Ein weiteres Biopic über einen ehemaligen Star der internationalen Musikszene
Halb-biografische, halb-fiktionale Filme über berühmte Musiker sind immer spannend und garantieren große Aufmerksamkeit.

Der für mich beste Musikerfilm ist bisher „Bohemian Rhapsody“ aus dem Jahre 2018 über FREDDY MERCURY, den Liedsänger der Rock-Gruppe QUEEN, mit dem genialen RAMI MALEK (Oscar-Gewinner 2019) in der Hauptrolle.
Aber MARISA ABELA als AMY WINEHOUSE ist ebenfalls herausragend.
Vor allem, dass sie mit ihrer eigenen Stimme die berühmten Songs selber singt.
Und das macht sie ganz hervorragend!
Dabei ist die britische Schauspielerin, Jahrgang 1996, noch völlig unbekannt und hat in England bisher nur Fernsehserien gedreht.
Ich war gestern Abend in der Vorstellung mit der Original Version in Englisch.
Das ist zwar toll, dieses eigenwillige Cockney-English zu hören, nur wer daran nicht gewohnt ist, versteht nur die Hälfte bis gar nichts.
Ihr müsst Euch vorstellen, Ihr fahrt nach Oberbayern und sprecht mit einem Alpenbauern. Dann wisst Ihr ungefähr, was ich meine.
Deshalb würde ich Euch raten, doch die Version mit der deutschen Übersetzung zu wählen, um gerade die Auseinandersetzungen, die AMY mit ihrem Freund BLAKE hat, bis ins Detail zu verstehen. Denn diese toxische Beziehung ist neben der Musik der wichtigste Punkt in diesem Film – und dann auch verantwortlich für den unaufhaltsamen emotionalen Niedergang der Sängerin AMY WINHOUSE.
Die Songs werden übrigens auch in der deutschen Version original mit MARISA ABELAS Stimme gebracht.
Also keine Angst, das Musikalische geht hier nicht verloren.
Handlung
Der Film beginnt mit AMY WINHOUSE im Teenager Alter.
Man sieht sie zwischen den beiden Wohnungen ihrer geschiedenen Eltern hin- und herpendeln, sowie bei ihrer geliebten Großmutter oder mit Freunden in Pubs abhängen und bei religiösen Feiern in ihrer jüdischen Gemeinschaft, bei denen viel gelacht und gesungen wird. Hier sieht man auch, welch enge Verbindung jüdische Menschen untereinander haben. Wir Christen dagegen scheinen uns immer selbst zu bekämpfen…

AMYS Musikgeschmack geht dabei früh in eine ganz bestimmte Richtung, die geprägt ist von der Liebe zum Jazz durch ihren Vater Mitch und den Songs, den ihre Generation hört. Pop-Songs allerdings, wie von den SPICE GIRLS, verabscheut sie.
AMY WINHOUSE‘ noch junges Leben besteht überwiegend darin, nette Jungs zu verführen und Songs zu schreiben, die sie selbst singt und sich dabei mit ihrer Gitarre begleitet.
Sie sieht sexy aus (dabei ist die Schauspielerin MARIS ABELA deutlich hübscher, als es die echte AMY WINEHOUSE war) und ist sehr selbstbewusst. Liebespartner wechseln bei ihr so häufig, wie man das sonst nur von Männern kennt. Deren Namen weiß sie am nächsten Tag meist nicht mehr.
Mittlerweile tritt sie mit ihren selbstgeschriebenen Songs mehr und mehr in kleinen Clubs im Stadtteil Camden (nördlich des Regent’s Park) auf, wo es viele kleine Musikbühnen gibt. Dort entdeckt sie ein Musikproduzent, der ihr einen Plattenvertrag ermöglicht.
Ziemlich genau in dieser Zeit lernt sie in einem Pub den Filmassistenten Blake (Jake O’Connell) kennen, in den sie sich sofort unsterblich verliebt.
Tatsächlich werden sie ein Paar.
Doch AMY WINEHOUSE ist dermaßen einnehmend und beherrschend gegenüber ihrem Umfeld und auch gegenüber ihrem Boyfriend, dass der sich, nachdem sie ihn eines Abends bei einem Streit schlägt, von ihr trennt.
Genau in dieser Zeit entsteht AMYS vielleicht berühmtestes Album „Back to Black“, auf dem sie die emotionale Berg- und Talfahrt der Beziehung zu ihrem Freund Blake Fielder verarbeitet.

Schließlich kommt es doch noch zu einer Heirat mit Blake. Eines Tages aber wird dieser wegen Drogenbesitzes verhaftet. Im Gefängnis reflektiert er seine Beziehung zu seiner Frau und beschließt die Scheidung einzureichen.
AMY WINEHOUSE ist am Boden zerstört und begießt ihren Kummer mit Unmengen von Alkohol.
Als sie eines Tages erfährt, dass Ihr Ex ein Kind von einer anderen Frau erwartet, was sie sich selber immer gewünscht hat, wird sie wenige Tage später tot in ihrem Haus gefunden – mit 4,5 % Alkohol im Blut.
Schon 3,5 % sind tödlich…
Kritik
Wie oben bereits erwähnt steht und fällt der Film mit der Hauptdarstellerin MARISA ABELA, die ihre Arbeit ganz wunderbar meistert und auch dieses überaus emotionale Wesen von AMY WINEHOUSER zwischen Wut und Aggression sowie Sanftheit und Charme sehr überzeugend spielt.
AMYS Freund und Ehemann BLAKE, gespielt von JACK O’CONNELL, ist ein Loser und erinnert sehr an Babyshambles Sänger PETER DOHERTY, der mit Supermodel KATE MOSS eine ähnlich toxische Beziehung gehabt haben soll.
Die Charaktere sind gut herausgespielt, die Atmosphäre dieser Underground-Musikwelt in der Alternativszene in London ist überzeugend dargestellt und die Musikaufnahmen sind toll.
Die Regisseurin SAM TAYLOR-JOHNSON (*1967, geb. Taylor-Wood) ist eigentlich Bildende Künstlerin und Fotografin. Vor 20 Jahren hat sie sich dem Medium Video und Film zugewandt. Im Jahre 2009 drehte sie eine Filmbiografie über die Jugendjahre von JOHN LENNON. Dabei verliebte sie sich in den 23 Jahre jüngeren Hauptdarsteller AARON JOHNSON. Beide heirateten 2012.

Fazit: Kein großartiger, aber ein sehr guter Film, der diese wunderbaren Songs von AMY WINHOUSE wieder lebendig werden lässt.
PS. Was mir leider den Kinoabend gestern komplett vermiest hat, war diese ständige Popcorn-Fresserei um mich herum im Kinosaal. Mittlerweile kann ich verstehen, dass viele lieber zu Hause ihre Filme im Stream anschauen und dafür einen 65 Zoll große Bildschirme kaufen…

Another biopic about a former star of the international music scene
Semi-biographical, semi-fictional movies about famous musicians are always exciting and guarantee a lot of attention.

The best film about a musician for me is so far “Bohemian Rhapsody” from 2018 about FREDDY MERCURY, the singer of the rock group QUEEN, with the brilliant RAMI MALEK (Oscar winner 2019) in the leading role.
But MARISA ABELA as AMY WINEHOUSE is also outstanding.
Above all, she sings the famous songs with her own voice. And she does it brilliantly!
I was in the screening last night with the original version in English.
It’s great to hear this special Cockney English, but if you’re not used to it, you’ll only understand half of it or nothing at all.
You have to imagine that you are going to Upper Bavaria and talking to an Alpine farmer. Then you know roughly what I mean.
That’s why I would advise you (if you are German) to choose the version with the German translation in order to understand the arguments that AMY has with her boyfriend BLAKE in detail.
Because this toxic relationship is, along with the music, the most important point in this movie – and is also responsible for the unstoppable emotional decline of singer AMY WINHOUSE.
By the way, the songs are also originally performed in the German version with MARISA ABELA’s voice. So don’t worry, the musical element isn’t lost here.
Story
The movie begins with AMY WINHOUSE in her teens.
She can be seen shuttling between her divorced parents‘ two homes, staying with her beloved grandmother, hanging out with friends in pubs, and attending religious celebrations in her Jewish community where is a lot of laughter and singing. Here you can also see how close the connections between Jewish people are. We Christians, on the other hand, always seem to be fighting against each other…

AMY’s musical taste goes in a very specific direction early on, which is influenced by her father Mitch’s love of jazz and the songs her generation listens to. However, she detests pop songs, like those by the SPICE GIRLS.
AMY WINHOUSE’s young life mainly consists of seducing nice boys and writing songs that she sings herself and accompanies with her guitar. She looks sexy (although the actress MARIS ABELA is much prettier than the real AMY WINEHOUSE was) and is very self-confident. Her sex partners change as frequently as is otherwise only the case with men. She usually doesn’t know their names the next day.
She is now performing more and more of her self-written songs in small clubs in the Camden district (north of Regent’s Park in London), where are many small music stages. There she is discovered by a music producer who helped her get a record deal.
It was almost exactly at this time that she met the good looking guy Blake (JAKE O’CONNELL) in a pub, with whom she immediately fell in love.
In fact, they become a couple.
But AMY WINEHOUSE is so engaging and controlling of those around her and also of her boyfriend that after she hits him in an argument one evening, he breaks up with her.
It was precisely at this time that AMY’s most famous album, “Back to Black,” was created, on which she processed the emotional ups and downs of her relationship with her boyfriend Blake Fielder.

Finally AMY and BLAKE get married.
But one day he is arrested for drug possession. In prison he reflects on his relationship with his wife and decides to demand the divorce.
AMY WINEHOUSE is devastated and and tries to drown her sorrows in alcohol. When she found out one day that her ex was expecting a child with another woman, something she had always wanted, she is found dead in her house a few days later – with 4.5% alcohol in her blood.
Just 3.5% are fatal…
Critics
As I already mentioned above, the movie stands or falls with the leading actress MARISA ABELA, who masters her work wonderfully and also plays this extremely emotional character of AMY WINEHOUSER very convincingly, between anger and aggression as well as gentleness and charm.
AMY’s boyfriend and husband Blake, played by JACK O’CONNELL, is a loser and reminds me of Babyshambles singer PETER DOHERTY, who is said to have had a similar toxic relationship with supermodel KATE MOSS.
The characters are well played, the atmosphere of this underground music world in the alternative scene in London is convincingly portrayed and the music recordings are great.
Director SAM TAYLOR-JOHNSON (*1967, née Taylor-Wood) is actually a visual artist and photographer.
20 years ago she turned to the medium of video and film. In 2009 she made a film biography about JOHN LENNON’s youth. She fell in love with the leading actor AARON JOHNSON, who was 23 years her junior.
Both married in 2012. Three years later, SAM TAYLOR-JOHNSON filmed the novel “Fifty Shades of Gray”.
Conclusion: Not a great, but a very good movie that brings these wonderful songs by AMY WINHOUSE to life again
P.S. Unfortunately, what completely ruined my evening at the cinema yesterday night was the constant eating of popcorn around me in the cinema. I can now understand that many people prefer to watch their films streamed at home and buy a 65 inch screen…
