Die Preise überreichten u.a.

Igor Levit – Klavier
Sol Ganetta – Cello

Opus Classic Price 2019
By Holger Jacobs
14/10/2019
Yesterday, the OPUS KLASSIK Awards were presented at the Konzerthaus Berlin.
The OPUS KLASSIK is the new prize for classical music in Germany.
Organizer of the prize is the Association for the Promotion of Classical Music e. V., in which record labels, organizers, publishers and persons of the classical world are represented.
The award was presented by star moderator Thomas Gottschalk.
In the sold-out Konzerthaus Berlin about 1,000 guests experienced the glamorous award ceremony of the second OPUS KLASSIK. On Sunday, October 13, the Association for the Promotion of Classical Music e.V. awarded the coveted trophy to 45 artists for their outstanding achievements in the field of classical music, over 400 were nominated.
In the gala hosted by Thomas Gottschalk, numerous winners inspired with their performances, including Sol Gabetta, Nadine Sierra, Andreas Ottensamer and Klaus Florian Vogt.
Celebrity guests from Donna Leon to Markus Lanz and Judith Williams to model Zohre Esmaeli were infected by the special atmosphere.
Thrilling acceptance speeches, amusing presentations and a great commitment to promoting young talent were the hallmarks of this year’s OPUS KLASSIK. The ZDF showed the award ceremony delayed on the same evening.
The recording is now available on demand in the ZDF media library: OPUS KLASSIK 2019

Clemens Trautmann, CEO of the Association for the Promotion of Classical Music, looks with satisfaction at the second edition of the OPUS KLASSIK: „It was a moving evening – which was first and foremost the great, emotional performances of our prizewinners and the entertaining, empathic appreciations thanks to the laudators. But also all those who have volunteered in the jury and in the supporting association and as a partner of the OPUS KLASSIK with much commitment to success.
Many thanks to all involved for this great community effort! Together we were able to convey to a broad audience how classical music inspires through its diversity, humanity, passion and brilliance. “

Thrilling performances in the Konzerthaus
Among the highlights of the gala were the appearance of harpist Anneleen Lenaerts, who interpreted the film music classic of the Italian composer Nino Rota to „The Godfather“ and the humorous harmonica insert by Thomas Gottschalk, „today-show“ reporter Lutz van der Horst and Konstantin Reinfeld. Entrepreneur Judith Stecher-Williams paid homage to soprano Nadine Sierra as a „young talent / vocalist“, who was happy to receive her first music award ever in this impressive setting. Performing artists included baritone Christian Gerhaher, cellist Sol Gabetta, pianist Igor Levit and clarinetist Andreas Ottensamer. The prizes were handed over by Max Raabe, journalist Theo Koll and actress Ulrike Kriener.

The biggest applause this year, however, was not for a musical performance, but for Igor Levit, who in his acceptance speech remembered the victims of the attack in Halle (a jewish synagogue was attacked, two murdered). „I dedicate my prize to those who have been quietly or vociferously struggling for years against right-wing extremism, anti-Semitism, Islamophobia and anti-feminism. We all have responsibility! “

The most important prizes went to:
Joyce DiDonato – singer of the year
Christian Gerhaher – singer of the year
Igor Levit – piano
Sol Ganetta – Cello
Paavo Järvi – Conductor of the Year
Franz Welser-Möst with the Vienna Philharmonic – music of the 20th century for the recording of the „Philadelphia Symphony“ by Gottfried von Einem
Jonas Kaufmann – Bestseller for his live recording of the Italian Night on July 13, 2018 in the Waldbühne Berlin.

All winners:

An award went to Lang Lang for his video clip with „Bagatelle No. 25“ and „Für Elise“ by Ludwig van Beethoven. This price reminds a bit too much of the MTV Music Awards. But of course it’s good for the show. And the name Lang Lang anyway.
Whether there is room for another prize next to the ECHO, the former official prize of the music industry in Germany, remains to be seen.
Ultimately, though, one has to say that everything is good, which helps the classical music industry. The sales have dropped further in recent years.
Only a few superstars, such as Jonas Kaufmann or Lang Lang, can properly skim.
Many young and less well-known musicians can hardly keep their finances afloat.
If a prize like the OPUS KLASSIK should help to improve this situation, then I would be very happy.
Thus, I am already looking forward to the next award ceremony in 2020.
