Die neuen Filme im Kino: One Battle After Another

Knallharte Action-Komödie trifft auf die Immigrationspolitik von Donald Trump
Während Hollywood noch vor Schreck erstarrt, führt der neue US-Präsident Donald Trump das Land immer mehr in eine Autokratie.
Eine Unliebsame Presse wird manipuliert, wie jüngst durch die willkürliche Absetzung der beliebten Late Night Moderatoren STEPHEN COLBERT und JIMMY KIMMEL.
Kritische Journalisten werden nicht mehr zu Pressebriefings ins Weiße Haus eingeladen und nationale Museen werden gezwungen nur noch eine verschönte Sicht auf die amerikanische Geschichte zu zeigen.
In Städte werden Soldaten der Nationalgarde geschickt, in denen Bürgermeister der Demokratischen Partei angehören.
Und unliebsame Richter werden abgesetzt oder sogar selbst angeklagt, und, und, und.
Interessanterweise wurde dieser Film „One Battle After Another“ schon ein Jahr vor Donald Trumps Amtseintritt gedreht.
Aber der Regisseur PAUL THOMAS ANDERSON hatte wohl eine Vorahnung.

Handlung
In den 90er Jahren kämpft eine Gruppe Jugendlicher, die sich „French 75“ nennt, für mehr Gerechtigkeit in der Gesellschaft.
Dabei überfallen sie sowohl Banken, um von den sogenannten „Reichen“ das Geld zu stehlen, als auch Lager mit Immigranten, um sie zu befreien, bevor sie in andere Länder abgeschoben werden.
Wie es jetzt gerade in den USA unter Donald Trump durch die staatliche Behörde ICE, Immigration ans Customs Enforcement, geschieht.
Bis an die Zähne bewaffnete Männer durchkämmen systematisch Asylantenheime, Flüchtlingsunterkünfte oder sogar Unternehmen, wie kürzlich bei der koreanische Automarke Hyundai geschehen, als über 400 Arbeiter direkt vom Fließband in Flugzeuge nach Südkorea gesteckt wurden.
Nach Verhandlungen mit der Trump Administration konnten zum Glück alle wieder zurück in die USA.
So viel Glück haben die meisten nicht.

Zurück zum Film:
Bei einem dieser Überfälle zur Befreiung von gefangenen Immigranten lernen sich das „French 75“ Mitglied Perfidia Beverly Hills (TEYANA TAYLOR) und der für die Sicherheit des Lagers zuständige Colonel Lockjaw (SEAN PENN) kennen.
Kurz danach beginnen sie eine Affäre, während Perfifia eigentlich noch mit „French 75“ Mitglied Bob Ferguson (LEONARDO DICAPRIO), genannt „Ghetto Pat“, liiert ist.
Als Perfidia schwanger wird und die Tochter Charlene (CHASE INFINITI) zur Welt kommt, denkt Bob, das Kind ist von ihm.

Währenddessen erschießt Perfidia bei einem weiteren Überfall einen Wachmann und wird festgenommen.
Colonel Lockjaw macht ihr ein Angebot: Wenn sie die anderen Mitglieder der „French 75“ Gruppe verrät, kommt sie frei.
Letztlich nimmt sie das Angebot an, kommt in ein Zeugenschutzprogramm und verschwindet für immer von der Bildfläche.
Doch zum Glück werden einige Mitglieder noch rechtzeitig gewarnt und auch Bob kann gemeinsam mit seiner Tochter, die nun aus Sicherheitsgründen Willa (CHASE INFINITI) genannt wird, fliehen.
16 Jahre später will Colonel Lockjaw einer elitären, rechtsextremen Gruppe weißer Rassisten beitreten.
Dazu bedarf es aber einer absolut sauberen Weste, was bedeutet, dass er z.B. keine gemischt rassige Beziehung gehabt haben darf und erst recht keine gemischt rassigen Kinder gezeugt.
Da er weiß, dass Perfidia nach ihrer gemeinsamen Affäre schwanger wurde nimmt Lockjaw an, dass das Kind vom ihm stammt.
So beginnt er nach dieser vermutlichen Tochter zu suchen, um sie „aus der Welt zu schaffen“.
Er findet Vater Bob und Tochter Willa in einer weit abgelegen Stadt und schafft es die Tochter zu entführen.
Ein Gentest gibt ihm Gewissheit, dass er der Vater ist.
Somit übergibt er Willa einem Kopfgeldjäger, der es töten soll.
Währenddessen konnte Vater Bob seinen Häschern entkommen und jagt nun Lockjaw hinterher, um Willa zu retten.
Am Schluss kommt es zum Showdown.
Kritik
Der Film kommt gleich zu Anfang ziemlich brutal daher.
Auch ihre Protagonisten sind nicht wirklich sympathisch.
Weder die Mitglieder der Revoluzzer, noch erst recht das Militär und ihr Colonel.
TEYANA TAYLOR als Perfidia sieht ein bisschen wie die Sängerin RIHANNA aus, aber nicht so hübsch.
Ihre angeblich so große sexuelle Ausstrahlung, u.a. auf den Colonel, konnte ich nicht nachvollziehen.
JEAN PENN dagegen als Widerling spielt hervorragend.

Das könnte eine Oscar-Nominierung bringen.
Diese Mischung aus verdrängter Unsicherheit, überschätzter Führungspersönlichkeit und abgrundtiefer Seele, der sogar seine eigene Tochter ohne zu Zögern umbringen lassen will, spielt SEAN PENN sehr überzeugend.
LEONARDO DICAPRIO als Bob hat hier wieder einmal die Rolle des etwas beschränkten, vollgekifften und ständig betrunkenen Typen, der eigentlich keinen wirklichen Plan hat, außer seine Tochter zu beschützen.
Manche erinnert die Art und Weise seines Spiels und der Aufmachung mit einem Bademantel durch die Gegend zu wandern an den „Dude“ in „The Big Lebowski“.
Doch an die damalige Performance von JEFF BRIDGES kommt LEONARDO nicht heran.
So eine ähnliche, etwas beschränkte, Persönlichkeit, musste er schon bei QUENTIN TARANTINO in „Once upon in Hollywood“ spielen.
Dabei kann er leider keine großen Pluspunkte sammeln und bleibt hier schauspielerisch hinter seinem Können zurück.
Es ist zu hoffen, dass er in seinem nächsten Film wieder seine volle Stärke zeigen kann.
Eine Entdeckung aber ist die junge CHASE INFINITI als Willa.

Die 25-jährige US-amerikanische Schauspielerin hatte vor ihrem Engagement in „One Battle after Another“ nur eine Nebenrolle in einer US-Fernsehserie.
Doch Regisseur PAUL THOMAS ANDERSON suchte eine junge Frau, die Erfahrung in Martial Arts hat und CHASE konnte das nachweisen, weil sie schon seit Jahren Kampfsport betreibt.
Und so bekam eine völlig unbekannte Schauspielerin eine der wichtigsten Rollen an der Seite von SEAN PENN und LEONARDI DICAPRIO.
Wenn das nicht ein Hollywood Traum ist?
Fazit: Gut gemachter Actionfilm mit einigen komödiantischen Einlagen, welcher mich aber nicht voll überzeugen konnte.

Hard-hitting action comedy meets Donald Trump’s immigration policy
Filmmakers in Hollywood seem to be slowly waking up and realizing how the new US President Donald Trump is increasingly transforming the country into an autocracy.
Unwelcome press is being manipulated, as recently demonstrated by the arbitrary removal of popular late-night hosts Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Kimmel.
Critical journalists are no longer invited to press briefings at the White House, national museums are forced to present only a sugarcoated view of American history.
National Guard troops are being deployed to cities where mayors belong to the Democratic Party, unwelcome judges are being removed or even impeached themselves, and so on.
Interestingly, this film, „One Battle After Another,“ was shot a year before Donald Trump took office.
But director Paul Thomas Anderson apparently had a premonition.

Story
In the 1990s, a group of young people calling themselves the „French 75“ fights for social justice.
They rob banks to steal money from the so-called „rich,“ as well as detention centers filled with immigrants awaiting deportation to their home countries (as is currently happening in the US with the government agency ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement), which was established in 2003 after the terrorist attacks of September 11th and now places thousands of illegal immigrants without residency permits in detention centers and sends them to third countries, where they end up in prison).
During one of these raids to free imprisoned immigrants, „French 75“ member Perfidia Beverly Hills (TEYANA TAYLOR) and Colonel Lockjaw (SEAN PENN), the detention center’s security officer, meet.
Shortly thereafter, they begin an affair, while Perfidia is still in a relationship with „French 75“ member Bob Ferguson (LEONARDO DICAPRIO), nicknamed „Ghetto Pat.“
When Perfidia becomes pregnant and gives birth to their daughter Charlene, Bob believes the child is his.
Meanwhile, Perfidia shoots a security guard during another robbery and is arrested.
Colonel Lockjaw makes her an offer: if she betrays the other members of the „French 75“ group, she will be released.
Ultimately, she accepts the offer, is placed in a witness protection program, and disappears from the public eye forever.
Fortunately, some members are warned in time, and Bob, along with his daughter, now called Willa (CHASE INFINITI), is able to escape.

16 years later, Colonel Lockjaw wants to join an elite, right-wing extremist white supremacist group.
But this requires a completely clean slate, which means, for example, that he cannot have had an interracial relationship and certainly cannot have fathered any interracial children.
Knowing that Perfidia became pregnant after their affair, Lockjaw assumes the child could be his.
So he begins searching for his presumed daughter in order to „eradicate her.“
He finds father Bob and daughter Willa in a remote town and manages to kidnap the daughter.
A genetic test confirms that he is the father.
He then hands Willa over to a bounty hunter to be killed.
Meanwhile, father Bob has escaped his pursuers and is now chasing Lockjaw to rescue Willa.
The final showdown takes place.
Critics
The film comes across as quite brutal right from the start.
Its protagonists aren’t particularly likeable either.
Neither the members of the revolutionaries, nor even the military and their colonel.
TEYNA TAYLOR as Perfidia looks a bit like the singer RIHANNA, but not as pretty.
I couldn’t quite relate to her supposedly strong sexual attraction, including to the colonel.
JEAN PENN, on the other hand, delivers an excellent performance as the creep.

That could earn an Oscar nomination.
SEAN PENN plays this mixture of repressed insecurity, overrated leadership, and a deep, dark soul, who even wants to have his own daughter killed without hesitation, very convincingly.
LEONARDO DICAPRIO once again plays the role of the somewhat limited, stoned guy who doesn’t really have a plan other than protecting his daughter.
Some are reminded of the „Dude“ in „The Big Lebowski“ by his acting style and his bathrobe-wearing attire.
But Leonardo doesn’t come close to Jeff Bridges‘ performance of the time.
He already had to play a similar character in Quentin Tarantino’s „Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.“
Unfortunately, he doesn’t score any major points here and his acting skills fall short of his potential.
One can only hope that he can show his full potential again in his next movie.
But the young CHASE INFINITI as Willa is a revelation.

The 25-year-old American actress had only had a supporting role in a US television series before her work in „One Battle After Another.“
But director PAUL THOMAS ANDERSON was looking for a young woman with experience in martial arts, and CHASE could prove it because she had been practicing martial arts for years.
And so a completely unknown actress landed one of the most important roles alongside SEAN PENN and LEONARDI DICAPRIO.
Isn’t that a Hollywood dream?
Conclusion: A well-made action film with some comedic elements, but one that didn’t completely convince me.
