Restaurant Themroc in Berlin-Mitte

Berlin, like so many other cities, is known for its fast pace. For a long time it wasn’t easy to find a restaurant that told a dramatic story about the dishes, using ingredients you’ve never heard of and staging them as artistically as possible. Now it seems like one of these hip projects is popping up every other weekend. To be honest, I leave most of these places with disappointed taste buds and a bit confused about the careless coolness, which seems to be very popular in the service department at the moment. Themroc is not one of those places. To be exact, it’s the 180 degree opposite. The Yang, to the Ying of the abovementioned gastronomy.

The small shop on Torstraße doesn’t need an artificially dramatized story, because everything about it is wonderfully simple, authentic and honest. Starting with the interior, which looks like the home of an eccentric art lover. When you enter the shop, you come across the kitchen, actually you almost stand in it. It is not partly integrated into the restaurant premises to be „trendy“, but rather makes up half of the small room. The food is also not cooked in an adjoining room and prepared for show purposes in front of the customers. All of the daily 50-60 guests of the evening are taken care of and made happy by these few square meters and cook and owner Ali.

Every evening there is a choice of a starter, a main course, a vegetarian option and a dessert. Ali decides what to cook depending on what he discovers at the market in the morning and what he feels like eating at the time. As limited as the space in the kitchen is, as free is the space for the chef‘ s creativity. According to Ali, this is a rule that always applied, no matter who stood at the stove over the years. This makes it difficult to put a label on the cuisine because it is only a matter of time until somebody in that kitchen tears of that label and does what ever the hell he or she wants. The majority of the time the dishes move between classic French and Persian. However, they always contain loving preparation and the personal strengths of the current chef.

Another constant to me personally is the association of a visit to the home of a typical Italian Nonna and the end of the Pixar film Ratatouille, which manifests itself with every visit. It’s an unmistakable feeling of cosiness and home that runs through every aspect of the evening. Be it in regard to the waitress, who wraps you around her finger within about five minutes and gives you the feeling as if you have known each other for years and as if there is no guest she would rather have. About food and drinks, which works according to the local principle „just trust in what comes on the table, because one thing is for sure, it definitely tastes great“. Up to the cosy and homely atmosphere, which is owed to the space and interior – for example, when the weather is nice, all tables are simply moved outside.

Who is on the search for white tablecloths and superfood, would like to individually add or remove each ingredient on the plate, or would like to be addressed with a formal sense of distance, will be better off in a different one of the countless restaurants on Torstrasse.  But for those who are looking for a place that is bursting at the seams with the simple love of excellent food and warm hospitality, I have a warmest recommendation – off to Themroc.
