„HAPPY END“ – Drama – Austria, DE, FR – 2017

Regie: Michael Haneke
Cast: Isabelle Huppert, Jean-Louis Trintignant, Matthieu Kassovitz, Fantine Harduin
Filmverleih: X-Verleih

„WHAT HAPPENED TO MONDAY“ – Action, Drama, USA, GB, FR, BE – 2017

Regie: Tommy Wirkola
Cast: Noomi Rapace, Glenn Close, Willem Dafoe
Filmverleih: Splendid

Oscar Nominierung?

Today with two very different films: An American thriller and a new drama by Oscar winner Michael Haneke:

„HAPPY END“ – drama – Austria, DE, FR – 2017

Director: Michael Haneke
Cast: Isabelle Huppert, Jean-Louis Trintignant, Matthieu Kassovitz, Fantine Harduin
Film rental: X-Rental

Michael Haneke quite obviously has a problem with our society. It is interesting to see which variations of these problems he always finds in his movies. In „Caché“ of 2005 for example it was a culpable behavior in childhood or in „Funny Games“ from 1997, brutal kids destroyed a family. In „The white band“ a whole generation is responsible for the development of the cruelties of national socialism in the 30-ties. His trademark: the cool distance to his protagonists. The spectator looks at them as if in a test tube and can observe the evilness from the outside.

Michael Haneke’s trademark is also his weakness. The cool distancing prevents the viewer from being able to get into the people. Only once Haneke descended from this path: In his film „Love“, which is also my favorite. The Oscar for the best foreign language film 2013 for this movie was absolutely deserved.

And now „Happy End“. It is about a family history like in „Caché“. It is the story of the wealthy Laurent family in Calais, northern France. Anne (Isabelle Hupperts) runs the business of the family-owned construction company. Her adult son is to support her, but only brings difficulties. Her brother Thomas (Mathieu Kassovitz), also residing in a large family house, lives separated from his wife and daughter Eve (Fantine Harduin). When one day the divorced wife of brother Thomas makes a suicide attempt, the daughter comes to the father. But he knows nothing about her. So she feels quite alone in her new family. Especially since the father is more interested in the S / M games with his new girlfriend. When the father of Anne, George (Jean-Louis Trintignant), who also lives in the house, makes a suicide attempt too, the situation escalates.

For Cineastes and Haneke fans.

„WHAT HAPPENED TO MONDAY“ – Action, Drama, USA, GB, FR, BE – 2017

Director: Tommy Wirkola
Cast: Noomi Rapace, Glenn Close, Willem Dafoe
Movie rental: Splendid

A real hit is the new film of the Norwegian director Tommy Wirkola („Hänsel & Gretel“) with top star Noomi Rapace (* 1979), all of whom we know as Lisbeth Salander from the „Millenium Trilogy“ of author Stig Larsson („Blindness“, „Verdammnis“ , „Forgiveness“).

„What happened to Monday“ plays in a gloomy future where only one child is allowed because of overpopulation, subsequent children are frozen. Supervisor Nicolette Cayman (Glenn Close) looks after this rules. When a family gets seven sisters, the grandfather Terence (Willem Dafoe, sometimes in a positive role) hides them. The idea: In the outside world, they appear as a single person, who always appear in the same outfit as Karen Settman. Only at home they can be as they are – quite different. Everyone can leave the house once a week – each one is named after a weekday. When „Monday“ one day will not come back, the situation is tense …

For friends of well-made action films and fans of Noomi Rapace, who shows their entire abilities here. Oscar nomination?
