Disaster of Paris – Notre Dame in flames
By Holger Jacobs
04/16/2019
After a devastating fire in the cathedral Notre Dame de Paris, the entire roof truss and a 93-meter high pinnacle collapsed.
At 6.50 pm, the fire alarm went off at the Sapeur Pompier in Paris: the country’s largest cathedral and national shrine in France is on fire.
Immediately, all the social media showed pictures and videos of the flames blazing on the roof of the cathedral. More and more people gathered on the banks of the Seine to attend the gruesome spectacle.
The Notre Dame de Paris is much more than a simple church. It is a symbol of the culture of France. For me, who spent 20 years in Paris, yesterday evening was a shock.
The cathedral Notre Dame de Paris was built in the 12th century. Overall, the construction took over 200 years. Their specialty is the mixture of two styles. Started as a Romanesque church in 1163, it was completed in 1345 as a Gothic cathedral. It is therefore the oldest building in the Gothic style of France and marked the beginning of a new architectural era.
With its two towers 69 meters high and its total length of 130 meters and 48 meters wide, it is a powerful structure in the city center on one of the two islands of the Seine, one of the oldest parts of Paris. It forms the geographic center of the French metropolis. With 13 million visitors a year, it is probably the most visited monument in Europe.
Notre Dame de Paris had suffered greatly during the French Revolution. The Revolutionary Guards had destroyed many churches and monasteries across the country and confiscated their goods. Fortunately, the structure of the Notre Dame de Paris was spared, but many valuable relics and works of art were looted. Thus, the cathedral had a sad existence at the beginning of the 19th century until finally France’s most famous writer Victor Hugo published the novel „The Hunchback of Notre Dame“ in 1931 and initiated a wave of solidarity with the famous building. In 1844, a major refurbishment began, including the construction of the pointed tower, which became a victim of the flames last night.
A new renovation from 2019 should just start and last until 2022. Only a few days ago, construction workers had installed an iron scaffold above the ridge. But that’s where the fire started last night. Welding in the roof truss is often the cause of fires during renovations. What triggered the disaster last night is still under investigation.
At about 9 pm it was not clear whether the entire church might collapse. First flames had previously been seen in the towers. But around 11:00 pm the fire department confirmed that the two main towers could be rescued.
This morning, there was a first meeting of the main nave of the cathedral and it seems that the structure of the building has been preserved. Especially the load-bearing outer walls.
President Emmanuel Macron had hurried to the burning Notre Dame that evening to inquire about the ongoing firefighting operations. This morning he announced that he wanted to rebuild the church in its original form. The French big industrialist Francois Pinault (Gucci, Prada) has already pledged a donation of 100 million euros.
