Das Jahr endet mit zwei Filmen sehr unterschiedlicher Art. Einmal ein ganz böser Horrorfilm, der sich ins Gehirn einbrennt und ein Zeichentrickfilm über das Leben von Vincent van Gogh.
„THE KILLING OF A SACREED DEER“ – Horror, Krimi – GB,Irland – 2017
Regie: Yorgos Lanthimos
Cast: Nicole Kidman, Colin Farrell, Barry Keoghan, Raffey Cassidy

Der griechische Regisseur Yorgos Lanthimos hat sich in den letzten Jahren in die obere Riege der Top-Regisseure der internationalen Filmwelt hineingearbeitet. Schon sein letzter Film „The Lobster“ lief auf den Internationalen Filmfestspielen in Cannes, ebenso wie jetzt sein neustes Werk. Übrigens eines von 4 Auftritten der Schauspielerin Nicole Kidman in Cannes 2017 innerhalb eines einzigen Festivals – Rekord! Kidman spielt hier in „The Killing“ zusammen mit Colin Farrell ein Ärzteehepaar, welches von einem 16-jährigen Jungen tyrannisiert wird. Dessen Vater starb nämlich unter den Händen des Herzchirurgen Steven (Colin Farrell) auf dem Operationstisch. Und als Grieche bringt Lanthimos natürlich auch die griechische Mythologie hinein: Iphigenie auf Tauris. Diese sollte auf Verlangen der Götter vom eigenen Vater Agamemnon geopfert werden, um den Griechen die Fahrt von Aulis nach Troja zu ermöglichen.
So auch in diesem Film: der 16-jährige Martin stellt dem Chirurgen Steven ein Ultimatum: Entweder tötet er eines seiner Kinder oder die ganze Familie wird untergehen. Um seiner Drohung ein wenig Druck zu verleihen, lässt Martin auf wundersame Weise die Beine von Sohn Bob taub und lahm werden. Ihr seht, hier ist auch ein wenig Fantasy im Spiel. Aber dieser Film ist nichts für zarte Seelen. Der bösartige Horror ist kaum zu steigern.
Also definitiv kein Film für jedermann.

„LOVING VINCENT“ – Zeichentrickfilm – GB, Polen – 2017

Schon viele Filme sind über den Ausnahmekünstler Vincent van Gogh gemacht worden. Der berühmteste ist sicher der aus dem Jahre 1956 mit Kirk Douglas in der Hauptrolle. Der letzte, der auffiel, war von 2010 mit dem englischen Sherlock Holmes Darsteller Benedict Cumberbatch.
Das polnisch-englische Regie-Duo Kobiela und Welchman wählte einen anderen Ansatz: Nicht der Maler selbst sollte im Mittelpunkt stehen, sondern seine Maltechnik. Dafür wurde eine fiktive Handlung gewählt, deren Geschichte auch erst ein Jahr nach van Goghs Tod beginnt: Armand Roulin, der Sohn des Postmeisters Joseph Roulin (dieser war auch im echten Leben ein enger Freund von van Gogh in dessen Zeit im südfranzösischen Städtchen Arles), bekommt von seinem Vater den Auftrag, einen verspäteten Brief des Künstlers an seinen Bruder Theo zu überbringen, der in Paris lebt. Doch Theo ist nur ein halbes Jahr nach Vincent ebenfalls verstorben. Daraufhin beschließt der junge Armand (Douglas Booth) mehr über diesen mysteriösen Maler zu erfahren und forscht speziell über den bis zuletzt nicht ganz geklärten Tod. Denn Vincent van Gogh hatte sich selbst am 27. Juli 1890 eine Kugel in den Bauch geschossen. Zwei Tage später starb er an den Folgen dieser Schussverletzung. Die Beweggründe und die genauen Umstände dieser Tat sind bis heute nicht geklärt.
Das Regie-Duo Kobiela und Welchman hatten die Idee, zunächst den Film mit realen Schauspielern zu filmen, um dann Szene für Szene den Film durch heutige Maler im Stile van Goghs nachzuzeichnen, bzw. zu malen. So entstanden 65.000 Zeichnungen, die diesen Film zu einem einmaligen Oeuvre werden lassen.

The year ends with two films of very different kinds. One is a horror film that burns into the brain and the second is a cartoon about the life of Vincent van Gogh.

The Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos has become in recent years one of the top directors of the international film world. Already his last film „The Lobster“ ran at the International Film Festival in Cannes, as well as now his latest work. By the way, one of 4 performances of actress Nicole Kidman in Cannes 2017 within a single festival – record! Kidman plays here with Colin Farrell a Doctors couple, which is bullied by a 16-year-old boy. The boys father died under the hands of cardiac surgeon Steven (Colin Farrell) on the operating table. And of course, as a Greek, Lanthimos also brings in Greek mythology: Iphigenia on Tauris. According to the gods, Iphigenia was to be sacrificed by his own father Adamemnon to enable the Greeks travel from Aulis to Troy.
So in this movie: the 16-year-old Martin gives the surgeon Steven an ultimatum: Either he kills one of his children or the whole family will perish. To put some pressure on his threat, he miraculously leaves the legs of Steven’s son Bob numb and lame. You see, here’s a little fantasy on the game. But this movie is not for delicate souls. The evil horror can hardly be increased.
So definitely not a movie for everyone.

Many films have been made about the exceptional artist Vincent van Gogh. The most famous is that of 1956 with Kirk Douglas in the lead role. The last one that came out was from 2010 with the English Benedict Cumberbatch (“ Sherlock Holmes“).
The Polish-English director duo Kobiela and Welchman choose a different approach: not the painter himself should be the focus, but his painting technique. For this purpose, a fictive act was chosen whose story begins only one years after van Gogh’s death: Armand Roulin, the son of the postmaster Joseph Roulin (was in real a close friend of van Gogh in his time in the southern French town of Arles) should bring a belated letter from the artist to his brother Theo, who lives in Paris. But Theo died just half a year after Vincent. Then, the young Armand (Douglas Booth) decides to learn more about this mysterious painter and researches specifically about the not completely clarified death. Because Vincent van Gogh had shot himself on July 27, 1890 a bullet in his stomach. Two days later, he died as a result of this gunshot wound. The reasons and the exact circumstances of this death are still unknown.
The directing duo Kobiela and Welchman had the idea to first film the movie with real actors, and then draw scene after scene by today’s painter in the style of van Gogh. This is how 65,000 drawings were created, which make this film a unique oeuvre.
