La Traviata in the Komische Oper Berlin

Perhaps the most famous opera in the world in a less convincing production
There is probably no other opera composition that brings together so many songs and arias in a single work. Wikipedia lists only 12 numbers, which are divided into more than 50 individual song compositions. Not even an ABBA musical can offer so many songs. And several of them are absolutely hits – especially the aria „Libiamo ne ‚lieti calici“, which everyone has heard somewhere before. First sung by Alfredo, then by Violetta and finally by the whole chorus – just terrific!

Can the staging of director Nicola Raab (* 1972) hold this high level?
The director from Regensburg has since 2007 completed over 20 productions at many opera houses in Europe and North America. Her best work is certainly Jules Massenet’s „Thais“ at the Gothenburg Opera House in 2010. She was then able to repeat it once again in Helsinki, Seville, Valencia and in Los Angeles.
Nicola Raab is in her work between classical and modern. And so she also staged „La Traviata“.
There is nothing revolutionary, only occasionally contemporary technique, which should remind the viewer that the fate of a Violetta could be repeated in the 21st century (prostitute loves a high-ranking personality). So we find an imac computer that Violetta uses to film herself with an integrated video camera (for an erotic video chat?). Or she and her frivolous fellow campaigners film themselves under the skirts with a GroPro action camera. As it sounds, it works: ridiculous!
In the opposite the stage design (Madeleine Boyd) and the costumes (Annemarie Woods) come from the 19th century. By the way, the costumes are exceptionally beautiful. A big bravo therefore to the costume designer Annemarie Woods.
But hoop skirts and Apple computers next to each other on stage? Breaks in directing are supposed to provide tension, but here they only produce a tired smile.

Please see our trailer of „La Traviata“ on kultur24 TV:

Of course, a video projection in today’s time may not be missing.
Here, Violetta herself sets it up with a beamer. On a big screen (which unfortunately did not quite want to open at the premiere), the viewer sees the famous movie „Camille“ by George Cukor with Greta Garbo and Robert Taylor from the year 1936. As we know, Guiseppe Verdi took the drama „La dame aux camélias“ („Camille“) by Alexandre Dumas as a template for his „La Traviata“.
Let’s write about the singers.
Natalya Pavlova gives a good Violetta with partial beautiful voice and skilful coloratura.
But somehow her play and voice didn’t touch me. She looks pretty, moves across the stage gallantly, and with her clothes from the last century, she reminds a little of Scarlett O’hara from the movie „Gone with the Wind“.
But I noticed that Natalya Pavlova were under strong tension, which is certainly due to the circumstance that her compatriot Anna Netrebko founded this world-fame 14 years ago with exactly this role of Violetta in „La Traviata“. This production of 2005 in Salzburg with Rolando Villazon as her partner was one of the highlights of the opera world in the last 30 years.
Before, there were only Maria Callas in the 50s and 60s.
Nevertheless, Natalya Pavlova has earned recognition for her performance. If she can shake off her nervousness in the next performances, then this role will certainly be a success for her.
Quite different her stage partner Ivan Magri as Alfredo.
Both vocally and playfully, he can’t convince in any way. Even he looks nice and seems to be a pretty boy with his blond hair – but he can not keep up with Natalya Pavlova and especially with Günter Papendell as his stage father Giorgo Germont. Komische Oper director Barrie Kosky should have had a closer look at the singer market.
Speaking of Günter Papendell as father Germont:
The duet with him and Violetta in the second act is the highlight of the whole evening. Here, Natalya Pavlova shows her feelings and passion in the right way.
I am very much looking forward to the interpretation of Violetta’s second cast, Vera-Lotte Boecker, whom I know and love very much from „La Bohème“ at the same house. She will sing Violetta on the 7th, 17th and 23rd of December 2019.
Conclusion: Thanks to the wonderful music by Verdi a moving opera experience with limitations due to a weak staging and a mediocre Alfredo.
