„DER SEIDENE FADEN“ (Phantom Thread) – Drama – GB,USA – 2017

Regie: Paul Thomas Anderson
Cast: Daniel Day-Lewis, Vicky Krieps, Lesley Manville, Camilla Rutherford
Filmverleih: Universal

„PHANTOM THREAD“ – Drama – UK, USA – 2017

Cast: Daniel Day-Lewis, Vicky Krieps, Lesley Manville, Camilla Rutherford

Anyone who has ever seen in the movie from 1988 „The Unbearable Lightness of Being“, the exceptional actor Daniel-Day Lewis (* 1957) will be forever at the feet (with this film, incidentally, Juliette Binoch had as well her big break). Rarely has there been such a handsome and at the same time brilliant acting actor. Except for Marlon Brando I can not think of much. Daniel-Day Lewis is the only male actor to have won three Academy Awards (for „My Left Foot“, „There Will Be Blood“ and „Lincoln“). His specialty: His characters vary between good and evil. And he prepares himself meticulously for every role. A perfectionist. He always lets himself take big breaks between his shoots. In 20 years he participated in just 7 productions and since „Lincoln“ 5 years have passed already. After this movie he wants to retire completely from the film business.
All the more important to watch this maybe last movie with Daniel-Day Lewis.
The story: It’s about a well-known dressmaker in London after World War II. At that time English society is still very dusty and etiquette and traditions are upheld. The tailor Reynolds Woodcock lives according to these principles, strictly according to norms in a well-organized and controlled life. It is still a long way to the wild 60s.
Only in his love life Reynolds is extremely unstable. Many affairs without firm ties. Maybe he’s just too married to his profession. Suddenly a young lady, into whom he spontaneously falls in love, snows into this life-time. She is a waitress in a pub, but quickly becomes Reynolds lover and muse. But she does not want to be content with a subordinate role and begins to confidently look for her own place in both the life of Reynolds and in his fashion business. Can that work?
In normal life, Daniel-Day Lewis has been married to Rebecca Miller, the daughter of writer Arthur Miller, for 30 years and lives with her and two children in Ireland. From a previous relationship with the French actress Isabelle Adjani, he has a son. In 2014 he was knighted by Prince William.
Conclusion: For the discerning movie lover
