Verfilmungen der Lebensgeschichten von Künstlern ist bei Regisseuren immer sehr beliebt, kennt das große Publikum doch zumeist die Namen bereits von ihren Kunstwerken. Das Leben von Vincent van Gogh ist wohl bereits ein Dutzend Mal verfilmt worden. Besonders aber französische Künstler, wie Rodin und Monet, sind dabei bevorzugte Themen und auch Gauguin durfte jetzt schon zum dritten Mal Ziel eines abendfüllenden Oeuvres werden.
Dabei setzte Regisseur und Drehbuchautor Edouard Deluc (*1970) ganz auf seinen Hauptdarsteller Vincent Cassel, der wohl zurzeit bekannteste französische Schauspieler. Und natürlich auf die Exotik der Inselwelt von Tahiti. Wegen letzterem ist der wahre Paul Gauguin vor mehr als 100 Jahren ebenfalls dorthin gefahren, konnte er zu Hause doch nicht mehr die Motive finden, die ihn reizten. Und Tahiti war ab 1880 französische Kolonie geworden. Doch was der Film etwas auszublenden versucht ist die Tatsache, dass es Gauguin (*1848) dort doch meistens ziemlich dreckig ging. Zweimal reiste er dorthin, 1891 und 1895. Sein Leben weit weg der Heimat war alles andere als fröhlich und unbeschwert. Denn er musste in bitterer Armut leben, teilweise sich mit Jobs als Hafenarbeiter über Wasser halten und immer wieder schwere Krankheiten erdulden. Einzig sein Liebesleben schien erfolgreich, konnte er doch mehrmals Freundinnen für sich als Model und Liebhaberinnen gewinnen, die gerade mal 13 oder 14 Jahre alt waren. Auch diese für uns heute fast pädophile Neigung wird im Film ausgeblendet. Das im Film gezeigte Mädchen (Tuhei Adams) ist wohl eher Mitte Zwanzig. So ist der Film das, was sich wohl auch Gauguin von seiner Reise 1891 erhofft hatte – ein unwirklicher Traum von einem möglichen Paradies. Gauguin starb im Alter von 55 Jahren auf der Insel Hiva Oa. Er ist dort auch begraben. Seine schönsten Arbeiten finden wir heute in den wichtigsten Museen der Welt.

„LADY MACBETH“ – Drama – USA – 2017

Wer sich hier eine Verfilmung des berühmte Shakespeare Drama erhofft hat liegt völlig falsch. Es ist die freie Übersetzung eines (Kriminal-) Romans des russischen Schriftstellers Nikolaj Leskow aus dem 19. Jahrhundert, indem er von einem Mordfall auf dem Lande erzählt. Dabei möchte der Titel eigentlich nur auf die Rigorosität hinweisen, mit der die Protagonistin im Film/ Roman ihr Ziel verfolt. Die Rede ist von der sehr jung verheirateten Catherine (Florence Pugh *1996), die im England von 1865 zwangsverheiratet wird. Doch der Ehemann hat keinerlei Interesse an ihr und ist ständig auf Reisen. Währenddessen wacht der Schwiegervater über sie und verbietet ihr sogar das Haus zu verlassen. Für eine lebenslustige und wissbegierige Frau wie Catherine eine Katastrophe. Als eines Tages auch der Schwiegervater verreist ist, schleicht sie sich raus und lernt dabei den Landarbeiter Sebastian kennen (Cosmo Jarvis). Sie beginnt mit ihm eine leidenschaftliche Affäre. Die Folgen kann man sich vorstellen. Doch anders als in „Tess“ von Roman Polanski oder in den vielen „Lady Chatterly“ Verfilmungen gibt sich die Frau ihrem Schicksal hin sondern nimmt selbst das Heft in die Hand und geht dabei im wahrsten Sinne über Leichen.

„Good Time“ von den Brüdern Ben und Joshua Safdie mit Robert Pattinson („Twilight“) in der Hauptrolle. Ein Film über ein ungleiches Bruderpaar, welches abseits der Gesellschaft in New York von der Hand in den Mund lebt. Und eines Tages eine Bank überfällt.
Wie bekannt wurde, ist der Filmemacher Tom Tykwer zum Jury-Präsidenten der nächsten BERLINALE 2018 gewählt worden.

Filming the life stories of artists is always very popular with directors, as the big audience usually knows the names of their works of art. The life of Vincent van Gogh has probably been filmed a dozen times. But especially French artists, such as Rodin and Monet are preferred subjects and also Gauguin was now for the third time the target of a full-length oeuvre.
Director and scriptwriter Edouard Deluc (* 1970) relies entirely on his leading actor Vincent Cassel, probably the most famous French actor of our time and the exotic of the island world of Tahiti. Because of the latter, the true Paul Gauguin also went there more than 100 years ago, but at home he could no longer find the motives that appealed to him. And Tahiti had become a French colony in 1880. But what the film tries to hide is the fact that Gauguin (* 1848) really found there the most important motives of his artistic work. He traveled there twice, in 1891 and 1895. His life there was anything but happy and carefree. Because he had to live in abject poverty, sometimes keeping up with jobs as a docker and constantly suffering from serious illnesses. Only his love life seemed successful, because he could win several girlfriends for themselves as a model and lover, who were just 13 or 14 years old. Also this almost pedophile inclination for us today is hidden in the film. The girl shown in the film (Tuhei Adams) is probably in her mid-twenties. So the film is what Gauguin had hoped for his trip in 1891 – an unreal dream of a possible paradise. Gauguin died at the age of 55 on the island of Hiva Oa. He is buried there too. His most beautiful works can be found today in the most important museums in the world.

Anyone who has hoped for a film adaptation of the famous Shakespeare drama is completely wrong. It is the free translation of a (criminal) novel by the Russian writer Nikolaj Leskov from the 19th century, in which he tells of a murder case in the country. The title really only wants to point out the rigor with which the protagonist in the film / novel pursues her goal. We are talking about the very young married Catherine (Florence Pugh * 1996), who is forcibly married in England in 1865. But the husband has no interest in her and is constantly traveling. Meanwhile, the father-in-law watches over her and even forbids her to leave the house. For a fun-loving and inquisitive woman like Catherine a catastrophe. One day when her father-in-law is away, she sneaks out and meets the farm worker Sebastian (Cosmo Jarvis). She starts a passionate affair with him. The consequences can be imagined. But unlike in „Tess“ by Roman Polanski or in the many „Lady Chatterly“ film adaptations, the woman gives herself to her fate but takes the book in her own hands and in the truest sense goes over corpses.
