Die Machtstrukturen der amerikanischen Politik in einem gut gemachten Hollywood Streifen.
Das erste, was einem beim Blick auf das Poster des Films auffällt, ist der Hauptdarsteller selbst: Das soll Schauspieler Christian Bale („Batman Begins“) sein?
Ähnlich wie bereits in dem anderen Wettbewerbsfilm „Der Goldene Handschuh“ von Fatih Akin leisteten die Make-Up Artisten Erstaunliches.

Der Film „Vice“ erzählt die Geschichte des Politikers Dick Cheney vom Anfang seiner Zeit an der Universität Yale bis zum Ende seiner Amtszeit als Vizepräsident der Vereinigten Staaten. Dabei wird deutlich welche Macht ein US-Präsident und seine Administration hat. Und wie sie die gesamte Weltpolitik beeinflussen kann.
Und, mit welchem gnadenlosen Egoismus die Machthabenden in den USA ihre eigenen, meist finanziellen, Interessen verfolgen.
Dick Cheney kommt in die Politik, als er einfacher (parteiloser) Angestellter im Abgeordnetenhaus wird. Dort nimmt ihn Donald Rumsfeld unter seine Fittiche. Dieser sollte später einmal Verteidigungsminister von George W. Bush während des Irakkrieges werden.
Donald Rumsfeld nimmt Dick Cheney als seinen persönlichen Laufburschen und bringt ihm alle Tricks und Lügen bei, die Notwendig sind, um im dreckigen Politikgeschäft in Washington bestehen zu können.

Auf die Frage von Cheney, woran er, Rumsfeld, eigentlich glaube, antwortet dieser nur mit einem Lachanfall.
Wie schnell es aber auch bergab gehen kann, erfährt Dick Cheney, als Gerald Ford, US-Präsident von 1974 – 76, nicht mehr wiedergewählt wird. Cheney war sein Stabschef im Weißen Haus.
Nun ist Dick Cheney gezwungen sich selbst als Abgeordneter in seinem Heimatstaat Wyoming zur Wahl zu stellen. Als er mit einem Herzanfall ausfällt, übernimmt seine Frau Lynne die Wahlkampfauftritte, welche sie so gut meistert, dass er wirklich gewählt wird. Viele munkeln, dass er selbst es wohl nicht geschafft hätte.

Der 1976 nach Gerald Ford gewählte Demokrat Jimmy Carter ist alles andere, als seine Vorgänger. Er ist der erste Präsident, der schon in den 70er Jahren Solarzellen auf dem weißen Haus anbringen ließ und viele Umweltgesetze auf den Weg brachte.
Im Jahre 1980 wird der Hollywood Schauspieler und republikanische Abgeordnete Ronald Reagan zum Präsidenten der Vereinigten Staaten gewählt wird. Ähnlich wie später bei der Amtsübergabe von Bill Clinton an George W. Bush oder Barack Obama an Donald Trump, lassen die Republikaner alles wieder rückgängig machen, was ihre Amtsvorgänger mühsam an Friedens- und Umweltpolitik erreicht hatten.
Nach Ronald Reagan kommt 1988 George Bush Senior an die Macht und wählt Dick Cheney 1989 zu seinem Verteidigungsminister. In diese Amtszeit fällt auch der 1. Irakkrieg (Golfkrieg).
Nachdem der Demokrat Bill Clinton 1992 US-Präsident wird geht Dick Cheney in die Privatwirtschaft und wird CEO bei der Firma Halliburton. Durch seine Kontakte zum Militär und seine politischen Drähte schafft er es, dass Halliburton in der Zukunft fast alle wichtigen Militäraufträge von der Regierung bekommt.
Im Jahre 2000 wird Bush Sohn George W. US-Präsident und wählt Dick Cheney zu seinem Vizepräsidenten. Cheneys Bedingung: Er darf die Verteidigungs- und Außenpolitik des Landes bestimmen. George W. Bush willigt ein – er hat davon sowieso keine Ahnung…
Als nach den Anschlägen auf das World Trade Center 2001 der Krieg gegen Afghanistan und den Irak ausgerufen wird, zieht im Hintergrund Dick Cheney die Fäden. Der Angriff auf den Irak, welcher damals nur auf falschen Behauptungen der Militärs beruhte, wurde wohl erst durch die Machtspiele von Dick Cheney möglich. Und damit sind alle weiteren Katastrophen, wie der anschließende Bürgerkrieg im Irak und der daraus resultierende Gottesstaat IS erst möglich geworden. Unnötig zu erwähnen, dass die Firma Halliburton Milliardengewinne aus dem Irak Krieg ziehen konnte…
Regisseur Adam McKay (Oscar für seinen früheren Film „The Big Short“) zeigt fast schon biografisch den Lebensweg von Dick Cheney. Ähnlich wie Michael Moore in seinen Dokumentarfilmen kommentiert er aus dem Off oder durch Texte auf der Leinwand das Geschehen im Film, bzw. gibt zusätzliche Hintergrundinformationen. Durch plötzliche Schnitte und abrupte Szenen – und Zeitenwechsel wird die Geschichte spannend aufbereitet.
Und Christian Bale in der Rolle des stets leise auftretenden, aber mit List und Tücke agierenden Politikers Dick Cheney ist wirklich grandios. Unspektakulär, aber großartig. Einen Golden Globe und einen Critics Choice Award für diese Rolle hat er schon und für den Oscar ist er nominiert. Tolle schauspielerische Leistungen auch von Amy Adams als Cheneys Frau Lynne und Steve Carrell als Donald Rumsfeld.
Fazit: Unbedingt ansehen! Der Film kommt am 21. Februar in unsere Kinos.

The power structures of American politics in a well-made Hollywood Blockbuster.
The first thing that strikes you when you look at the poster of the film is the lead actor himself: That’s supposed to be actor Christian Bale („Batman Begins“)?
Similar to the other competition film „The Golden Glove“ by Fatih Akin, the make-up artists performed amazing things.
The film „Vice“ tells the story of politician Dick Cheney from the beginning of his time at Yale University to the end of his tenure as Vice President of the United States. It becomes clear which power a US president and his administration have. And how it can influence the entire world politics.
Dick Cheney enters politics as he becomes a (non-party) employee in the House of Representatives. There, Donald Rumsfeld takes him under his wing. Rumsfeld was later to become Defense Secretary of George W. Bush during the Iraq war. Donald Rumsfeld takes Dick Cheney as his personal errand boy and teaches him all the tricks and lies necessary to survive in the dirty politics business in Washington.
When once Cheney asks Rumsfeld what is his mission, he answers with a laugh.
How fast it can go downhill, learns Dick Cheney, as Gerald Ford, US President from 1974 – 76, is not re-elected. Cheney was his Chief of Staff in the White House.
Now, Dick Cheney is forced to vote for himself as a legislator in his home state of Wyoming. When he fails with a heart attack, his wife Lynne takes over the campaign appearances, which she masters so well that he is really chosen. Many people say he did not make it himself.
Democrat Jimmy Carter, who was elected after Gerald Ford in 1976, is anything but his predecessors. He is the first president to install solar cells on the White House back in the 1970s and set many environmental concerns in motion.
In 1980, the Hollywood actor and Republican Rep. Ronald Reagan is elected President of the United States. Similar to the transfer of Bill Clinton to George W. Bush or Barack Obama to Donald Trump, the Republicans cancel everything that their predecessors had painstakingly achieved in peace and environmental policy.
After Ronald Reagan, George Bush Senior comes to power in 1988 and elects Dick Cheney to his defense minister in 1989. In this term also falls the 1st Iraq War (Gulf War). After Democrat Bill Clinton becomes US President in 1992, Dick Cheney joins the private sector and becomes CEO of Halliburton. Through his contacts with the military and his political wires, he manages to ensure that Halliburton will receive almost all important military orders from the government in the future.
In 2000, Bush becomes the son of George W. US President and elects Dick Cheney as his vice president. Cheney’s condition: he may determine the defense and foreign policy of the country. George W. Bush agrees – he has no idea anyway … As after the attacks on the World Trade Center in 2001, the war against Afghanistan and Iraq is proclaimed, draws in the background Dick Cheney the strings. The attack on Iraq, which at that time was based only on false claims of the military, was probably only possible through the power games of Dick Cheney. And so all other catastrophes, such as the subsequent civil war in Iraq and the resulting Islamic state IS became possible. Needless to say, the Halliburton company was able to wage billions in profits from Iraq …
Director Adam McKay (Oscar for his earlier film „The Big Short“) shows almost biographically the life of Dick Cheney. Similar to Michael Moore in his documentary films, he comments on the action in the film from off screen or through texts on the screen, or provides additional background information. Sudden cuts and abrupt scenes and times change the story excitingly.
And Christian Bale in the role of the always quiet, but tricky and acting politician Dick Cheney is really terrific. Unspectacular, but great. He already has a Golden Globe and a Critics Choice Award for this role and he is nominated for the Oscar. Great acting performances also by Amy Adams as Cheney’s wife Lynne and Steve Carrell as Donald Rumsfeld.
Conclusion: must see! The movie will be released on cinemas in Germany on February 21st.
