„MARY POPPIN’S RÜCKKEHR“ (Mary Poppins Returns) – Fantasy – USA – 2018
Regie: Rob Marshall
Cast: Emily Blunt, Colin Firth, Meryl Streep, Angela Lansbury, Ben Wishaw, Emily Mortimer, Julie Waters, Lin-Manuel Miranda
Filmverleih: Walt Disney

Natürlich wieder in London.

„MARY POPPINS RETURNS“  – Fantasy – USA – 2018
Director: Rob Marshall
Cast: Emily Blunt, Colin Firth, Meryl Streep, Angela Lansbury, Ben Wishaw, Emily Mortimer, Julie Waters, Lin-Manuel Miranda
Film Distribution: Walt Disney
One of the most enchanting children’s films is certainly the film adaptation of the „Mary Poppins“ books (published 1934) of the Australian writer Pamela Travers. Here she describes an idiosyncratic kindergarten teacher, today called rather Nanny, who experiences many extraordinary adventures with two children of a London family. In 1964, the books were filmed by Robert Stevenson. With overwhelming success. The story became a musical and the two brothers Richard and Robert Sherman contributed the music. Result: 5 Oscars. Among other things, the awards for the main character, Julie Andrews and of course for the music („Chim-Chim-Cheree“ and „A Spoon full of Shugar“ or „Super Calfragelisticexpialigetish“.
54 years later comes the remake of Bob Marshall. The choice of the director was certainly correct, as he himself has a Boradway career as a dancer and choreographer and had also made several successful films such as the musical „Chicago“ (2002), „The Geisha“ (2005), „Nine „(2009) and“ In to the Woods „(2014), also with Emily Blunt, which is based on the story of the fairytale“ Rotkäppchen „. Bob Marshall was so far the tight man for the film adaptation of another fairy tale.
While the first film from 1964 still plays before the First World War, the sequel begins in 1930. Of course in London. At the time of the world economic crisis. The former children Michael (Ben Wishaw) and Jane Banks (Emily Mortimer) have grown up. Michael works like his father in a bank and has three children, Annabel, Georgie and John. But he has financial problems. When Michael’s wife dies, Mary Poppins comes back and helps thanks to her supernatural abilities  the family from the crisis and bring the laughter back into the house.

The best of the movie is Emily Blunt as Mary Poppins. The American actress has a good chance to win the Oscar after 54 years, as her colleague Julie Andrews,  for the same role. Great again the music and the dance performances and especially the sequences, when real film and cartoon are mixed up in the wonder world. Of course, this is much better realized today than it was in the 1950s. The story, however, lags slightly. On the script they should have worked something more. What is quite typical for today’s movies which put on the bag of tricks and forget the story.
No matter, the good mood, the cheerful dance scenes and a grandiose Emily Blunt make a wonderful movie.
Conclusion: If you want to go to the cinema with your whole family over Christmas, this is the place for you. And not only the kids will have fun.
Also starting:
„WESTWOOD“ by Lorna Tucker about the charismatic fashion designer Vivienne Westwood. An exciting documentary and a „must“ for every fashion fan.
„RGB – A LIFE FOR JUSTICE“ by Betsy West about strong US judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who has spent her life advocating for women’s rights and is now playing a significant role as a judge at the United States Supreme Court.
