Ein Action Blockbuster, eine sozialkritische Komödie aus den USA und eine Dokumentation über den Maler Paul Cezanne, sowie eine Doku über unsere Erde, sind die Empfehlungen dieser Woche.
TOMB RAIDER – Action, Abenteuer – USA – 2018

Als 1996 das Videospiel „TOMB RAIDER“ auf den Markt kam wurde es ein großer Erfolg. Die Art und Weise des Spiels war nicht anders als bei anderen. Jede Menge Action und viele Abenteuer, die bestanden werden müssen. Doch das Besondere: Die Heldin war eine Frau, und was für eine – supersexy, riesige Brüste mit einem Kampfstil à la Bruce Lee und einer Faust wie Arnold Schwarzenegger. Was will man mehr? Natürlich schreit so ein Erfolg nach Verfilmung und prompt kam mit Angelina Jolie 2002 auch die richtige Schauspielerin für diese Rolle. Nach einem Sequel 2003 war erst einmal Schluss, bis 2013 eine Neuauflage des Videospiels einen ähnlichen Erfolg versprach wie in den 90er Jahren. Und auch jetzt musste eine Verfilmung folgen.
Doch vieles ist anders geworden. Die neue Lara Croft ist nun keine Sexbombe mehr, sondern eine normale, eher schmächtige junge Frau, die ihren Lebensunterhalt als Fahrradkurier in London verdient. Ihr vermögender Vater ist vor 7 Jahren spurlos verschwunden und das Erbschaftsgericht kann die Gelder ihres Vaters nur ausschütten, wenn die Tochter ihn für tot erklärt. Doch Lara Croft weigert sich, denn sie ist davon überzeugt, dass ihr Vater noch lebt. Also macht sie sich eines Tages auf die Suche und landet auf einer japanischen Insel zusammen mit einer Menge fieser Typen. Ab hier sind wir natürlich ganz in der Actionwelt einer Tomb Raider Geschichte. Das dabei die Story etwas hinkt, die Show überwiegend übertriebene Animationsbilder zeigt und alles etwas unwahrscheinlich wirkt, kennt man aus anderen Filmen dieses Genres. Toll aber bleibt die Hauptdarstellerin Alicia Vikander (*1988), ohne die der Film keine Empfehlung wäre. Die Oscarpreisträgerin (2016 für „The Danish Girl“) ist immer eine Freude anzusehen und die Wandlung vom schüchternen Mädchen und zur tapferen Frau macht Spaß. Privat ist Alicia Vikander übrigens seit 2017 verheiratet mit dem irischen Schauspieler Michael Fassbender.

„THE FLORIDA PROJECT“ – Drama, Komödie – USA – 2017

Etwas abseits vom großen Mainstream kam im letzten Jahr ein Film in die US-amerikanischen Kinos, der als ein kleines Juwel bezeichnet wird. Keine Superstars, kein riesiges Budget, keine Megastory. Sondern das (keineswegs leise) Portrait eines 6-jährigen Mädchens, welches in bescheidenen Verhältnissen mit ihrer allein stehenden Mutter in einem schäbigen Motel in Florida wohnt; das Zimmer für 38 Dollar am Tag. Während Mutter Halley jeden Tag versucht das Geld für die Miete aufzutreiben und irgendwie das Leben zu meistern, macht die kleine Moonee mit ihren Freundinnen einen Blödsinn nach dem anderen und lebt das Leben eines fröhlichen Kindes. Dass sie und ihre Nachbarskinder in bitterer Armut leben merkt sie nicht. Denn in dem Alter haben Kinder noch kein Gespür für die Unterschiede innerhalb der Gesellschaft. Hauptsache sie werden von ihren Eltern geliebt. Und Mutter Halley tut alles für ihre süße Tochter und ist immer für sie da. Skepisch, aber gleichzeitig auch mit einem wohlwollenden Auge, werden beide vom Hotelmanager Bobby (Willem Dafoe) beobachtet. Der Film zeigt eine ganz andere Facette des amerikanischen Lebens, fernab von jedem Glamour und hohen Wolkenkratzern. Es ist aber auch keine explizite Studie über Armut in den USA, sondern nur ein Sommer im Leben von Halley und ihrer Tochter Moonee – wunderbar!

„CEZANNE – POTRAITS EINES LEBENS“ – Dokumentation – GB – 2018

Dass Paul Cézanne (*1839 – †1906) einer der ganz großen Künstler des 19. Jahrhunderts war, braucht man wohl niemandem mehr zu erzählen. Viele spätere Maler bezogen sich nach eigener Aussage auf ihn, Henri Matisse, Georges Braque, André Derain und sogar Pablo Picasso. Cézanne gilt als der Wegbereiter des Impressionismus. Während er noch zu Beginn sehr realistisch im Stil der Romantik malte, so wandte er sich in der zweiten Lebenshälfte mehr und mehr der Auflösung des Bildes in Farben und Formen zu. Große Bedeutung wird seinen Selbstbildnissen gegeben, wovon heute noch ca. 200 existieren.
Ein Film für Freunde der Kunst.

„UNSERE ERDE 2“ – Dokumentation – GB, China – 2017

Eigentlich sollte man denken, dass dank GEO und National Geographic der Zuschauer schon alles über unsere Erde gesehen hätte. Weit gefehlt! Die Erde ist so vielfältig und gleichzeitig so artenreich und außergewöhnlich, dass kein Film zu diesem Thema umsonst wäre. In diesem Film folgt der Autor mit seiner Kamera dem Lauf der Sonne von Kontinent zu Kontinent innerhalb 24 Stunden. Und findet dabei die ungewöhnlichsten Tiere in noch nie gesehenen Situationen, eingefangen in wunderschönen Bildern – sehenswert!

An action blockbuster, a socially critical comedy from the USA and a documentary about the painter Paul Cezanne, as well as a documentary about our earth, are the recommendations of this week.
TOMB RAIDER – Action, Adventure – USA – 2018

When the video game „Tomb Raider“ hit the market in 1996, it was a great success. Lots of action and many adventures to be passed were no different to other games. But the special: The heroine was a woman – super sexy, huge breasts with a fighting style à la Bruce Lee and a fist like Arnold Schwarzenegger. What more do you want? Of course, such a success screams for a movie and promptly came with Angelina Jolie the right actress for this role. After a sequel 2003, the fans had to wait until 2013, a re-boost of the video game promised a similar success as in the 90s. And now a movie had to follow.
But many things have changed. The new Lara Croft is now no longer a bombshell, but a normal, rather slender young woman who earns her living as a bicycle messenger in London. Her wealthy father disappeared without a trace seven years ago and the court of inheritance can only pay out her father’s money if the daughter declares him dead. But she refuses, because she is convinced that her father is still alive. So one day she sets out to search and lands on a Japanese island with lots of nasty guys. And of course we’re in the action world of a Tomb Raider story from here. The fact that the story is a bit limp, the movie shows mostly strange animated pictures and everything looks a bit unreal, you know from other films of this genre. But the main actress Alicia Vikander (* 1988) is great, without whom the film would not be a recommendation. The Oscar winner (2016 for „The Danish Girl“) is always a pleasure to watch and the transformation from a shy girl to a brave woman is fun. Incidentally, Alicia Vikander has been privately married to Irish actor Michael Fassbender since 2017. For the whole family.

Away from the mainstream, last year a movie was released in the US, called a small gem. No superstars, no huge budget, no mega-story. But the (not quiet) portrait of a 6-year-old girl who lives in modest circumstances with her single mother in a seedy motel in Florida, the room for $ 38 a day. As mother Halley tries to raise some money every day and somehow master life, the little Moonee and her girlfriends make nonsense all time and live the life of happy children. She does not feel that she and her neighbors live in abject poverty. Because at that age children have no sense of the differences within society. The main thing is that they are loved by their parents. And Mother Halley does everything for her sweet daughter and is always there for her. They are watched by hotel manager Bobby Willem Dafoe, with a both skeptics and a benevolent eye . The film shows a very different facet of American life, far away from any glamor and tall skyscrapers. But it’s not an explicit study of poverty in the US, just a summer in the life of Halley and her daughter Moonee – wonderful!

Nobody needs to tell you that Paul Cezanne (* 1839 – † 1906) was one of the greatest artists of the 19th century. Many painters referred to him, Henri Matisse, Georges Braque, Andre Derain and even Pablo Picasso. Cezanne is considered as the pioneer of impressionism. While he painted very realistically in the style of Romanticism at the beginning, he turned in the second half of his life more and more to the dissolution of a picture into colors and forms. Great importance is given to his self-portraits, of which about 200 works still exist today.
A film for friends of art and light-flooded landscapes.

Our Earth is so diverse and at the same time so species-rich and extraordinary that no film on this subject would be waistless. Here is the theme of a day in the life of the earth. The author follows the course of the sun 24 hours from continent to continent with his camera. And he finds the most unusual animals, unprecedented situations, captured in beautiful pictures – worth seeing!
