Quadratisch, praktisch, gut? Bei Chanel trifft Haute Couture auf Funktionalität

Was trägt Frau in diesem Frühjahr?

Chanel S / S 2018
Square, practical, good? Haute couture meets functionality at Chanel
From Katja Andreae
What is woman wearing this spring? It should be prepared for mixed weather, after all, last summer literally fell into the water. However, haute couture fashion does not necessarily attribute functionality to the flag. While high street labels such as Vetements, Supreme, and OffWhite write hymns of praise for sporty, casual, and unpretentious looks, haute couture houses are still struggling with the practicality of their collections.
Haute couture for everyone.
But now Chanel has shown that it can be done differently. In the current spring / summer collection you can find rain capes, (rubber) boots and transparent bucket hats. A tribute to functionality? Probably not. But at least an approximation to this, which seems daring given the signature look of the house (tweet costume, pearl necklaces and quilted leather bags).
It is therefore not about the question to whom this collection should be addressed. Certainly not to the well-to-do woman from the mid-50s, which one brings (true to the stereotype) in connection with the house. Chanel has been undergoing a makeover for several years, manifesting his current (fashion-wise celebrated) collection as a way of sticking to this course. For some time now, it’s no longer just the extravagant wives of super-rich financial investors who are hot on the new collections. Haute Couture has moved into the middle of society and now wants to be seen in the body of young, style-conscious women.
Young star Kaia Gerber
Indicative enough for this is Lagerfeld’s new muse and campaign face Kaia Gerber. The 16-year-old daughter of the ex-supermodel Cindy Crawford is currently not aware of orders to rescue and lets her (former) model models Gigi and Bella Hadid, Kendall Jenner, Karlie Kloss and Co. currently look stupid from the wash. At the past fashion shows, she was the best booked model, in addition to Chanel she signed advertising contracts for Omega (for this job recently in Berlin), Marc Jacobs and Miu Miu. At the same time, the young teenager does not correspond to the currently popular model type à la Mica Arganaraz, Kiki Willems or Ruth Bell. Instead of striking features and bald shaving, she comes across as angelic and immaculate. The FAZ dubbed the hype about the model scion at the beginning of the year with the words „Kaia Gerber raves the fashion world – although she is pretty“. Lily-Rose Depp, daughter of Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis, whose pagan beauty had done it to Lagerfeld, was last. So Chanel of his favorite aesthetic line (commercial beauty image against the „body positivity“ movement) then just can not.
Forever Young
Nevertheless, the choice of young models is obviously accompanied by the rejuvenation of the label. And on these transparent caps, hats and boots can be justified much better. A smart move that might, slowly but surely, be able to rethink haute couture (remember the 2014 Cara Delevigne in sneakers and tracksuit bottoms on the Chanel catwalk). Whether young women can finally afford a part of the collection is quite questionable. What is certain, however, is that they increasingly want to identify themselves with the Chanel brand, while the actual regular clientele insists on eternal youth. Synergy effects that the label knows how to use.
