Ein weiterer Blockbuster mit dem Hintergrund der griechischen Mythologie
Die Verfilmungen von Figuren aus der Antike, aus der Zeit der Ägypter oder aus der Zeit des Römischen Reiches, sind beliebte Stoffe für große Filmproduktionen mit gigantischen Ausstattungen, riesigen Hintergrundbauten und Superstars der Filmindustrie (und natürlich gigantischem Budget).
Von „Cleopatra“ von 1963 mit LIZ TAYLOR, „Spartakus“ von 1960 mit KIRK DOUGLAS, „Ben Hur“ von 1959 mit CHARLTON HESTON, bis zu „Gladiator“ von 2000 mit RUSSEL CROWE und „Troja“ von 2004 mit BRAD PITT.

Nicht zu vergessen die frühere Verfilmung der Odyssee von 1954, „Die Fahrten des Odysseus“, mit KIRK DOUGLAS und SILVANA MANGANO in den Hauptrollen.
Mit einem Budget von 10 Millionen Dollar war es die bis dahin teuerste Filmproduktion der Filmgeschichte.

Die neuste Verfilmung der “Odyssee“ nach den Epen des griechischen Dichters HOMER (ca. 750 v. Chr.) kommt mit einem Budget von 250 Millionen Dollar und 3 Stunden Länge genauso gigantisch daher, wie wir es von Monumentalfilmen, heute Blockbuster genannt, erwarten.
Dazu eine Starbesetzung mit MAT DAMON als Odysseus, ANNE HATHAWAY als Penelope, TOM HOLLAND als ihr Sohn Telemachos, ZENDAYA als Göttin Athene, CHARLIZE THERON als Kalypso und ROBERT PATTINSON als einer der bösen Freier, der darauf hofft, dass Odysseus nie zurückkehrt, damit er Penelope heiraten und Herrscher über Ithaka werden kann.
Kleine Anekdote am Rande: Für die Verfilmung von „Troja“ war 2002 neben WOLFGANG PETERSEN auch CHRISTOPHER NOLAN als Regisseur vorgesehen, doch es wurde der Deutsche. Dafür drehte NOLAN dann „Batman Begins“ und zwei weitere „Batman“-Filme.
Da CHRISTOPHER NOLAN („Oppenheimer“) nicht nur die Regie, sondern in fast allen seinen Filme auch das Drehbuch schreibt, ist Literatur und Geschichte die Basis seiner Arbeit. Daher ist es nur verständlich, dass er seine 2004 versäumte Homer-Verfilmung nachholen wollte.

Handlung
Die Handlung aus der „Odyssee“ von Homer (ca. 700 v. Chr.) dĂĽrfte eigentlich jedem bekannt sein.
Von Troja bis zur Insel Ithaka, Google Maps
Nach dem Sieg der Griechen über Troja versucht Odysseus, König der Insel Ithaka, mit seinen Soldaten in die Heimat zurückzukehren, werden aber von dem Zyklopen Polyphem bedroht.
Nur durch eine List, indem sie sein einziges Auge zerstören und so ihn blenden, können sie sich befreien.
Da Polyphem aber ein Sohn des Gottes Poseidon ist, schwört dieser Rache und verhindert die Rückkehr von Odysseus und seinen Gefolgsleuten durch eine Irrfahrt, bei der sie vielen Gefahren und Prüfungen ausgesetzt sind, denen letztlich nur Odysseus widerstehen kann.
Am Schluss ist er allein unterwegs und wird durch die Nymphe Kalypso sieben Jahre auf deren Insel festgehalten, bis er sich schlieĂźlich von ihr befreien und nach Ithaka zurĂĽckkehren kann.
Dort muss er seine Widersacher besiegen, die seine Frau Penelope heiraten und sich damit selbst zum König machen wollen.
Mit Hilfe seines Sohnes Telemachos und dem Hirten Eumaios gelingt es ihm die Verräter zu besiegen und seine Frau in die Arme zu schließen.
Kritik
Für meinen Kino-Besuch wählte ich die erste Vorstellung am Nachmittag des Premierentages um 16.30 Uhr im Kiez-Kino Hackischer Markt in Berlin-Mitte.
Ich mag diese kleinen Säle mit einer überschaubaren Menge an Besuchern und persönlichem Einchecken durch einen Mitarbeiter.
Und ich kann kommen und gehen, ohne jemanden zu stören, da ich immer am Rande sitze.

Das erste, was mir auffiel, war ein furchtbares Dröhnen aus den Lautsprechern.
CHRISTOPHER NOLAN hatte auf eine klassische Begleitmusik für seinen Film verzichtet und es durch elektronische Klänge ersetzt, die wohl mehr Furcht und Schrecken verbreiten sollen.
Ich empfand es eher als störend und war gezwungen mir Ohropax in die Ohren zu stopfen (kann ich nur jedem Besucher empfehlen).

Das zweite war, dass MATT DAMON, mittlerweile auch schon 55 Jahre alt, in dieser Rolle einfach umwerfend gut ist.
Er spielt relativ zurĂĽckhaltend, ohne groĂźe WutausbrĂĽche und eher weise und ĂĽberlegt auf alle Widrigkeiten reagierend.
Die anderen Schauspieler dieses Super-Casts fand ich allerdings weniger ĂĽberzeugend.

ANNE HATHAWAY als Penelope spielt die Rolle der durchhaltenden Ehefrau mit viel Einsatz, doch passt der fröhliche Charakter der charmanten „Andy“ aus „Der Teufel trägt Prada“ besser zu ihr.

Die zurzeit sehr „gehypte“ ZENDAYA („Dune“) als Athene ist im Film nur Statistin ohne eigentliche Funktion und wenig Sprechtext.
LUPITA NYONGO als die schöne Helena ist eine komplette Fehlbesetzung und TOM HOLLAND („Spider Man“) als Sohn Telemachos steht meistens nur ausdruckslos herum.

Auch CHARLIZE THERON als Kalypso bleibt schwach.
Und SAMANTHA MORTON als angeblich betörende Circe ist so langweilig, dass der Zuschauer sich wundert, wie die Soldaten auf sie reinfallen konnten.

Einzig ROBERT PATTINSON („Twilight“) als Antinoos ist in seiner Rolle als der böse Freier am Hof von Ithaka, der Odysseus vom Thron stoßen will, überzeugend.

Was mir aber an dem Film gefallen hat, ist das Herausstellen der Verantwortlichkeit, die man nicht nur als Mensch im Allgemeinen, sondern auch als Soldat im Kriege hat.
Der Verlust der Menschlichkeit ist eines der schlimmsten Dinge, die im Krieg passieren.
Wie zurzeit die Tötung von Zivilisten und die Folter von Gefangenen im Ukraine-Krieg.
Im Film muss Odysseus immer wieder mit Schrecken an die Gräueltaten zurückdenken, die sowohl er, als auch seine Soldaten an den Trojanern begangen haben.

Und er stellt fest, dass diese Kriegserfahrungen ihn verändert haben und bis heute nachwirken.
Erst Kalypso kann ihn von dieser Last befreien.
Fazit: Unterhaltsames Fantasy-Kino mit Aussagen, die zum Nachdenken anregen.
Der Film „Troja“ von WOLFGANG PETERSEN war aber besser.

New Movies in Theaters: *The Odyssey* Starring Matt Damon

Another blockbuster rooted in Greek mythology
Film adaptations featuring figures from antiquity—whether from the era of the Egyptians or the Roman Empire—are popular subject matter for major productions characterized by lavish set designs, massive backdrops, and film industry superstars (not to mention colossal budgets).
Examples range from *Cleopatra* (1963) with Elizabeth Taylor, *Spartacus* (1960) with Kirk Douglas, and *Ben-Hur* (1959) with Charlton Heston, to *Gladiator* (2000) with Russell Crowe and *Troy* (2004) with Brad Pitt.

Not to be overlooked is the earlier 1954 adaptation of the *Odyssey*—titled *Ulysses*—starring Kirk Douglas and Silvana Mangano.
With a budget of $10 million, it was the most expensive film production in history at the time.

The latest adaptation of the *Odyssey*—based on the epics of the Greek poet Homer—arrives with a $250 million budget and a three-hour runtime, boasting the kind of colossal scale we expect from epic movies (or „blockbusters,“ as they are known today).
It features a star-studded cast: Matt Damon as Odysseus, Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Tom Holland as their son Telemachus, Zendaya as the goddess Athena, Charlize Theron as Calypso, and Robert Pattinson as one of the villainous suitors hoping Odysseus never returns so that he can marry Penelope and become ruler of Ithaca.
A brief aside: Back in 2002, Christopher Nolan was considered alongside Wolfgang Petersen to direct the movie *Troy*, though the job ultimately went to the German director.
Nolan went on to direct *Batman Begins* and two subsequent *Batman* movies instead.
Since Christopher Nolan (*Oppenheimer*) writes the screenplays for almost all his movies in addition to directing them, literature and history form the foundation of his work.
It is therefore entirely understandable that he wanted to finally tackle the Homer adaptation he had missed out on in 2004.

Story
The plot of Homer’s *Odyssey* (c. 750 BC) is likely familiar to everyone.

After the Greek victory over Troy, Odysseus—King of the island of Ithaca—attempts to return home with his soldiers but finds himself threatened by the Cyclops Polyphemus.
They manage to escape only through a ruse: destroying the creature’s single eye and thereby blinding him.
However, since Polyphemus is the son of the god Poseidon, the god vows revenge and thwarts the return of Odysseus and his men by forcing them into a long, wandering journey filled with perils and trials—ordeals that, in the end, only Odysseus survives.

Eventually left to travel alone, he is held captive for seven years on the island of the nymph Calypso, until he finally manages to break free and return to Ithaca.
There, he must defeat his adversaries, who seek to marry his wife, Penelope, and usurp the throne.
With the help of his son Telemachus and the herdsman Eumaeus, he succeeds in vanquishing the traitors and reuniting with his wife.
Critics
For my cinema visit, I chose the first afternoon screening—at 4:30 PM on opening day—at the Kiez-Kino Hackescher Markt in Berlin-Mitte.
I like these small auditoriums with their modest audience size and the personal check-in process handled by a staff member. Plus, I can come and go without disturbing anyone, since I always sit on the aisle.

The first thing I noticed was a terrible droning sound coming from the speakers.
Christopher Nolan had opted against a traditional musical score for the film, replacing it with electronic sounds intended to evoke a greater sense of dread and terror.
I found it rather irritating and was forced to stuff earplugs into my ears (something I’d highly recommend to any moviegoer).

The second thing was that Matt Damon—now 55 years old—is simply outstanding in this role.
He delivers a relatively understated performance, avoiding big outbursts of anger and instead responding to every adversity with wisdom and composure.
I found the other actors in this star-studded cast only moderately convincing.

Anne Hathaway plays the role of the steadfast wife, Penelope, with great commitment, yet the cheerful persona of the charming „Andy“ from *The Devil Wears Prada* suits her better.

Zendaya (*Dune*), currently the subject of so much hype, is little more than an extra in the role of Athena; she serves no real function and has very few lines.
Lupita Nyong’o is completely miscast as the beautiful Helen, while Tom Holland (*Spider-Man*), playing the son Telemachus, mostly just stands around looking expressionless.

Charlize Theron also fails to impress as Calypso.
And Samantha Morton, as the supposedly bewitching Circe, is so dull that the viewer wonders how the soldiers could have fallen for her.

Only Robert Pattinson (*Twilight*) is convincing in his role as Antinous—the villainous suitor at the court of Ithaca who seeks to oust Odysseus from the throne.

However, what I did like about the movie was its emphasis on the responsibility everyone has —not just as a human being in general, but also as a soldier at war.
The loss of humanity is one of the worst things that happens in war.
Much like the killing of civilians and the torture of prisoners we are seeing right now in the war in Ukraine.
Throughout the movie, Odysseus is repeatedly haunted by memories of the atrocities that both he and his soldiers committed against the Trojans.
He realizes that these wartime experiences have changed him and continue to affect him to this day.
It is only Calypso who can free him from this burden.

Conclusion: Entertaining fantasy cinema with thought-provoking themes.
However, Wolfgang Petersen’s film *Troy* was better.
