Das Coachella Music and Art Festival geht an diesem Wochenende in Palm Springs in der kalifornischen Wüste in seine zweite Runde. Fast alle Musiker des ersten Wochenendes performen heute und morgen ein zweites Mal. Dabei ist der Auftritt des R&B Künstlers THE WEEKND nicht nur wegen seiner Musik ein Highlight des Festivals. Auch sein Bühnendesign ist bemerkenswert. Die britische Designerin Es Devlin hatte dazu eine 9 Meter hohe afro-futuristische Maske gebaut, die von verschiedenen Projektionen angeleuchtet wird.

Der kanadische Sänger THE WEEKND, dessen richtiger Name Abel Tesfaye ist, hatte zusammen mit SZA, Khalid and James Blake den Soundtrack des Films „THE BLACK PANTHER“ eingespielt. Für seinen Bühnenauftritt beim Coachella Festival bat Abel Tesfaye die Designerin Es Devlin, ob sie eine Bühne in dem Stil des Films kreieren könnte.
Das Set Design des Films „THE BLACK PANTHER“ nimmt Bezug auf eine künstlerische Bewegung, die AFROFUTURISME genannt wird. Sie verbindet afrikanische Kultur und Identität mit Technologie und Science Fiction.
Die Designerin Es Devlin hatte die Idee eine Maske zu modulieren, die dem Gesicht des Sängers nachgebildet ist. Ähnliches hatte sie bereits für die Welt Tournee von BEYONCÉ gemacht.
THE WEEKND performte Songs aus seinem neuen Album „My dear melancholy“ (Veröffentlichung am 30.03.2018), wobei es nicht wirklich ein Album ist, sondern mit nur 6 Tracks eine so genannte „EP“ (Extended Play). Zusätzlich sang er„Pray for Me“ aus dem Film „Black Panther“.

Neben den tollen Musikern gab es beim Coachella Festival auch außergewöhnliche Kunst. Besonders vier große Skulpturen/Plastiken werden in Erinnerung bleiben:
– Die aus drei Teilen bestehende 21 Meter hohe „Etherna“ Kathedrale des italienischen Künstlers Edouardo Tresoldi.
– Der 12 Meter hohe Stern „SUPERNOVA“ des argentinischen Architektenpaares Roberto Behar und Rosario Marquardt.
– Die „PALM 3 WORLD STATION“ von Simon Vega aus El Salvador zeigt aus weggeworfenem Müll die ehemalige sowjetische Raumsonde „Mir“.
– Die 7 Stockwerke hohe Konstruktion „SPEKTRA“ des britischen Design Studios Newsubstance. Es besteht aus einem runden Gebäude, in der eine spiralförmige Treppe nach oben führt. Ein grandioser Rundblick auf das Gelände ist garantiert.
Das Festival endet am Sonntag, den 22. April 2018, um Mitternacht.

The Coachella Music and Art Festival is entering its second round this weekend in Palm Springs, California. Almost all musicians of the first weekend will perform a second time today and tomorrow. The appearance of the R & B artist THE WEEKND is not only a highlight of the festival because of its music. His stage design is also remarkable. The British designer Es Devlin had built a 9-meter-high afro-futuristic mask, which is illuminated by various projections.
The Canadian singer THE WEEKND, whose real name is Abel Tesfaye, recorded the soundtrack of the movie „THE BLACK PANTHER“ together with SZA, Khalid and James Blake. For his stage performance at the Coachella Festival, Abel Tesfaye asked designer Es Devlin if she could create a stage in the style of the film.
The set design of the movie „THE BLACK PANTHER“ refers to an artistic movement called AFROFUTURISME. It combines African culture and identity with technology and science fiction.
The designer Es Devlin had the idea to modulate a mask, which is modeled after the face of the singer, an „Alter Ego“ art work. She had already done similar things for the world tour of BEYONCÉ.
THE WEEKND performed songs from his new album „My dear melancholy“ (released 30/03/2018), which is not really an album, but with only 6 tracks a so-called „EP“ (Extended Play). In addition, he sang „Pray for Me“ from the movie „Black Panther“.
In addition to the great musicians, there was also extraordinary art at the Coachella Festival. Especially four large sculptures/ installations will be remembered:
– The 21-meter ETHERNA cathedral by the Italian artist Edouardo Tresoldi.
– The 12 meter high star, called „SUPERNOVA“, by the Argentine architect couple Roberto Behar and Rosario Marquardt.
– The „PALM 3 WORLD STATION“ by Simon Vega from El Salvador shows the former Soviet space lab „Mir“ out of discarded garbage.
– The 7-floor construction „SPEKTRA“ by the British design studio Newsubstance. It consists of a circular building in which a spiral staircase leads upwards. A magnificent panoramic view of the terrain is guaranteed.
The festival will end on Sunday, April 22, 2018, at midnight.
