The new exhibition at the Helmut Newton Foundation in Berlin shows the master of erotic photography with fashion shots

Punctually at the end of the year there is a new exhibition that reveals new aspects within the almost inexhaustible oeuvre of the great fashion photographer HELMUT NEWTON.
This time it’s about his commissioned work for big fashion brands, who specifically wanted his special kind of erotic photography for their advertising campaigns.
And HELMUT NEWTON was of course happy to do so.
There are commissions from classic fashion houses of haute couture, such as YVES SAINT-LAURENT or CHANEL, but also campaigns for relatively unknown companies, such as the handbag company REDWALL or watches by PAUL PICOT.

My favorite is the advertising campaign for the CA‘ DEL BOSCO winery in Italy, which shows four attractive young women harvesting grapevines in beautiful black and white images (see series of pictures below)).
The photos for the Italian label BLUMARINE, whose founder and designer ANNA MOLINARI trusted in the creative work of Helmut Newton for years, have also become famous. For the campaign, HELMUT NEWTON photographed the well known model MONICA BELLUCCI and the then very young NADJA AUERMANN (see photo series below).
I find the collaboration with the Austrian underwear company WOLFORD very interesting, which lasted for several years. This series of shots are not only sexy, it also has that special erotic tension that has always characterized HELMUT NEWTON’s pictures. In Newton’s work, when two women face each other and look at each other, you never quite know what this means. Is there an erotic attraction here or rather an aggressive tension? Both are possible (see picture series below).

This is also the case with the photos for the ceramics manufacturer VILLEROY & BOCH with the blonde model ANDI, whom I even know from my student days in Munich (see picture series below).

Mention should also be made of the nude model as Illustrator in the studio of Italian automobile designer Giorgio Giugiaro, who drew the first GOLF for VW in 1974. This car was the beginning of a new era for Volkswagen, which ultimately meant the rise to become the largest car manufacturer in the world. This recording also has historical value (see picture series below).

Carla Bruni Sarkozy

Finally, an amusing discovery in a glass case is the cover of an October 1992 issue of Britain’s THE SUN, showing model CARLA BRUNI (now Madame Sarkozy, wife of former French President Nicolas Sarkozy) in a provocative pose, photographed by HELMUT NEWTON. The article was about an alleged affair with rock musician MICK JAGGER, which probably actually happened… I photographed Carla Bruni in 1984 as a very young model for MÄDCHEN magazine in Paris. At that time, however, no one knew how well known the young lady would become…
