Phil Collins live in Concert in Berlin

Nach Eric Clapton, dem Meister der Gitarre, war Phil Collins, der Meister des Schlagzeugs und des Popsongs, zu Besuch in Berlin.
Ein fast ausverkauftes Olympiastadion begrüßte um 20.20 Uhr mit freudigem Beifall und Jubelrufen den berühmten Musiker, der sein Leben lang Schlagzeuger, Sänger, Komponist und -was viele gar nicht wissen -auch Schauspieler war.
Mein Platz auf der Südseite des Stadions (Dank an den Veranstalter Semmel Concerts) ziemlich in der Mitte erlaubte mir einen wunderbaren Rundum-Blick über das gesamte Stadion und die Bühne, die aber immer noch ca. 200 Meter von mir entfernt war, sodass ich Phil Collins nur als kleines Pünktchen wahrnehmen konnte.

Doch auf den beiden großen Leinwänden, links und rechts der Bühne aufgebaut, konnte ich einen mit schwarzer Hose und schwarzem Pulli bekleideten, an einem Stock gehenden 68-jährigen Mann erkennen.
Nach einem Gruß und ein paar freundlichen, aufmunternden Worten an sein Berliner Publikum nahm er auf einem Stuhl platz, der mehr einem Barhocker glich. Hierauf würde er nun auch die ganze Zeit seines Konzertes sitzen bleiben, verkündete er.

Nur bei dem Song „In the air tonight“ wird er später aufstehen. Als wolle er seinem wohl berühmtesten Lied den nötigen Respekt zollen – ein Song, der besonders durch den plötzlichen Einsatz seines Schlagzeuges so bekannt wurde, dass er selber früher spielte.
Doch Schlagzeug spielen kann Phil Collins nicht mehr.
Anfang der 2010er Jahre machte sich bei Phil Collins eine Nervenkrankheit bei ihm bemerkbar, die zu einer Taubheit der linken Hand führte. Eine Operation an der Wirbelsäule sollte Abhilfe schaffen. Doch die Operation schlug fehl und nun kann er auch seinen rechten Fuß nicht mehr bewegen. Umso tragischer für einen Mann, der gerade in einer ruhelosen Energie die Basis seiner Kreativität hatte.
Phil Collins wurde 1951 in einem Vorort von London geboren. Als er mit 5 Jahren zu Weihnachten ein Schlagzeug bekam, hatte er das Instrument seines Lebens gefunden. Doch auch die Schauspielerei interessierte ihn und besuchte sogar eine Schauspielschule. Hier gründete er mit Mitschülern seine erste Band.
Als 1970 die Gruppe GENESIS einen neuen Drummer suchte, bewarb er sich mit 400 anderen um den Job – und bekam ihn.
Der Rest ist – fast – Geschichte. Eine beispiellose Karriere begann. Zunächst mit GENESIS und ab den 80er Jahren auch mit einer Solo-Karriere. Dabei avancierte er vom reinen Schlagzeuger auch zum Sänger, als Genesis-Frontmann Peter Gabriel 1975 die Gruppe verließ.
Neben Genesis und als Solist spielte er auch mit vielen verschieden Musikern in unterschiedlichen Formationen. So u.a. auch mit Eric Clapton, mit dem ihn eine lebenslange Freundschaft verbindet. Mit einer Big Band spielte er sogar 1998 beim Jazzfestival in Montreux.

Beim Konzert am Freitag in Berlin, welches zu seiner Tour „STILL NOT DEAD YET“ gehört und über 30 Konzerte in Europa und Nordamerika einschließt, spielte er alle großen Hits seiner Vergangenheit.
Phil Collins Musikstil geht von schmusig-sentimental („Another Day in Paradise“) bis zu rockigem Pop („You can’t hurry love“) und Jazz (durch das Hervorheben einer 4-köpfigen Blasinstrumenten-Gruppe mit Trompeten und Saxophon).
Zeit seines Lebens wurde ihm von Kritikern ein Stil vorgeworfen, der zu sehr nach Mainstream klingt.
Und wahrhaftig bedient er mit seinen Songs die Massen. In den früheren analogen Zeiten spielten die Radiostationen seine Songs rauf- und runter. Jeder wollte sie eben gerne hören.
Allein sein Song „Another Day in Paradiese“ wurde bis heute auf Youtube 269.002.674 Mal angeklickt!
Phil Collins ist neben Elton John und Eric Clapton (kultur24 berichtete von seinem Konzert in Berlin) sicher der wichtigste noch aktive Solo Musiker des ausgehenden 20. Jahrhunderts im Bereich Unterhaltungsmusik.
Daneben gibt es eigentlich nur noch die Band The Rolling Stones, die letztes Jahr am 22. Juni 2018 an gleicher Stelle ihren Auftritt hatte (kultur24 berichtete).
Meine Favoriten am Freitag in Berlin waren „Something happened on the way to heaven“, „You can’t hurry love“ und natürlich das unvermeidliche „In to the air“.
Als um 22.15 Uhr die Zugabe „Take me home“ erklingt, begleitet von Konfettiregen und Tausenden aufblitzenden Handy-Lichtern, bekomme ich kleine Tränen in die Augen. Sollte der Titel des letzten Liedes vielleicht wörtlich gemeint sein? Humpelnd, am Stock gehend und mit einem freundlichen Händewinken verabschiedete sich in Berlin nach 2 Stunden Konzert ein wunderbarer Musiker.

Nach einer Pause im August geht es mit dem Konzert in Dallas am 23. September in Dallas weiter in die USA.
Schluss ist am 19. Oktober 2019 in Las Vegas.

After Eric Clapton (kultur24 reported), the master of the guitar, Phil Collins, the master of drums and pop songs, came for a concert to Berlin.
An almost sold-out Olympic Stadium greeted at 20:20 clock with joyous applause and cheers the famous musician, who all his life long drummer, singer, composer and – what many do not even know – an actor. My place on the south side of the stadium (thanks to the organizer Semmel Concerts) pretty much in the middle allowed me a wonderful all-round view of the entire stadium, the stage was still about 200 yards away from me, so I could perceive Phil Collins only as a small dot.
But on the two big screens, built on the left and on the right side of the stage, I could see a 68-year-old man dressed in black trousers and a black pullover walking on a stick. After a greeting and a few friendly, encouraging words to his Berlin audience, he took a seat that looked more like a bar stool. He would then stay seated all the time of his concert, he announced. He will only get up later on the song „I am the air tonight“. As if he wanted to pay tribute to his probably most famous song – a song that became so well known, especially because of the sudden use of his drums, that he once played himself. But Phil Collins can not play drums anymore.
At the beginning of the 2010s, he was diagnosed with a nervous disease that left his left hand numb. Surgery on the spine should help. But the operation failed and now he can not move his right foot anymore. All the more tragic for a man who had the basis of his creativity in a restless energy.
Phil Collins was born in 1951 in a suburb of London. When he got a drum kit at Christmas at the age of five, he had found the instrument of his life.
But even the acting interested him and he attended a drama school. Here he founded his first band with classmates.
When in 1970 the group GENESIS was looking for a new drummer, he applied for the job with 400 others – and got it.
The rest is – almost – history.
An unprecedented career began. First with GENESIS and from the 80s also with a solo career. He also became a singer from pure drummer when Genesis frontman Peter Gabriel left the group in 1975. In addition to Genesis and as a soloist, he also played with many different musicians in different formations. So among others with Eric Clapton, with whom he has a lifelong friendship. With a big band, he even played in 1998 at the Jazz Festival in Montreux.
At the concert on Friday in Berlin, which belongs to his tour „STILL NOT DEAD YET“ and includes over 30 concerts in Europe and North America, he played all the big hits of his past. Phil Collin’s music style ranges from cuddly-sentimental („Another Day in Paradise“) to rocking pop („You can not hurry love“) and Jazz (by highlighting a 4-piece wind instrument group with trumpets and saxophone).
Throughout his life, critics accused him of a style that sounds too mainstream. And he really serves the masses with these songs. In the earlier analog times, the radio stations played up and down his songs. Everyone just wanted to hear them. His song „Another Day in Paradise“ alone was clicked on Youtube 269,002,674 times.
Next to Eric Clapton and Elton John, Phil Collins is certainly the most important solo musician of the late 20th century in the field of popular music. And who is still active today. In addition, there is really only the band The Rolling Stones, which last year on June 22, 2018 in the same place had their appearance (kultur24 reported).
My favorites on Friday night in Berlin were „Something Happened on the Way to Heaven“, „You Can not Hurt Love“ and of course the inevitable „In to the Air“.
When the encore „Take me home“ sound at 10:15 pm, accompanied by confetti rain and thousands of flashing mobile phone lights, I got a small tear in my eyes. Should the title of the last song be literally meant? Hopping on the stick and walking away with a friendly goodbye in Berlin after 2 hours of concert a wonderful musician left the stage.
