in a barren landscape in the US state of Kansas. In a storm, a tornado comes up and whirls the whole house together with Dorothy and her dog Toto high in the air. After some time they land a bit rough in a foreign country called „Oz“. There are all kinds of magical creatures, bad and good witches, talking mice, flying monkeys and a mighty wizard named „Oz“. When Dorothy complains to the residents that she wants to return to her homeland, the everyone says that only the Wizard of Oz, who lives in a palace of emeralds, can help her. On her way to the mysterious town of „Oz“, she encounters three guys, who also have special wishes: the scarecrow, who wants to be intelligent, the tin-man, who wants to have a heart in his armored shell and the timid lion, who wants to be courageous. Arrived at the Wizard of Oz, he provides the condition that the four would have to eliminate first the evil witch of the West. Dorothy manages to neutralize the evil witch with a trick, but when they return to the wizard, it turns out that he is just a normal man from the US state of Ohama who came from a failed balloon ride into the Magic Kingdom of „Oz“. But he wants to help and reactivates his balloon. However, Dorothy misses the flight because she has to look for her dog Toto, who of course should not to be left alone. In her distress, she turns to the good witch of the South, who tells her that the silver shoes she stole from the beginning of the wicked witch of the East possess magical powers. And through them, Dorothy finally returns to Kansas.
Critics
For 14 years, the Komische Oper presents a new children’s opera every Christmas season. Last year it was „The Bremen Town Musicians“ (kultur24 reported) and this year „The Wizard of Oz“. The opera is written by the contemporary Italian composer Pierangelo Valtinoni (born 1959), who had already successfully brought to stage „Pinocchio“ (2006) and „Die Schneekönigin“ (2010). The fairytale-like plot is beautifully executed, the melodies are reminiscent to American musicals from the 50s and 60s, such as „West Side Story“ or „My Fair Lady.“ Also, the staging of Felix Seiler fits in perfectly with the idea of the play. Awesome video effects, a vocally and playfully convincing Dorothy (Alma Sadé) and imaginative costumes (Linda Schnabel). I particularly liked the stage design (Nikolaus Webern), whose emerald city was inspired by the megacity from the movie „Metropolis“ by Fritz Lang or the expressionist buildings from the film „Dr. Caligari „by Robert Wiene, whereby the perfectly made video recordings contribute to the good overall picture.
Conclusion: Another highlight for the Berlin opera scene. An opera not only for children, but for all opera lovers highly recommended!
