„WONDER WHEEL“ – Drama – USA – 2017

Wie ein Uhrwerk kommt jedes Jahr ein neuer Film von Woody Allen in die Kinos. Unglaublich, wie der mittlerweile 80-zig jährige dieses Pensum schafft. Das Drehbuch schreiben, das Geld auftreiben und den Film drehen + Schnitt und Nachbearbeitung – und das alles in 12 Monaten.
Dabei steht ihm sicher ein eingespieltes Team zur Verfügung. Ob er dabei jedes Mal das filmische Niveau halten kann steht auf einem anderen Blatt. Seit dem Film „Match Point“ mit Scarlett Johansson vor 12 Jahren wendet sich Woody Allen immer mehr von seinem eigentlichen Genre, der Komödie, ab. In seinen Spätwerken interessieren ihn mehr die Abgründe der Menschen, ihre Fehler, ihre Schwächen.
So auch in diesem Film: Das Ehepaar Ginny (Kate Winslet) und Humpty (Jim Belushi) lebt seit Jahren nur noch nebeneinander her. Beide arbeiten sie in einem Vergnügungspark am Strand von Coney Island in der Nähe New Yorks. Sie als Bedienung in einem Restaurant, er als Kartenabreißer. Eines Tages taucht ihre verschollene Tochter Carolina (Juno Temple) auf, die von Gangstern verfolgt wird. Sie sucht Unterschlupf bei ihren Eltern, die aber wenig mit ihr anfangen können. Nebenbei hat sich die Mutter in den jungen Bademeister Mickey (Justin Timberlake) verguckt, der sich jetzt aber mehr für ihre Tochter interessiert…Tolle Bilder aus der Epoche der 50-er Jahre in Amerika und ein außergewöhnliches Schauspielerensemble. Nur die Story will nicht so richtig zünden. Trotzdem allemal besser als die meisten Neuerscheinungen auf dem Filmmarkt.

„THE COMMUTER“ – Action – USA – 2018

Wieder ein Action Film mit Liam Neeson. Seit ihn der Regisseure Jaume Collet-Serra mit dem Film „Unknown Identity“ (spielt teilweise in Berlin) vor gut 10 Jahren als Action Held entdeckte, macht er nun in diesem Genre einen Film nach dem anderen („Taken 1, 2 und 3“). Wenn man bedenkt, dass der mittlerweile 63-jährige Neesen mal vor 30 Jahren den Oskar Schindler in dem gleichnamigen Holocaust-Drama von Steven Spielberg spielte…
In diesem Film „The Commuter“ geht es um den Pendler (=commuter) Michael MacCauley (Liam Neeson), der jeden Tag von einem kleinen Vorort nach Manhattan zur Arbeit fährt. Eines Tages setzt sich eine attraktive Frau (Vera Farmiga) ihm gegenüber und fängt ein Gespräch an. Zunächst ganz harmlos, macht sie ihm nach kurzer Zeit ein Angebot: Wenn er in diesem Zug einen Mann namens Prynne finden würde, von dem man nicht weiß wie er aussieht, der aber nicht zu den üblichen Pendlern gehört und deshalb auffallen müsste, würde er 100.000 Dollar bekommen. Andernfalls würde es ihm und seiner Familie schlecht ergehen. Das Drama im Zug beginnt.

„JULIAN SCHNABEL: A PRIVATE PORTRAIT“ – Doku – USA, Italien – 2017

Julian Schnabel gilt als einer der wichtigsten Künstler unserer Zeit. 1951 in Brooklyn/ New York geboren, wuchs er in Texas auf und kehrte dann als junger Mann in seine Heimatstadt zurück. Dort nahm er an einem Kunstprogramm des Whitney Museums teil. Den Rest über Kunst und das Malen brachte er sich selbst bei. Seine erste Einzelausstellung hatte er 1979 in der renommierten Galerie Mary Boone, bei der alle Exponate schon vor Eröffnung verkauft wurden. Bereits ein Jahr später nahm er an der Biennale in Venedig teil. Seine Malkunst wird als neo-expressiv beschrieben.
Besondere Beachtung fand in den 90er Jahren seine Hinwendung zum Medium Film. Zunächst drehte er 1996 eine Dokumentation über den früh verstorbenen New Yorker Maler Jean-Michel Basquiat (dieser wird demnächst in einer großen Retrospektive im Museum Schirn in Frankfurt gezeigt, kultur24 wird darüber berichten), danach folgte „Bevor Night Falls“ mit Javier Bardem, „Taucherglocke und Schmetterlinge“ mit Mathieu Amalric, die Doku „Lou Reeds Berlin“ und 2010 dann „Miral“, eine Geschichte aus Palästina, in der Hauptrolle mit Freida Pinto („Slumdog Millionaire“).
Zurzeit arbeitet er an einem Film über das Leben Vincent van Goghs in dessen Zeit in Arles. Erscheinungsdatum ist noch unbekannt. Vielleicht zu den Filmfestspielen in Cannes 2018? Jury Präsidentin wird dort übrigens die australische Regisseurin Cate Blanchett.
Zuletzt konnte man in Berlin Arbeiten von Julian Schnabel in der Galerie Circle Culture bei Johann Haeling von Lanzenauer sehen, kultur24 berichtete.
Julian Schnabel ist zurzeit mit dem dänischen Fotomodell Lykke May Anderson (*1982) liiert. Beide haben seit 2 Jahren einen gemeinsamen Sohn. Julian Schnabels Lebenspartnerin ist damit sogar 10 Jahre jünger als die Lebensgefährtin seines Sohnes Vito, Heidi Klum (*1973).
Ein Film für Liebhaber und Kunstliebhaber…

The second cinema weekend of the year features a new Woody Allen, a new action movie starring Liam Neeson („Taken 1, 2 and 3“) and a documentary about New York artist Julian Schnabel

Like clockwork, Woody Allen releases a new movie every year. Incredible, how the 80-year-old manages to do this. Write the script, raise the money and shoot the film + editing and editing – and all in 12 months.
He certainly has a well-rehearsed team at his disposal. Whether he can keep the level each time is another matter. Since the movie Match Point 12 years ago, Woody Allen turned more and more away from his real genre, the comedy. What is now more interested in his late works are the chasms of the people, their mistakes and weaknesses.
So also in this film: The couple Ginny (Kate Winslet) and Humpty (Jim Belushi) lives for years only side by side. They both work in an amusement park on Coney Island beach near New York. Julian Schnabel is considered one of the most important artists of our time. Born in Brooklyn / New York in 1951, he grew up in Texas and returned to his hometown as a young man.
