Ein Film für Musikliebhaber und Fans des King of Pop
Es gibt wohl keinen Musiker der Populär-Kultur, der jemals so einen Erfolg hatte, wie MICHAEL JACKSON.
Allein die Verkäufe von Vinyl-Platten und CD-Discs aus der pre-streaming Ära werden auf über 500 Millionen geschätzt.
So genau weiß das keiner, denn wieviel von denen, die in Ländern wie Indonesien, Simbabwe bis Bolivien und anderen Drittstaaten verkauft wurden, fallen in keine Statistik.
Das Album „Thriller“ ist mit 66 Millionen das meist verkaufte Album aller Zeiten.

Und er ist der Künstler mit dem meisten Alben, die von Null auf Nr. 1 in die Charts aufstieg („Bad“, „Dangerous“, HiStory“ und „Invincible“).
Und er hatte die erfolgreichste Konzertreihe, die je ein Künstler erreichte:
Sieben ausverkaufte Konzerte nacheinander im Wembley-Stadion in London 1988 mit insgesamt 504.000 Zuschauern.
Schaut man bei Wikipedia auf die Liste Von MICHAEL JACKSONS Auszeichnungen muss man eine ganze Weile runterscrollen, bis man überhaupt mal das Ende in Sicht kommt.

Der Film beginnt gleich mit einem seiner Höhepunkte:
Der Auftritt im Wembley-Stadion 1988.
Mit voller Power kommt der Song „Wanna Be Startin‘ Somethin‘“ an das Ohr und der erste Gänsehaut-Moment ist da.
Und zeigt gleichzeitig, worum es hier in den nächsten zwei Stunden hauptsächlich gehen wird: um Musik!
Dabei werden allein 13 Songs präsentiert und natürlich der wichtigste, „Thriller“, mit eingeschlossen.
Toll die Aufzeichnungen der Dreharbeiten zu dem dazugehörigen Video, damals gedreht von JOHN LANDIS, welches als Gradmesser für alle späteren Musikvideos gilt.
Der zweite Gänsehaut-Moment ist da!
Der Song „Bad“ wird am Ende des Films als Bühnenauftritt in Wembley sogar in voller Länge gezeigt.

Handlung
Die Handlung des Films beginnt 1966, als der damals 8-jährige Michael (JULIANO VALDI) zusammen mit seinen vier Brüdern Jackie, Tito, Jermaine und Marlon unter dem Namen THE JACKSON FIVE seine ersten Auftritte in kleinen Bars, Kneipen und auf Vorstadt-Bühnen hat.

Immer getrieben vom Vater Joseph (COLMAN DOMINGO), der die Kinder auch noch nachts zum Üben antreten lässt, obwohl sie eigentlich früh am nächsten Tag in die Schule müssen.

Wer nicht pariert, der bekommt es mit dem Ledergürtel des Vaters zu tun.
Mutter Kathrine (NIA LONG) schweigt dazu und senkt den Kopf.

Doch das harte Training gibt dem Vater Recht.
Bald meldet sich Suzanne de Passe (LAURA HARRIER) vom Musik-Label MOTOWN, dem damals wichtigstem Label für schwarze Musik in den USA.
Songs, wie „I‘ll be There“, „The Love You Save” und “I Want You Back” entstehen.
Ich selbst kaufte mir die Platte einige Jahre später.
Und die Aufnahmen haben großen Erfolg.
Doch MICHAEL merkt, dass er mehr drauf hat, als seine Brüder.
So beschließt er 1971 eine Solo-Aufnahme zu produzieren und die Single „Got To Be There“ entsteht.
Sie steigt bis auf Rang 4 der US-Single-Charts.
1973 erscheint das erste Solo-Album „Got to Be There“ und erreicht Platz 3 der Album-Charts.
Mit dem Song „Ben“, produziert für den gleichnamigen Film von 1972, erreicht MICHAEL JACKSON zum ersten Mal Platz 1 der Single-Charts.
Der Song wird später mit einem GOLDEN GLOBE AWARD als bester Filmsong ausgezeichnet.

In den 1970er Jahren tritt MICHAEL JACKSON (jetzt gespielt von JAFAAR JACKSON, dem Sohn von JERMAINE JACKSON) auch immer noch mit den JACKSON FIVE auf.
1977 bekommt er eine Rolle in der Verfilmung von „The Wiz“, einer Musical-Version des „Zauberers von Oz“, wo er u.a. auch neben DIANA ROSS auftritt.
Dabei lernt er QUINCY JONES kennen, einer der wichtigsten Musikproduzenten der Welt.
Dieser arbeitete mit Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles, Count Basie, Donna Summer und komponierte selbst die Filmmusik von „Die Farbe Lila“, „Kaltblütig“ und „In der Hitze der Nacht“.
Die Begegnung mit QUINCY JONES war entscheidend für die musikalische Entwicklung von MICHAEL JACKSON.
Er wechselte seinen Musikstil von R&B zu Disco und entwickelte diesen einmaligen Schlag im Takt, der sowohl wie ein Schnalzen, als auch wie ein Hammerschlag daherkommt.
Eine Taktvorgabe, die unweigerlich in die Beine geht – bei jedem, egal wie musikalisch er ist oder nicht.

In diese Zeit fällt auch die Trennung von seinem Vater und von den JACKSON FIVE, die schmerzhaft ist.

Ein weiterer schwieriger Moment im Leben von MICHAEL JACKSON wird noch kurz angerissen:
Seine Verletzung bei einem Werbespott für Pepsi-Cola (seine Haare fangen Feuer) und die darauffolgende langwierige Genesung, die nur mit vielen Schmerzmitteln bewältigt wird.
Doch dann geht es gleich weiter auf die Bühne und der nächste Song setzt an.
Kritik
So schön die Bühnendarstellungen und Musikeinlagen sind, aber nach einiger Zeit geht mir dieses Heldenepos dann doch etwas auf die Nerven.
Was für einen guten Film immer wichtig ist sind Spannungen und Brüche, die sich während einer Erzählung auftun.
Hier kommt es aber zu keinem Bruch.
Selbst die Darstellung seiner kindlichen Natur und der damit verbundenen Abschottung zu anderen Gleichaltrigen und der daraus resultierenden Einsamkeit wird nicht als echtes Problem dargestellt.

Was völlig ausgeblendet wird ist der ganze Missbrauchsskandal, der MICHAEL JACKSONS zweite Lebensphase überschattete.
Angeblich sollte das noch hineinkommen, doch der Junge, der damals gegen JACKSON aussagte, hatte in dem Vergleichsverfahren festlegen lassen, dass sein Name nie genannt werden dürfe.
Was laut Aussage der Produktionsfirma zur Vernichtung von Stunden von Drehmaterial führte.

So bleibt der Film unvollendet und das merkt man ihm an.
Auf diesem Niveau ist es nur ein gutgemachter Musikfilm, aber kein Drama, wie wir es z.B. von „Bohemian Rhapsodie“ (die Freddie Mercury Story von QUEEN) und von „Like a Complete Unknown“ (Biopic über BOB DYLAN mit TIMOTHÉE CHALAMET) kennen.
Ob es wirklich, wie angekündigt, noch einen zweiten Teil geben wird, ist eher fragwürdig, denn die ausführenden Produzenten sind überwiegend Familienmitglieder, die das Erbe von MICHAEL JACKSON sicher nicht beschädigen wollen.
Fazit: Eine leider unvollständige Biografie des größten Pop-Musikers aller Zeiten. Trotzdem für Musikfans ein Muss!

A film for music lovers and fans of the King of Pop
There is probably no other popular culture musician who has ever achieved the success of MICHAEL JACKSON.
Sales of vinyl records and CDs from the pre-streaming era alone are estimated at over 500 million.
No one knows the exact figure, because sales in countries like Indonesia, Zimbabwe, Bolivia, and other developing countries are not included in any statistics.
With 66 million copies sold in 12 months, the album „Thriller“ is the best-selling album of all time.

And he is the artist with the most albums to debut at number 1 on the charts („Bad,“ „Dangerous,“ „HiStory,“ and „Invincible“).
And he had the most successful concert run ever achieved by an artist:
Seven consecutive sold-out concerts at Wembley Stadium in London in 1988, with a total of 504,000 spectators.

The film begins with one of its highlights:
The 1988 Wembley Stadium performance.
The song „Wanna Be Startin‘ Somethin'“ hits you with full force, and the first goosebump moment arrives.
And at the same time, it shows what the next two hours will mainly be about: music!
Thirteen songs are presented, including, of course, the most important one, „Thriller.“ The footage of the filming of the accompanying video, directed by John Landis, is fantastic; it’s considered a benchmark for all subsequent music videos.

The second goosebump moment arrives!
The song „Bad“ is even shown in its entirety at the end of the film as a stage performance at Wembley.

Story
The film’s story begins in 1966, when 8-year-old Michael (JULIANO VALDI), along with his four brothers Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, and Marlon, performs their first gigs as THE JACKSON FIVE in small bars, pubs, and on suburban stages.

They are constantly driven by their father, Joseph (COLMAN DOMINGO), who makes the children practice even at night, despite having to be at school early the next day. Anyone who doesn’t obey gets a beating from their father’s leather belt.

Mother Kathrine (NIA LONG) remains silent and bows her head.
Pure patriarchy!
But the rigorous training proves the father right.
Soon, Suzanne de Passe (LAURA HARRIER) from the record label MOTOWN, then the most important label for Black music in the USA, gets in touch.

Songs like „I’ll Be There,“ „The Love You Save,“ and „I Want You Back“ are created. I bought the record myself a few years later.
And the recordings were a great success.
But Michael realized he had more talent than his brothers.
In 1971, he decided to produce a solo recording, and the single „Got to Be There“ was released.
It climbed to number 4 on the US singles chart.
In 1973, his first solo album, „Got to Be There,“ was released and reached number 3 on the album chart.
With the song „Ben,“ produced for the 1972 film of the same name, Michael Jackson reached number 1 on the singles chart for the first time.
The song was later awarded a Golden Globe for Best Original Song.

In the 1970s, Michael Jackson (now played by Jafaar Jackson, the son of Jermaine Jackson) was still performing with the Jackson Five.
In 1977, he landed a role in the film adaptation of „The Wiz,“ a musical version of „The Wizard of Oz,“ where he also appeared alongside Diana Ross.
It was there that he met Quincy Jones, one of the world’s most important music producers.
Jones worked with Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles, Count Basie, and Donna Summer, and composed the film scores for „The Color Purple,“ „In Cold Blood,“ and „In the Heat of the Night.“
Meeting Quincy Jones was pivotal for Michael Jackson’s musical development.
He shifted his musical style from R&B to disco and developed his unique rhythmic thump, which sounds both like a snap and a hammer blow.
A beat that inevitably gets everyone moving – regardless of their musicality.

This period also saw his painful separation from his father and the Jackson Five.

Another difficult moment in Michael Jackson’s life is briefly touched upon: his injury during a Pepsi-Cola commercial (his hair caught fire) and the subsequent lengthy recovery, which was only manageable with a lot of painkillers.
But then it’s straight back on stage and the next song begins.
Critics
As beautiful as the stage performances and musical numbers are, after a while this heroic epic does start to get on my nerves.

What’s always important for a good movie are the tensions and breaks that emerge during the narrative.
Here, however, there are no breaks.
Even the portrayal of his childlike nature and the associated isolation from his peers and the resulting loneliness isn’t presented as a real problem.
What’s completely ignored is the entire abuse scandal that overshadowed Michael Jackson’s second phase of life.
Supposedly, this was meant to be included, but the boy who testified against Jackson at the time stipulated in the settlement that his name could never be mentioned.
Which, according to the production company, led to the destruction of hours of footage.

Thus, the film remains unfinished, and you feel it.
At this level, it’s just a well-made musical film, but not a drama like, for example, „Bohemian Rhapsody“ (Queen’s Freddie Mercury story) or „Like a Complete Unknown“ (a Bob Dylan biopic starring Timothée Chalamet).
Whether there will actually be a sequel, as announced, is rather doubtful, since the executive producers are mostly family members who certainly don’t want to tarnish Michael Jackson’s legacy.
Conclusion: An unfortunately incomplete biography of the greatest pop musician of all time.
Nevertheless, a must-see for music fans!
