Wiedersehen nach 23 Jahren mit einer der schönsten Frauen.
Es ist schon erstaunlich welche Zufälle einem das Leben beschert. 20 Jahre habe ich als Modefotograf in Paris gelebt und das Supermodel Christy Turlington viele Male auf den Laufstegen in Paris und New York erlebt. Zuletzt bei den Haute Couture Shows 1994. Und jetzt, 23 Jahre später, steht sie vor mir und erklärt mir ihre Charity Aktion zugunsten von schwangeren Müttern, EVERY MOTHER COUNTS.
Christy Turlington (*1969), dessen Vater Pilot der Airline PanAm war und deren südamerikanische Mutter Flugbegleiterin, wurde schon im Alter von 14 Jahren von einem Fotografen entdeckt. Mit 18 Jahren ging sie nach New York und wurde Model bei der Agentur Eileen Ford.

Eine steile Karriere begann. Bald lief sie auf allen Fashion Shows in Mailand, Paris, London und New York. In den 90er Jahren gehörte sie zu den Big Five der Supermodels, mit Linda Evangelista, Claudia Schiffer, Cindy Crawford und Naomi Campbell.

Ihr Portrait ziert über 500 Titelfotos der Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Marie Claire, W-Magazine und viele andere. So auch den Millennium Titel der Amerikanischen Vogue vom November 1999. Die Deutsche Vogue zeigt Christy auf dem aktuellen Cover vom Oktober 2017.
Doch noch während der Karriere als internationales Top Model hatte sie den Wunsch etwas Sinnvolleres mit ihrem Leben anzufangen, als nur vor den Kameras der Fotografen zu posieren. Deshalb holte sie 1994 ihren Schulabschluss nach und begann auf der New York University ein Studium für Literatur und fernöstliche Philosophie. Später folgte noch ein Studium über Public Health auf der Columbia University.
Ende der 90er Jahre lernte sie den Schauspieler Edward Burns kennen. 2003 heirateten sie. Im selben Jahr bekamen sie ihr erstes Kind Grace. Doch bei der Geburt kam es zu Komplikationen und nur unter großer Anstrengung der Ärzte überlebten Christy Turlington und ihr Kind.
Angeregt durch den Schock, bei der Geburt ihrer Tochter beinahe gestorben zu sein, beschäftigte sich Christy Turlington immer mehr mit dem Thema der pränatalen Diagnostik und Geburtshilfe. Und sie erfuhr, dass in unterwickelten Ländern wie in Afrika, Asien und Südamerika viele Frauen sterben müssen, weil keine ausreichende medizinische Versorgung vorhanden ist. Geschätzt werden 300.000 Tote pro Jahr. Aber 98% von ihnen könnten noch leben, hätten sie rechtzeitig Hilfe bekommen.
Deshalb gründete Christy Turlington Burns im Jahr 2010 die Non Profit Organisation EVERY MOTHER COUNTS, um auf die Missstände aufmerksam zu machen und die Gesundheitsversorgung von Müttern so weit wie möglich zu verbessern. Im selben Jahr drehte sie den Dokumentarfilm „No Woman, No Cry“, indem sie das Schicksal der Frauen in den Ländern Tanzania, Bangladesh, Guetemala und in den Vereinigten Staaten beschreibt. Der Film wurde mit Anerkennung auf dem Tribeka Filmfestival in New York gezeigt und auf dem Oprah Winfrey Network Kanal im Fernsehen ausgestrahlt.

Um Gelder für Ihr Projekt zu generieren hatte Christy Turlington die Idee durch Läufe über lange Strecken (z.B. 200 Meilen in Oregon) sowie durch Beteiligungen beim New York Marathon mehr Aufmerksamkeit in der Öffentlichkeit zu erzielen. Mittlerweiler werden dadurch pro Jahr ca. 4 Millionen durch Spenden eingenommen.

Dies war auch der Grund, warum Christy Turlington für dieses Wochenende zum Marathon nach Berlin kam. Ihre langjährige Freundin Tina Lutz, eine deutsche Modedesignerin, die in New York und Berlin lebt, hatte sie auf den Berlin Marathon aufmerksam gemacht. Gesagt, getan. Aber es gab nicht nur Marathon. Am ersten Tag der Reise gab es einen Panel im Soho House Berlin, wo sie ihr Thema einem interessierten Publikum vorstellen konnte. Danach am Abend ein Dinner im Restaurant Borchardt zu ihren Ehren. Eingeladen hatte Christiane Arp, Chefin der Deutschen Vogue und seit vielen Jahren große Verehrerin von Christy Turlington, wie Christiane Arp bei ihrer Eröffnungsrede zugab. Mehr geht nicht…

Ich würde mich freuen nicht wieder 20 Jahre warten zu müssen um Christy Turlington in unserer Stadt wiederzusehen. Ich hoffe, dass ihr der Aufenthalt gefallen hat und sie einen Koffer in Berlin läßt…

Christy Turlington Burns – Every Mother Counts

Reunion after 20 years with one of the most beautiful woman.
It is astonishing which coincidences live gives you. For over 20 years I have lived as correspondent for a german newspaper in Paris and saw the supermodel Christy Turlington many times on the catwalks in Paris and New York. Finally at the Haute Couture Shows 1994. And now, 23 years later, she stands in front of me and tells me her charity action in favor of pregnant mothers, EVERY MOTHER COUNTS.
Christy Turlington, whose father was a pilot at the PanAm Airline and whose South American mother was a flight attendant, was discovered at the age of 14 by a photographer. At the age of 18 she went to New York and became a model at Eileen Ford Model Agency.
A great career began. Soon she ran at all fashion shows in Milan, Paris, London and New York. In the 90s she was one of the Big Five of the Supermodels, with Linda Evangelista, Claudia Schiffer, Cindy Crawford and Naomi Campbell.
Her portrait was published on more than 500 titles of Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Marie Claire, W-magazines and many others. Including the Millennium Title of the American Vogue of November 1999. The German Vogue shows Christy on the current cover from October 2017.
But still during her career as an international top model, Christy Turlington had the desire to capture something more meaningful with her life than posing in front of the cameras. That is why she graduated in 1994 and started studying literature and Far Eastern philosophy at New York University. Later on she was studying public health at Columbia University.
At the end of the 90s she met the actor Edward Burns. In 2003 they married. In the same year they got their first child Grace. But at birth there were complications and only with great effort the doctors could survive Christy Turlington and her child.
Encouraged by the shock of nearly dying at the birth of her daughter, Christy Turlington became more concerned with the subject of prenatal diagnostic and obstetrics. And she learned that many women in countries like Africa, Asia and South America must die because there is not enough medical care. Estimated 300,000 death per year. But 98% of them could still live if they had received help in time.
That is why Christy Turlington Burns founded the nonprofit organization EVERY MOTHER COUNTS in 2010 to draw attention to the grievances and to improve the health care of mothers as much as possible. In the same year, she filmed the documentary „No Woman, No Cry“ by describing the fate of women in the countries of Tanzania, Bangladesh, Guetemala and the United States. The film was shown with recognition at the Tribeka Filmfestival in New York and broadcast on the Oprah Winfrey Network channel on TV.

To generate funds for her project, Christy Turlington had the idea to gain more attention in the public through runs over long distances (for example 200 miles in Oregon) as well as participating in the New York Marathon. Meanwhile about 4 million are donated each year.
This was the reason why Christy Turlington came to Berlin for the weekend. Her longtime friend Tina Lutz, a German fashion designer who lives in New York and Berlin, had drawn attention to the Berlin Marathon. Said and done. But there was not just Marathon. On the first day of the tour, there was a panel at the Soho House Berlin, where she could present her subjects to an interested audience. On the second day there were several meetings with German media and in the evening a dinner at the restaurant Borchardt in her honor. Christiane Arp, CEO of the German Vogue, is a great admirer of Christy Turlington for long time, as she said at her opening speech. At the same time, at the Milano Fashion Week, the other Supermodels were presented by Donatella Versace at the Versace Fashion Show – Christy Turlington decided for Berlin…
I would not be happy to have to wait another 20 years to see Christy Turlington again in Berlin. I hope she enjoyed the stay and will leave a suitcase in Berlin (as we say so…).
