Leiter: Michael Baryshnikov).

Welch unerwarteter Auftritt.

Polina Semionova & Friends at the State Opera
By Holger Jacobs
05/18/2018
Ballerina Polina Semionova (* 1984) invited to a special evening ballet evening at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden.
There is hardly any other ballet dancer in the world right now who has received so many awards throughout her career. Perhaps the highest she got right at the beginning of her career: the gold medal at the Ballet Competition in Moscow in 2001, only comparable of winning the Chopin Competition for Pianists in Warsaw. It could not be better.
A year later, Polina had just finished her education in the ballet school of the Bolchoi Theater in Moscow, director and first soloist of the State Ballet Berlin, Vladimir Malachov, took her to the German capital and made her the first soloist of his company. From then on, Polina’s career began. For the last 16 years she has danced all the great classical ballets („Giselle“, „Sleeping Beauty“, „Swan Lake“, „La Bayadère“ et.c.) on almost every major stage in the world.
Since 2012, Polina Semionova is also the first soloist of the American Ballet Theater in New York (former leader: Michael Baryshnikov).
Polina Semionova has met many people in her 34-year life, of course, above all, from her artistic environment. When she was honored last year by the Berlin Senate as a „Berliner Kammertänzerin“ (sounds a bit funny, but is a great award), the idea came in her honor to organize a gala evening, in which Polina Semionova invites the dancers with whom she has worked a lot lately and to whom she feels close. And all are, as you can imagine, at the highest artistic level.
Of course, her dance partner from „Romeo and Juliet„, Ivan Zaytsev, is one of them. Kultur24 reported on the premiere at the Berlin State Opera on April 29, 2018. He belongs to the Mikhailovsky Ballet in St. Petersburg, where he has often appeared as a partner of Polina. Both danced the duet „Without Words“ after a choreography by Nacho Duato, music by Franz Schubert, and the duet „Cantata“ after a choreography by Mauro Bigonzetti.

To get closer to all participants of the evening would go beyond the scope here. I would like to highlight a few:
Daniel Camargo as a dance partner of Polina Semionova in „Le Corsaire“ after a choreography by Marius Petipa (1863). Technically brilliant and visually an eye-catcher!
Konstantin Lorenz (member of the Staatsballett Berlin and even born Berliner * 1987) with his partner Danielle Muir (* 1994) in the Pas de Deux of „Giselle“ (choreography: Jules Perrot from 1841). Both seemed to me also in real life a couple, as I could observe at the rehearsal. Technically almost perfect, they have radiated a great harmony and dancing pleasure. Danielle Muir is from New South Wales, Australia and trained in London.
I also liked Polina’s brother, Dmitri Semionova, who together with his dance partner Ksenia Ovsyanick (first solo dancer of the Staatsballett Berlin, 1992) danced an exhilarating modern duet, „Intimate Distance“, after the music of Otto Bubenicek (* 1974) and the choreography of his twin brother Jiri Bubenicek. For me the best piece of the evening.
The performance of dancer Friedemann Vogel with his solo „Moply“ based on the music of Bach and the choreography of Marco Goecke was also exciting. A very idiosyncratic and modern interpretation. We will also be seeing choreographer Marco Goecke at the next premiere of the Staatsballett on May 24 at the Komische Oper, with his choreography „Pierrot lunaire“ and the music by Arnold Schönberg.
Great applause for the appearance of the State Ballet School Berlin with ten of their young dancers of the State Youth Ballet Berlin. It was Polina’s Semionova’s personal wish that these young and talented dancers be present on her evening. Polina has been teaching at this school since 2013. The dance was „All Long Dem Day“, a choreography by Marco Goecke with the music by Nina Simone.
Suddenly singer Herbert Grönemeyer was on stage.
Polina Semionova had worked with him in 2003 in his video for the song „Demo“ and became known to a wider audience. That evening, at the end of the gala, she danced a sequence from his video as a thank you to the great singer. Herbert Grönemeyer was visibly touched.
With bravo calls and never-ending applause, the evening came to an end. It struck me that the enthusiasm was especially great with the more modern pieces. What gives me a good feeling for the future, when next year the dancer and choreographer Sasha Waltz will take over the direction of the Staatsballett Berlin. The time is ripe for a change of direction into the modern age. At the company as well as at the audience.
Let’s look forward to the future and to such beautiful ballet evenings like these!
