Der Oscar-nominierte Cillian Murphy in einer ganz neuen Rolle

Die Eröffnung der 74. Internationalen Filmfestspiele von Berlin am 15. Februar 2024 war wie immer glamourös und elegant mit vielen deutschen Stars und zwei Hollywood-Größen: CILLIAN MURPHY und MATT DAMON.
MATT DAMON war als Produzent des Eröffnungsfilms „Small Things Like These“ gekommen.
Schon im letzten Jahr war MATT DAMON auf der Berlinale.
Und ebenfalls als Produzent eines Films: „Kiss the Future“ von Nenad CiCin-Sain, einem Film über die Belagerung der Stadt Sarajewo im Yugoslawien-Krieg der 90er Jahre. Vielleicht sehen wir MATT DAMON ja auch eines Tages wieder als Schauspieler auf dem Roten Teppich in Berlin.

CILLIAN MURPHY ist in Hollywood zum Superstar aufgestiegen, als er im letzten Jahr die Rolle des Atomphysikers ROBERT OPPENHEIMER in dem Film „Oppenheimer“ übernahm, der mit 13 Oscar-Nominierungen der große Favorit bei den nächsten Academy Awards am 12. März sein wird.
Er ist als bester Hauptdarsteller nominiert, zusammen mit BRADLEY COOPER („Maestro“), COLMAN DOMINGO („Rustin“), PAUL GIAMATTI („The Holdovers“) und JEFFREY WRIGHT („American Fiction“).
Auf dem Roten Teppich machte am Eröffnungsabend eine Gruppe von 50 Schauspielerinnen und Schauspielern auf sich aufmerksam, die „Kampf für die Demokratie“ skandierten. Noch vor einem Jahr waren an gleicher Stelle die Klima-Kleber aktiv.

„Small Things Like These“
Dieser leise und doch sehr intensive Film geht auf den Roman von CLAIRE KEEGAN zurück, den sie 2022 veröffentlichte. Darin schreibt sie teils dokumentarisch, teils fiktional über die berüchtigten katholischen Magdalenen-Institute, in denen von 1820 bis 1996 in Irland sogenannte „gefallene“ Frauen (meist allein stehende Schwangere, deren Babys nach der Geburt zwangsweise zur Adaption freigegeben wurden) misshandelt und erniedrigt wurden.
Der Roman, wie auch der Film, erzählt die Geschichte von dem einfachen Kohlenhändler Bill Furlong, gespielt von CILLIAN MURPHY, der mit seiner Frau Eileen (EILEEN WALSH) und seinen fünf Töchtern in bescheidenen Verhältnissen in dem kleinen irischen Ort New Ross lebt.
Eines Tages beobachtet er beim Ausfahren seiner Kohlesäcke, wie ein Mädchen gegen seinen Willen in das örtliche Magdalenen-Kloster abgegeben wird.
Als er wenige Tage später einen Sack Kohle in dieses Kloster ausliefert, findet er im abgeschlossenen Kohlenkeller die völlig entkräftete, verschmutzte und gedemütigte Sarah (Zara Davlin).
Bill bringt das Mädchen zurück ins Haupthaus, wo ihn die leitende Schwester Mary beruhigt, es hätte sich nur um einen Streich der anderen Mädchen gehandelt.
Bei einem Vier-Augen-Gespräch aber redet Schwester Mary eindringlich auf Bill ein sich nicht um die Angelegenheit des Klosters zu kümmern.
Außerdem droht sie ihm, notfalls seine fünf Töchter von der angrenzenden Schule zu verweisen. Zum Schluss bekommt er auch noch einen Bündel Geld, welches angeblich als Weihnachtsgeschenk dienen soll.
Erinnerungen an seine Kindheit kehren zurück. Auch seine Mutter war ungewollt schwanger geworden, doch sehr liebevoll von einer alten Dame aufgenommen. Selbst als seine Mutter unerwartet starb durfte Bill bei der alten Frau bleiben und dort aufwachsen.
Und seinen Mutter hieß ebenfalls Sarah…
Bill kehrt gesenkten Hauptes nach Hause zurück, wohl wissend, dass er sich hat bestechen lassen.
Alle Dorfbewohner drücken beide Augen zu vor den Missständen, die im Koster herrschen. Auch die Pub-Besitzerin warnt Bill sich einzumischen.
Irland gehörte und gehört bis heute zu den Ländern, wo der Katholizismus noch am strengsten praktiziert wird. Die Kirche ist in Irland überall präsent. Zweifel oder Widerspruch sind nicht erwünscht. Dies hat auch eine politische Funktion, um sich vor den protestantischen Engländern abzusetzen.
Als Bill eines Tages jedoch wieder die unglückselige Sarah eingeschlossen im Kohlenkeller findet, nimmt er sie mit zu sich nach Hause, vor den Augen der Dorfbewohner.
Wer den irischen Schauspieler CILLIAN MURPHY nur aus Action-Streifen wie „Batman – The Dark Knight“, „Dünnkirchen“ oder „Oppenheimer“ kennt, wird sich über seine Wandlungsfähigkeit wundern. In den meisten Streifen spielt er den Bösewicht, hier aber den guten Samariter. Und das absolut glaubwürdig.
Und EMILY WATON (Oscar-Nominierung für” Breaking The Waves”, 1996) bekam später bei der Preisverleihung der Berlinale einen Silbernen Bären für ihr intensives Spiel der Schwester Mary.
Mir hat „Small Things like These” leidlich gut gefallen. Die Schauspieler sind toll, allen voran CILLIAN MURPHY, aber auf die Dauer wird der Film etwas langatmig und ermüdend.
Fazit: Gut, aber mit Einschränkungen. Note 3+

The opening of the 74th Berlin International Film Festival on February 15, 2024 was, as always, glamorous and elegant with many German stars and two Hollywood greats: CILLIAN MURPHY and MATT DAMON.
MATT DAMON came on as producer of the opening film “Small Things Like These”.
MATT DAMON was at the Berlinale last year. And also as a producer of a film: “Kiss the Future” by Nenad CiCin-Sain, a film about the siege of the city of Sarajevo during the Yugoslavian war in the 1990s.
Maybe one day we’ll see MATT DAMON again as an actor on the red carpet in Berlin.

CILLIAN MURPHY rose to superstardom in Hollywood when he took on the role of nuclear physicist ROBERT OPPENHEIMER in last year’s movie „Oppenheimer,“ which, with 13 Oscar nominations, will be the big favorite at the next Academy Awards on March 12.
He is nominated for Best Actor along with BRADLEY COOPER (“Maestro”), COLMAN DOMINGO (“Rustin”), PAUL GIAMATTI (“The Holdovers”) and JEFFREY WRIGHT (“American Fiction”).
On the red carpet on the opening night, a group of 50 actors and actresses who chanted “Fight for Democracy” drew attention. Just a year ago, the climate adhesives were active in the same place.
“Small Things Like These”
This quiet yet very intense film is based on the novel by CLAIRE KEEGAN, which she published in 2022.
In it she writes partly documentary, partly fictionally about the notorious Catholic Magdalen Institutes, in which so-called “fallen” women (mostly single pregnant women whose babies were forcibly released for adoption after birth) were mistreated and humiliated in Ireland from 1820 to 1996.
The novel, like the movie, tells the story of the simple coal dealer Bill Furlong, played by CILLIAN MURPHY, who lives with his wife Eileen (EILEEN WALSH) and his five daughters in modest circumstances in the small Irish town of New Ross.

One day, while delivering his coal sacks, he observes how a girl is being given to the local Magdalen monastery against her will.
When he delivers a sack of coal to this monastery a few days later, he finds the completely exhausted, dirty and humiliated Sarah (ZARA DEVLIN) in the locked coal cellar.
Bill takes the girl back to the main house, where the senior nurse Mary (EMILY WATSON) reassures him that it was just a prank by the other girls.
During a one-on-one conversation, however, Sister Mary urges Bill not to worry about the monastery’s affairs.
She also threatens to expel his five daughters from the neighboring school if necessary. At the end he also receives a wad of money, which is supposed to be a Christmas present.
Memories of his childhood return.
His mother had also become pregnant unintentionally, but was taken in very lovingly by an old lady. Even when his mother died unexpectedly, Bill was allowed to stay with the old woman and grow up there.
And his mother’s name was also Sarah…
Bill returns home with his head bowed, knowing full well that he was bribed.
All the villagers turn a blind eye to the grievances that prevail in Koster.
The pub owner also warns Bill not to get involved.
Ireland was and is still one of the countries where Catholicism is still practiced most strictly. The Church is present everywhere in Ireland. Doubts or contradictions are not welcome. This also has a political function to distance themselves from the Protestant English.
However, when Bill finds the unfortunate Sarah once again locked in the coal cellar one day, he takes her home with him in front of the villagers.
Anyone who only knows Irish actor CILLIAN MURPHY from action movies such as “Batman – The Dark Knight”, “Dünnkirchen” or “Oppenheimer” will be amazed at his versatility. In most movies he plays the villain, but here he plays the good Samaritan. And it’s absolutely believable.
And EMILY WATON (Oscar nominee for “Breaking The Waves,” 1996) later received a Silver Bear at the Berlinale awards ceremony for her intense performance as Sister Mary.
I quite liked “Small Things like These”. The actors are great, especially CILLIAN MURPHY, but after a while the movie becomes a bit long-winded and tiring.
Conclusion: Good, but with limitations. Grade 3+
