Was auffällt:

Eric Claptons bisher erfolgreichstes Album überhaupt (16 Millionen verkaufter CD’s).

Eric Clapton live in Berlin

The master of vocals and guitar played his biggest hits last night in the sold-out Mercedes-Benz Arena.
Eric Clapton (* 1945) is together with Jimi Hendricks (* 1942 – † 1970), Jimmy Page (* 1944) of the Led Zeppelin, Keith Richard (* 1943) of the Rolling Stones, Carlos Santana (* 1947) and John McLaughlin (* 1942) to the best guitarists of his generation.
Yesterday at 20.00 clock expected me in the Mercedes-Benz Arena, an almost sold out house. 12,000 Eric Clapton fans in different age groups waited anxiously for the performance of the master.
At 9:00 pm EricClapton and his band entered the stage, without much frills, no loud drum rolls, no lightshows or anything like that. Only the spotlights above the stage came on. The only thing that could be heard was the joyous screaming of the audience.
Eric Clapton began his concert with the song „PRETENDING“, a song he had recorded in 1990 with the orchestra and blues band at the Royal Albert Hall for his live album „24 Nights“.
Right after that came „KEY TO THE HIGHWAY“, written in 1940 by Charlie Segar and Eric Clapton along with Keith Richard at the CROSSROADS GUITAR FESTIVAL 2013 at Madison Square Garden in New York.
The third song is „I’m Your HOOCHIE COOCHIE MAN“, written by Willie Dixon in 1954 and reinterpreted in 1970 by Eric Clapton and recorded in 1994 for his second studio album „From the Cradle“. The text alludes to the pleasure of sex and alcohol.
The first highlight of the evening is of course: „I SHOT THE SHERIFF“, written and played by Bob Marley in 1973. Just a year later, Eric Clapton included this song in his repertoire. It was his biggest success so far and in the same year he was in first place on the US charts.

Great enthusiasm among all 12,000 listeners in the Mercedes-Benz Arena.
What stands out:
Most of the songs that Eric Clapton brought out in his musical life were cover versions. Other than the inclined music fan might suspect, this is not necessarily a lack of own imagination. Much more it resembles the jazz musicians who take over again themes, harmonies and sounds from other musicians to reinterpret them for themselves.
So does Clapton. His way of working too, never to work too long with the same musician band, is very reminiscent of the world of jazz.
After completing his art studies at London’s Kingston University, Eric Clapton played in four different bands within three years until he finally joined the still-popular group CREAM in 1966.
With them he had his first hit „Sunshine in my Love“. But only two years later he moved on, playing with the Beatles or solo with George Harrison or John Lennon and with other musicians.
Finally, in 1969, he founded the band DEREK AND THE DOMINOS with various musicians and together with them he created the famous (and self-written) song „LAYLA“, which is about an unfortunate love story. This song became one of the most successful rock ballads of the 70s.
At the end of the evening came the second important, also self-written song by Eric Clapton: „CROSSROADS“, which he recorded in 1968 with the group CREAM and released on their double album „WHEELS OF FIRE“ in the same year.
The song „CROSSROADS“ Eric Clapton already played all his long (musician) life on all stages and concert events in the world.
This song probably has a special meaning for Clapton: In the 70’s Eric Clapton had drug problems and only a therapy and treatment in a rehabilitation center on the Caribbean island Antigua could cure him.
As a thank you, every three years, Eric Clapton organizes the so-called CORSSROADS GUITAR FESTIVAL, where all proceeds go to the rehabilitation center. Meanwhile, the clinic also has the name „Crossroads“.
I would also like to mention another song, „TEARS IN HEAVEN“, which Eric Clapton of course played last night.
On March 20, 1991, his then four-year-old son accidentally fell out of a window of a New York skyscraper. With this song Clapton tried to process his grief over the loss.
„TEARS IN HEAVEN“ became the theme song of the movie „Rush“ in 1992 and got a Golden Globe for it.
The song „TEARS IN HEAVEN“ is also on the 1993 released album „MTV UNPLUGGED“, which was rewarded with 6 Grammys.
Eric Clapton’s most successful album ever (16 million CDs sold).
The evening in the Mercedes-Benz Arena ends with great cheers after 1.45 hours with the song „BEFORE YOU ACCUSE ME“, written in 1958 by Bo Diddley and reinterpreted in 1989 by Eric Clapton.
The next concerts of Eric Clapton in Germany will take place in the SAP Arena on June 8th in Mannheim and in the exhibition hall on June 10th in Dresden.
Then it will continue in September 2019 in the US, with stops in San Francisco (11.09.2019), Las Vegas (13.09.2019), Phoenix (14.09.2019) and Dallas (20th and 21st September 2019). Going is worth it!
