„GREATEST SHOWMAN“ – Musical – USA – 2017

Regie: Michael Gracey
Cast: Hugh Jackman, Michelle Williams, Zac Efron, Rebecca Ferguson, Zendaya
Filmverleih: Fox Deutschland

„DAS LEUCHTEN DER ERINNERUNG – The Leisure Seeker“ – Tragik – Komödie – USA – 2017

Regie: Paolo Virzi
Cast: Helen Mirren, Donald Sutherland
Filmverleih: Concorde Film

The year starts in the cinema a bit weak, even if the two films presented shine with top occupations.
„GREATEST SHOWMAN“ – Musical – USA – 2017
Director: Michael Gracey
Cast: Hugh Jackman, Michelle Williams, Zac Efron, Rebecca Ferguson, Zendaya
Film Distribution: Fox Germany
The film tells the true story of the circus director P.T. Barnum, who in the mid-19th century in the US managed a curiosity cabinet (short-lived, ladies with man beard, contortionist, et.c.) and later founded a circus with exotic animals. For the Swedish opera singer Jenny Lind, he organized an America tour that made her famous and earned him a lot of money. He always tried to get out of the grubby image of a fraudulent showman and even engaged in politics. He became mayor of the small community Bridgeport and ran for the Senate. But he lost to his Democratic challenger William Barnum, who was even his cousin (back then, the Republicans were the Liberals and the Democratic Party the Conservatives, unlike today).
Unfortunately, the film only partially records the story of this fascinating man, focusing mainly on large-scale dance scenes and show performances. Just like a Broadway musical. That’s nice, but it gets boring in the long run. And even top star Hugh Jackman, who claims that he always wanted to shoot a film with singing and dancing, can not save the film in the role of Barnum.
For fans of musical and dance.

„DAS LEUCHTEN DER ERINNERUNG – The Leisure Seeker“ – Tragedy – Comedy – USA – 2017
Director: Paolo Virzi
Cast: Helen Mirren, Donald Sutherland
Film Distribution: Concorde Film
The two leading actors alone are worth a visit to the cinema. Does one of you really still know his movie „Don’t Look Now“? With him, Donald Sutherland became famous in 1973. Even the more recently shot film „Klute“, an exciting thriller shot in black and white, with Jane Fonda as his film partner, brought Donald Sutherland in the first raw of international actors. Unfortunately, he could not keep this level and mostly handed it later only for supporting roles. With the evil President Snow in the „Hunger Games“ he got in the last few years even more attention. And Helen Mirren is one of the great mimes of her time. The older she gets, the better she is. Her Oscar winning role as Queen Elizabeth of England in „The Queen“ was terrific.
Director Paolo Virzi therefore relies entirely on his wonderful leading actor and lets them just play. The film is a cinema adaptation of the novel „The Leisure Seeker“ by Michel Zadoorian.
An elderly couple, who have been married for 50 years, would like to remember the most beautiful moments in their life together. They rent a motor home and decide to drive down the entire east coast from New York to Key West. In the evening at the campsites they look at their old slides from the past. Unfortunately John (Donald Sutherland) becomes increasingly demented – creating both funny and sad moments in the film.
A wonderful movie about love and memory, played by two exceptional actors.
