Zwei neue Ausstellungen über Inszenierungen in Räumen und einer Mappe mit exklusiven Prints und originaler Handschrift von Helmut Newton
Meine Leser wissen, dass die Helmut Newton Foundation in Berlin, beherbergt im Fotomuseum gleich neben dem Bahnhof Zoo, in regemäßigen Abständen die große Sammlung mit Fotografien von HELMUT NEWTON in immer neuen Konstellationen ausstellt.

„One Off“
Dieses Mal allerdings kam etwas Neues hinzu:
Eine Mappe mit 103 original Abzügen von HELMUT NEWTON zusammen mit seinen handgeschriebenen Texten unter jedem Bild, welche erklären, was und wer auf dem Foto zu sehen ist und wann es gemacht wurde.

Diese Mappe war ein Geschenk NEWTONS 1999 an seinen damals größten Sammler GERT ELFERING.
Der gebürtige Münchner ELFERING war selber mal Fotograf und Bildredakteur für Hochglanzmagazine.
Mitte der 1980er Jahre ging er nach Florida und gründete dort sein eigenes Unternehmen, welches überaus erfolgreich war.
So konnte er es sich leisten eine eigene Fotografie-Sammlung aufzubauen und dazu noch 1997 die Galerie Camera Work in der Kantstrasse 149 in Berlin zu gründen (heute im Besitz des Milliardärs Frederik Paulsen).
Zu einer Zeit, als der Kunstmarkt der Fotografie noch kaum große Aufmerksamkeit schenkte und die Bilder relativ günstig zu erwerben waren.
Wenige Jahre später verkaufte ELFERING das Portfolio an den amerikanischen Sammler LEON CONSTANTINER und 2008 wurde es bei Christie‘s in New York versteigert.
Über verschiedene Umwege kam diese wertvolle Mappe zu NICOLA ERNI, welche zusammen mit ihrem Mann, dem milliardenschweren Investmentmanager MARCEL ERNI, eine Kunstsammlung mit zwei eigenen Museen in Zug in der Schweiz betreibt.
Es ist eines der größten Privatsammlungen im Alpenland und ist besonders für seine Sammlung von Gemälden des amerikanischen Künstlers JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT bekannt.

Über gemeinsame Bekannte kam ein Kontakt mit MATTHIAS HARDER, dem Direktor der Helmut Newton Foundation zustande und der Wunsch wurde geäußert, die Blätter dieses Portfolios in Berlin auszustellen, da sie noch nie öffentlich gezeigt wurden.
Gesagt, getan.
Ab dem 5. Juni kann man die Serie in den Räumen der Stiftung im Fotomuseum bewundern.
Die Ausstellung läuft noch bis zum 15.11.2026.

„Rooms/ Stages“
Die zweite Ausstellung ist in sich auch noch einmal aufgeteilt.
Einmal sind überdimensionale Vergrößerungen (präsentiert in Form von Wandtapeten) von Fotografien von Helmut Newton zu sehen, bei denen die Räume, in denen NEWTON fotografierte, eine besondere Rolle spielten.

Auch wenn der Betrachter wohl überwiegend auf die nackten Mädels schaut, so hat NEWTON doch immer seine Produktionsorte sehr genau ausgewählt, um eine bestimmte Atmosphäre in den Aufnahmen zu erzeugen.
In einer zweiten Abteilung sieht man nun Bilder andere Fotografen, für die der Raum der wesentliche Inhalt ihrer Arbeiten darstellen.

Hier haben mir besonders die Fotografien von ROBERT POLIDORI und von GEORGES ROUSSE („Trompe l’oeil“) gefallen.

Two new exhibitions featuring spatial installations and a portfolio containing exclusive prints and original handwritten notes by Helmut Newton.
My readers know that the Helmut Newton Foundation in Berlin—housed in the Museum of Photography right next to Zoo Station—regularly displays its extensive collection of Helmut Newton photographs in ever-changing arrangements.

„One-Off“
This time, however, there was a new idea:
A portfolio containing 103 original prints by HELMUT NEWTON, accompanied by his handwritten captions beneath each image explaining the subject matter—what and who is depicted—and the date the photograph was taken.

Newton gifted this portfolio in 1999 to Gert Elfering, his most significant collector at the time.
A native of Munich, Elfering had previously worked as a photographer and picture editor for glossy magazines. In the mid-1980s, he moved to Florida and founded his own company, which proved to be immensely successful.
This success enabled him to build his own photography collection and, in 1997, to establish the Camera Work gallery at Kantstraße 149 in Berlin (now owned by billionaire Frederik Paulsen).
This occurred at a time when the art market paid little attention to photography, and the images could be acquired relatively cheaply.
A few years later, Elfering sold the portfolio to the American collector Leon Constantiner; in 2008, it was auctioned at Christie’s in New York.
After passing through various hands, this valuable portfolio came into the possession of Nicola Erni, who—together with her husband, the billionaire investment manager Marcel Erni—curates an art collection housed in two private museums in Zug, Switzerland.

It is one of the largest private collections in the Alpine nation and is particularly renowned for its holdings of paintings by the American artist JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT.
Through mutual acquaintances, contact was established with Matthias Harder, Director of the Helmut Newton Foundation, and a desire was expressed to exhibit the prints from this portfolio „One-Off“ in Berlin, as they had never before been shown to the public.
No sooner said than done.
Starting June 5, the series can be viewed in the Foundation’s galleries at the Museum of Photography.
The exhibition runs until November 15, 2026.
A catalogue featuring images from the portfolio is being published by Phaidon edition to accompany the exhibition.

„Rooms/Stages“
The second exhibition is itself subdivided into two sections.
One section displays oversized enlargements (presented as wall coverings) of photographs by HELMUT NEWTON, in which the spaces where he shot played an important role.
Even though viewers likely focus primarily on the naked models, Newton always carefully selected his locations to create a specific atmosphere in the images.

A second section features images by other photographers for whom the space itself constitutes the essential subject matter of their work.
I was particularly struck here by the photographs of Robert Polidori and Georges Rousse („Trompe l’oeil“).
