Pablo Picasso in Paris

A large-scale exhibition on the blue and pink period of the century genius Pablo Picasso at the Musée d ‚Orsay in Paris.
Since the Musée d’Orsay was opened in 1986, it is finding more and more lovers. Especially its construction is of outstanding beauty. Originally designed as a train station and opened in 1900 to the Paris World Expo, the platforms were quickly too short because of the ever-increasing trains. Similar to the Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin. The official railway operation in Gare d ‚Orsay was therefore closed down in 1939. Only the elegant hotel and the restaurant remained open. But these also finally closed in 1973. It came a long discussion on a new use, until 1977, the French President Valerie Giscard d’Estaing decided to turn the former station into a museum. It should contain art from 1848 (beginning of the second French Republic) until 1914 at the beginning of the First World War. The works of the Impressionists, which are so popular, thus moved into the house, from Claude Monet, Paul Gauguin, Édouard Monet to George Serrat, Edgar Degas and Vincent van Gogh.
„Picasso, Bleu et rose“
This exhibition is organized by the public institution of the museums Orsay and Orangerie and the National Museum Picasso-Paris in collaboration with the Fondation Beyeler, Basel.
The exhibition, the first major partnership between the Musée d’Orsay and the Musée National Picasso-Paris, is an unprecedented exploration of Pablo Picasso’s „blue and pink periods“, a pivotal moment in his creation. Some icons of the artist are shown on this occasion in France for the first time. The presentation of this event at the Musée d’Orsay is part of the desire to register the young Picasso in his day and to reconsider his work from the point of view of belonging to the 19th century. In 1900, at the age of eighteen, Pablo Ruiz, who soon signed Picasso, was a prodigy. His production is divided between academic paintings to justify himself to his father, professor of drawing who dreams of an official career for his son, and more personal works, in contact with the Barcelona avant-garde magazines or posters.

With Picasso’s arrival in Paris in October 1900 at the Gare d ‚Orsay (see above), he began a period of intense and fruitful creation, which meant the birth of his artistic identity. First of all, his salon painting, which took him to the French capital: to depict his country in the Spanish section of the paintings of the World’s Fair, he presented a large work, „Derniers moments“.
Then begins an intense and prolific creative period interrupted by the artist’s travels between Spain and the French capital. The years 1900-1906 are characterized by a great variety of styles and by the emergence of plastic and conceptual questions that structure his creations. Picasso’s work is gradually moving from a rich palette of colors to pre-colored accents, as well as Van Gogh’s Post-Impressionism and Toulouse-Lautrec, the quasi-monochromes of the „blue period“, with the pink tones of the saltimbanque period „and the ocher variations of Gósol.
Instead of adhere strictly to the times of the blue (circa 1901-1904) and the pink (circa 1905-1906) periods, this exhibition chooses a chronological field that transcends the boundaries of the two periods.
More than 300 works are divided into 16 sections and distributed over 1,500 m2. Of these are 80 paintings, about 150 drawings and fifteen sculptures and about twenty prints. Archives, photographs and correspondences enrich the understanding and illustrate this moment of Picasso’s artistic itinerary.
„PICASSO, BLEU ET ROSE“ Musée d ‚Orsay, Paris, from 18.9.2018 – 06.01.2019. Opening times Tue – Sun 9.30am – 6pm, Thur – 9.45pm. On the weekend of 13th and 14th of October from 2pm – 10pm, with a special Program in conjunction with the Théatre du Chatelet.
