(Quelle: United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, UNODC, 2017).

„Die Gerechten“ (The righteous) in the Maxim Gorki Theater Berlin

Can you kill for a higher goal?
This question already occupied many philosophers, historians and scholars alike. Actually, the answer seems quite natural, namely no. But this self-evident is not true for everyone, as we know.
Every year, around 500,000 people are killed by force worldwide, with the killing rate per 100,000 population being highest in North and South America at 16% and lowest in Europe at 3%. The highest number of kills in 2016 in absolute terms reached India with 42,678, Brazil with 61,283, then Mexico with 24,599 and South Africa with 19,016, Nigeria with 17,843, Venezuela with 17,778, the USA with 17,250 Russia with 15,561, in Germany 963 and in France with 875. (Source: United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, UNODC, 2017).
The most common causes of murder are: jealousy, greed, hurt vanity and revenge. One third of all murders happen in the home or family.
But what about the question quoted above for the „higher“ goal? Whereby the word „higher“ would have to be defined in more details. In the text of the play Dora Dulebow (played by Lea Dräger) says: „The revolt is the basis of the political.“
So may political reasons give you the right to kill? The fact is that almost all political revolutions and upheavals happened by force, simply because the kings an dictators did not want to voluntarily vacate their place.
The most famous revolt in history is certainly the French Revolution of 1789, when it ushered in a change of policy that would grasp all of Europe and finally bring democracy after centuries of monarchical and autocratic systems. On July 14, 1789, enraged citizens stormed the state prison on the Bastille and freed 6 prisoners (including Marquis de Sade). 98 people were killed. It was the beginning of the revolution during which not only King Ludwig the VXI. and his wife Marie-Antoinette lost their lives, but also about 300,000 more people.

Albert Camus wrote a drama in 1949, which was based on a true story: In 1905, a group in Russia called „Social Revolutionaries“ made an attack in which the Grand Duke Sergei was killed. He refers to the novel by Boris Savinkov in 1931, in which he describes the related in the assassination discussions of the assassins. The terrorists discuss before and after the action what is allowed and if there are limits to the bombing.
Albert Camus divided his play „The Just“ into five chapters. 1. Meeting of the terrorists, planning of the attack. 2. The assassination: While two of the group are watching the action from the apartment, two are on site as observers, one, Kaljayev, is said to throw the bomb. But he does not, because in the car next to the Grand Duke and his two nephews sit. Then the group dicutes what is allowed and what is not. Only Stepan would kill children too. 3. Kalyaev tries again two days later and succeeds. At the same time, he is arrested. 4. In prison, Kaljajew first receives a visit from police commissioner Skouratov, who offers him to spare Koljajwe’s life if he betrays his comrades. Koljajwe refuses. Then comes the wife of the Grand Duke to persuade the assassin to admit his act as a murder. But Koljayev refuses and declares that the assassination of the Grand Duke was an act of justice. 5. In the apartment, the rest of the group drumming and wondering if Kolyayev might betray them. But an informant denies this. Then Dora announces that she will detonate the next bomb and die for it. The real Dora, Rachel Vladimirovna, shot herself in exile in Paris in 1908 …
criticism
Director Sebastian Baumgarten lets commute the five protagonists of the piece always between the present and the character of the drama. If they are in the present time, they are dressed in a blue jumpsuit and speak generally of terrorist attacks in recent years. Above all the questions about religion and the 10 commandments of the Old Testament are discussed with the question, which role the first commandment, „Thou shalt not kill“ occupies thereby. As we know today, Arab terrorists are particularly fond of referring to their religion, indeed they even cite it as the reason for their act. No wonder: Prophet Muhammad writes in the Quran: „Kill the unbelievers!“
Baumgarten manages not only to make the mood too heavy with little slapstick inserts, but also by funny puns and to treat the audience to comic moments in the gloom. Particularly noteworthy here is the actor Jonas Dassler as Woinow, who recently came from the Ernst-Busch drama school to the Gorki Theater and whom we already know by his role in „Danton’s death“ at the Schaubühne, kultur24 reported.
Also, the interplay of music (Daniel Regenburg on the piano and on the keyboard) with video projection (Hannah Dörr) and the stage equipped with few elements (Jana Wassong) works great.
A really impressive evening with a great, up-to-date piece, great actors and strong statements. So far, the best new production in the season 2018/2019.
