Von einem Aerobic Film zu einem Splatter-Horror-Trip
Ich bin normalerweise kein Fan von Horror-Filmen, auch wenn es in meinem Leben immer wieder vorkam, einen im Kino gesehen zu haben.
Speziell in der Jugend, als ich Lust auf den einen oder anderen Kick hatte.
So kann ich mich noch an „Carrie“ von BRIAN DE PALMA aus dem Jahr 1976 erinnern, bei der das Mädchen Carrie (SISSY SPACEK) eine ganze Schulversammlung niederbrennt, als ihr auf der Bühne ein Eimer voller Blut übergegossen wird.
Spätere Grusel-Filme, wie „The Texas Chainsaw Massacre“ von TOBE HOOPER von 1986 oder „The Blair Witch Project“ von Daniel Myrick aus dem Jahr 1999 waren dann schon nicht mehr mein Ding.
Nur wenn sie mit viel Humor gefüllt sind, wie bei „Sleepy Hollow“ von TIM BURTON mit JOHNNY DEPP von 1999 bin ich wieder dabei.

Jetzt zu Halloween am 31. Oktober werden sicher viele Horror-Filme im Kino und Fernsehen gezeigt.
„THE SUBSTANCE“ passt dazu perfekt.
Handlung
Die berühmte Schauspielerin und Oscar-Preisträgerin Elisabeth Sparkle (DEMI MOORE *1962) ist in ihrer späten Karriere zu einer Vorturnerin für Aerobic-Übungen in einer Fernsehshow abgestiegen. Durch Zufall hört sie mit, wie der Produzent der Show, Harvey (DENNIS QUAID) – wohl eine Anspielung auf HARVEY WEINSTEIN – sie wegen ihres Alters feuern will. Kurz darauf kommt es dann wirklich dazu, in einer für sie sehr verletzenden Art. Harvey bezeichnet sie dabei zu alt und verwelkt und noch bösere Worte fallen.
Die Szene wird zu einer durchgeknallten Farce.

Bei einem Arztbesuch, bei dem Elisabeth Sparkle ihre Frustration und Verletztheit nicht mehr zurückhalten kann, steckt ihr ein Assistenzarzt eine Nummer zu, die sie anrufen möge, wenn sie ihrem Leben wieder neuen Lebensmut bekommen möchte. Sie könne durch ein bestimmtes Verfahren ein verbessertes, bzw. verjüngtes Ich erhalten.
Nach anfänglichem Zögern ruft sie dort an, wird zu einem geheimen Ort geführt und erhält ein Päckchen. Kaum geöffnet stellt sie fest, dass es sich um eine mysteriöse Substance handelt, die sie sich spritzen muss. Nach einigen Minuten spaltet sich ihr Körper auf und eine zweite Person, ähnlich wie sie aber 30 Jahre jünger, entsteigt ihrem Körper. Doch beide Personen können nur existieren, wenn sie sich in einem Rhythmus von 14 Tagen in ihrem Dasein abwechseln, ausgelöst durch einen Austausch des Blutes. Denn beide sind immer noch eins und keiner kann ohne den anderen existieren.
Das Experiment scheint zu funktionieren.
Sue, so nennt sich die zweite Elisabeth, bewirbt sich für die Nachfolge von Elisabeth in der Aerobic-Show und wird genommen. Ihre Karriere als Fernsehstar nimmt große Formen an und auch hübschen Jungs sagst sie nicht nein. Blöd nur, dass sie nach zwei Wochen immer wieder für 14 Tage verschwinden muss.
Eines Tages beginnt sie den Switch zwischen Sue und Elisabeth immer weiter hinauszuzögern, was aber fatale Folgen für Elisabeth hat. Diese altert plötzlich schneller. Und auch an Sue geht das falsche Spiel nicht folgenlos vorbei. Als Sue das Angebot bekommt, die große Silvestershow am Ende des Jahres zu moderieren, sagt sie zu. Doch dazu muss sie 3 Wochen am Stück proben.
Mitten am Silvesterabend kommt es dann zur Katastrophe.

Kritik
Wie schon zu Anfang gesagt bin ich eigentlich kein großer Freund von Horror-Filmen. Doch ich hatte viel Gutes über den Film gehört und gelesen. Der Film lief beim Filmfestival in Cannes im Wettbewerb und Regisseurin CORALIE FARGEAT erhielt dafür den Preis für das beste Drehbuch.

Außerdem bin ich ein besonderer Fan der Schauspielerin MARGARET QUALLEY (*1994), die ich schon in mehreren Filmen, wie „Mein Jahr in New York“ (lief auf der Berlinale 2020) und natürlich in QUENTIN TARANTINOS „Once upon in Hollywood“ bewundern durfte. Im letzteren spielt sie die quirlige Anhalterin, die von BRAD PITT im Auto mitgenommen wird und die ihn verführen möchte.

MARGARET QUALLEY ist übrigens die Tochter der Schauspielerin ANDIE MACDOWELL, die Ihr sicher noch aus „Vier Hochzeiten und ein Todesfall“ (1994) kennt.

Der Film fängt ja auch sehr „normal“ an und die Szenen mit der jungen Sue bei den Tanzeinlagen sind natürlich eine Augenweide.
MARGARET QUALLEY ist einfach super-süß.
Doch so länger der Film geht, um so schauriger werden die Szenen mit diesen beiden Körpern, die sich schließlich bis zur Unkenntlichkeit verändern.
Bei meinem Kinobesuch verließen etliche Zuschauer das Kino.
Mit dieser Entwicklung zum Endes des Films hatte wohl keiner gerechnet.
Fazit: Nichts für zarte Gemüter. Aber toll gemacht und spannend bis zur letzten Sekunde.
Am Schluss wird alles von einem städtischen Müllwagen aufgewischt…

From an aerobics film to a splatter horror trip
I’m not normally a fan of horror films, even though I’ve seen one in the cinema several times in my life. Especially when I was young, when I wanted a kick or two. I can still remember „Carrie“ by BRIAN DE PALMA from 1976, in which the girl Carrie (SISSY SPACEK) burns down an entire school assembly when a bucket of blood is poured over her on stage.
Later horror movies, such as „The Texas Chainsaw Massacre“ by TOBE HOOPER from 1986 or „The Blair Witch Project“ by Daniel Myrick from 1999 were no longer my thing.
I only watch them if they are filled with a sense of humor, like „Sleepy Hollow“ by TIM BURTON with JOHNNY DEPP from 1999.

Now for Halloween on October 31st, many horror fmovies will be shown in cinemas and on television.
„THE SUBSTANCE“ fits in perfectly.
Story
The famous actress and Oscar winner Elisabeth Sparkle (DEMI MOORE *1962) has been relegated to being an aerobics instructor on a television show in her late career.
By chance she overhears how the producer of the show, Harvey (DENNIS QUAID) – probably an allusion to HARVEY WEINSTEIN – wants to fire her because of her age.
Shortly afterwards, it actually happens, in a way that is very hurtful to her. Harvey calls her too old and withered and even more nasty words are thrown at her.
The scene turns into a crazy farce.

During a doctor’s visit, where Elisabeth Sparkle can no longer contain her frustration and hurt, an assistant doctor gives her a number that she can call if she wants to regain her courage to live. She can achieve an improved or rejuvenated self through a certain procedure.
After initial hesitation, she calls the number, is led to a secret location and receives a package.
As soon as she opens it, she realises that it is a mysterious substance that she has to inject. After a few minutes, her body splits and a second person, similar to her but 30 years younger, emerges from her body. But both people can only exist if they alternate in their existence every 14 days, triggered by an exchange of blood. Because both are still one and neither can exist without the other.
The experiment seems to work.
Sue, as the second Elisabeth calls herself, applies to be Elisabeth’s successor in the aerobics show and is accepted. Her career as a TV star takes off and she doesn’t say no to pretty boys either. The only problem is that after two weeks she always has to disappear for 14 days.
One day she starts to delay the switch between Sue and Elisabeth, but this has fatal consequences for Elisabeth. She suddenly ages faster and faster. And the wrong game does not go unnoticed for Sue either. When Sue is offered the opportunity to host the big New Year’s Eve show at the end of the year, she says yes. But she has to rehearse for three weeks straight.
Then, in the middle of New Year’s Eve, disaster strikes.

Critics
As I said at the beginning, I’m not really a big fan of horror movies.
But I had heard and read a lot of good things about this one.
The movie was in competition at the Cannes Film Festival and director CORALIE FARGEAT received the award for best screenplay.

I’m also a particular fan of the actress MARGARET QUALLEY (*1994), whom I’ve had the pleasure of admiring in several movies, such as „My Year in New York“ (which ran at the Berlinale Filmfestival 2020) and of course in QUENTIN TARANTINO’S „Once upon in Hollywood“.
In the last one, she plays the lively hitchhiker who is given a ride by BRAD PITT in his car and who wants to seduce him.

MARGARET QUALLEY is, by the way, the daughter of the actress ANDIE MACDOWELL, who you probably know from the movie „Four Weddings and a Funeral“ (1994).

The film also starts very „normally“ and the scenes with the young Sue during the dance routines are of course a feast for the eyes.
MARGARET QUALLEY is just super-sweet.
But the longer the film goes on, the more gruesome the scenes become with these two bodies, which ultimately change beyond recognition.
When I went to the cinema, a number of viewers left the cinema.
Nobody expected this development at the end of the film.
Conclusion: Not for the faint-hearted. But well done and exciting until the last second.
At the end, everything is cleaned up by a municipal garbage truck…
