Die 70. Internationalen Filmfestspiele von Berlin mit einem Neustart

Seit 1.

„Heller Wahn“, Angela Winkler, Hannah Schygulla @ StudioCanal

„Brokeback Mountain“, Heath Ledger, Jake Gyllenhaal © Pathé Distribution

„Nackte Tiere“ © Czar Film

Police“ von Anne Fontain mit Omar Sy („Ziemlich beste Freunde“) und Virginie Efira

„Police“ © F comme Film

Andere Sektionen sind geblieben:

– PANORAMA (z.B. mit „Always Amber“ von Lia Hietala),

„Always Amber © Berlinale

– FORUM,
– GENERATIONEN“ (z.B. mit „Alice Junior“ Gil Baroni),

„Alice Junior“ © Beija Flor Filmes

– PERSPEKTIVE DEUTSCHES Kino (z.B. mit „Ein Fisch, der auf dem Rücken schwimmt“ von Eliza Petkova)“,

„Ein Fisch, der auf dem Rücken schwimmt © Constanze Schmitt

– RETROSPEKTIVE/ BERLINALE CLASSICS“,
– BERLINALE SHORTS“ und
– BERLINALE SERIES“ (z.B. mit „Sex“ von Clara Mendes

„Sex“ © Profile Film

„My Salinger Year“, Sigourney Weaver © Micro Scope

Minamata“ von Andrew Levitas mit Johnny Depp (am 21.02.2020 um 21.00 Uhr im Friedrichstadt-Palast)

„Minamata“, Johnny Depp © Larry Horricks/ Metal Work Pictures

„Hillary“, Hillary Clinton @ Berlinale

Der WETTBEWERB:

Nur noch 18 statt 24 Filme im Wettbewerb.
Mit fünf Filmen stellt das Land Frankreich einen Schwerpunkt. Aus Deutschland kommen zwei Produktionen, aus Italien ebenfalls zwei.

Im Wettbewerb würde mich interessieren:

Berlin Alexanderplatz“ von Burhan Qurbani

„Berlin Alexanderplatz © Wolfgang Ennebach

DAU. Natasha“ von Ilya Khrzhanovskiy

„DAU“ © Phenomen Film

Domangchin yeoja (The Womam who ran)“von Hong Sandsoo

The 70th Berlin International Film Festival with a fresh start
Since June 1, 2019, there has been a new top team leading the Berlinale: The Italian Carlo Chatrian, formerly director of the film festival in Locarno, and the Dutchwoman Mariette Rissenbeek, who was in the Finding Commission together with Secretary of State for Culture Monika Grütters for the search for a new director and she found herself, so to speak … Rissenbeek was previously an employee at German Films (supports the export of German film productions) and is now taking over the management of the Berlinale, Carlo Chatrian taks over the artistic direction.
Is there a paradigm shift at the Berlinale?
No! Almost everything stays the same.
The changes are minimal. The most important thing: Berlin remains a public festival! In other words, unlike the other major film festivals, such as Cannes or Venice, the audience can also see all films in the competition and in the other sections. Only at the Spree there is so much democracy.
Here are the most important changes:
The total number of films shown with competition and all sections is now 340 compared to 400 in the last year. That corresponds to 15% less. The desire of many for a significant streamlining of the festival has therefore only been met to a limited extent.
The sections „Culinary Cinema“ and the „Native“ program no longer exist.

For this purpose, the section „ON TRANSMISSION“ was developed as a special program for the 70th Berlinale:
7 directors, all of whom have already shown their films at the Berlinale and sometimes even won the Golden Bear, were invited to name 7 directors whose films were shown on the Berlinale.
After each screening of their films there is a public discussion with the two directors.
On Tuesday, February 23, 2020, I recommend the films by and the conversation with Margarethe von Trotta („Heller Wahn“) and Ina Weisse („The Architect“).
And on February 27th, 2020, the films and the conversation by Ang Lee (showing his film “ Brokeback Mountain „) and Wandafuru Raifu (shows his film“ Japan 1998 „).
All events and film screenings of the „On Transmission“ series take place in the Akademie der Künste, Hanseatenweg 10, in Berlin-Tiergarten.

The ENCOUNTERS section is also new.
The most important change from last season is definitely the new section „ENCOUNTERS“.
It is intended to celebrate world premieres of films that „show aesthetically and structurally daring work by independent and innovative filmmakers,“ said the press release. This term could of course also be applied to all other 340 films of the festival. It remains to be seen how these films will really be.
In the section „Encounters“ 15 films are shown, a three-member jury will award a winner at the end.

In the section „ENCOUNTERS“ I would be interested in:
„Naked animals“ by Melanie Wammlung
„Police“ by Anne Fontain with Omar Sy („Best Friends“) and Virginie Efira
Other sections have remained:
– PANORAMA (eg with „Always Amber“ by Lia Hietala), – FORUM, – GENERATIONS „(eg with“ Alice Junior „Gil Baroni), – PERSPECTIVE GERMAN cinema (eg with“ A fish that swims on your back „by Eliza Petkova) „, – RETROSPEKTIVE / BERLINALE CLASSICS“, – BERLINALE SHORTS „and – BERLINALE SERIES“ (eg with „Sex“ by Clara Mendes and „Stateless“ by Cate Blanchett!) Incidentally, the Berlin Film Festival is the only festival, which is also concrete Films that are actually only shown on television are included in the program. On the subject of Netflix and other streaming services: Films that were produced by these providers must have a time if they want to be included in the festival program for a long time in a cinema, which is now also used at other festivals and even at the Academy Awards (Oscar for Laura Dern in the Netflix production „Marriage Story“).

BERLINALE SPECIAL GALAS
Who would like to see famous movie stars will get them in this category.
Since there will be no „Out of Competition“ films in the competition anymore (many of which were major Hollywood productions), these films have been relegated to the „Berlinale Specials“ category.
In the section „BERLINALE SPECIAL“ I would be interested:
„My Salinger Years“ by Phillipe Falardeau with Sigourney Weaver (at the Berlinale Palast
„Minimata“ by Andrew Levitas with Johnny Depp (in the Friedrichstadt-Palast)
„Hillary“ by Nanette Burstein with and about the former Secretary of State and Presidential Candidate Hillary Clinton (in the Haus der Berliner Festspiele
The COMPETITION
Only 18 instead of 24 films in the competition. With five films in competition, the country France is a focal point. Two productions come from Germany and two from Italy.
I would be interested in:
„Berlin Alexanderplatz“ by Burhan Qurbani
„DAU. Natasha“ by Ilya Khrzhanovskiy
„Domangchin yeoja (The Womam who ran)“ by Hong Sandsoo
„The roads not taken“ by Sally Potter with Jarvier Bardem and Elle Faning
„Little Sister“ by Stéphane Chuat with Nina Hoss and Lars Eidinger
„Never Rarely Sometimes Always“ by Eliza Hittman
„Siberia“ by Abel Ferrara with Willem Dafoe
„Undine“ by Christian Petzold with Paula Beer and Franz Rogowski
„Le Sel des Larmes“ by Phillipe Garrel with Logann Antuofermo

The competition jury is headed by Jeremy Irons („Kafka“, „Lolita“, „Die Hard-Die Hard“).
The other jury members are Actress Bérénice Bejo („The Artist“), German film producer Bettina Brokemper („Wild“ with Lilith Stangenberg), Palestinian director Annemarie Jacir („The Salt of the Sea“), American screenwriter Kenneth Lonergan („Gangs of New York“ ), the Italian actor Luca Marinelli („Don’t do anything bad“) and the Brazilian director Kleber Mendonca Filho („Aquarius“)
You see, on the whole, the 70th Berlinale is a continuation of its former director Dieter Kosslick.
Most of the venues have remained the same:
the Berlinale Palast and the Cinemaxx cinemas on Potsdamer Platz, the Friedrichstadt-Palast (Friedrichstrasse 107) and the Kino International (Karl-Marx-Allee 33). Newly added are the Cubix on Alexanderplatz, the Hebbel am Ufer theater (Hallesches Ufer 32), the Haus der Berliner Festspiele (Schaperstr. 24) and the Akademie der Künste (Hanseatenweg 10).
Ticket sales have not changed either:
Always up to max. three days in advance Tickets can be bought.
Either online on the Berlinale homepage or in the various advance booking offices: Potsdamer Platz Arkaden, Kino International and in the Audi City Boutique (Kudamm 195). Between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m.
This time the British actress Helen Mirren („The Queen“) receives the honorary bear.

The Berlinale will be opened on Thursday evening with the film „My Salinger Year“ by Phillipe Falardeau and a gala in the Berlinale Palast at Potsdamer Platz at 7:00 pm.
The gala will be broadcast live on 3sat from 7:20 pm. There is also a livestream.

We hope you all enjoy a lot of great movies!
