Die neuen Filme im Kino: EMILIA PEREZ

Ein Film über korrupte Anwälte, mächtige Drogenbosse und starke Frauen im mörderischen Mexiko der heutigen Zeit – als Musical
(Der Film „Emilia Perez“ erhielt am 7. Dez. 2024 bei den 37. European Film Awards fünf Auszeichnungen, darunter vier Hauptpreise: Bester Film, Beste Regie, Bestes Drehbuch, Beste Hauptdarstellerin, Bester Schnitt, Anm. d. Red.)
Nach den Filmen „The Substance“, „Megalopolis“ und „Anora“ ist „Emilia Perez“ schon der vierte Spielfilm, der auf dem diesjährigen Filmfestival in Cannes gezeigt wurde und der jetzt bei uns in die Kinos kommt.
Über die drei anderen habe ich bereits berichtet:
„Megalopolis“ ist ein Flop, „Anora“ ganz nett und „The Substance“ toll.
Und „Emilia Perez“, der Gewinner des Jury-Preises von Cannes 2024?

Handlung
Die Anwältin Rita (ZOE SALDANA) arbeitet in Mexiko-Stadt in einer Kanzlei, deren Chef dafür bekannt ist, dass er böse Buben vor dem Gefängnis bewahrt, indem er mit schmierigen Argumenten die Jury betört.
Auch wenn Rita eigentlich am liebsten die Kanzlei verlassen würde, bleibt sie dennoch, weil Farbige in Mexiko wenig Chancen haben einen Job zu finden.
Eines Tages wird sie mitten auf der Straße überfallen und in ein Auto gezerrt, so wie es in Mexiko jeden Tag passiert. Auf diese Weise verschwinden jedes Jahr Tausende von Menschen.
Doch sie wird zu einem Mann gebracht, der sie nicht ermorden will, sondern ihre Hilfe benötigt: Manitas Del Monte (KARLA SOFIA GASCON) ist einer der mächtigsten Drogenbosse Mexikos, hat aber einen ungewöhnlichen Wunsch: Er will eine Frau werden.
Rita kontaktiert also die besten Schönheitschirurgen der Welt und wird in Israel fündig.
Nachdem alles eingefädelt ist, bekommt sie für ihre Dienste 2 Millionen Dollar.
Manitas aber wird für Tod erklärt, seine Frau und seine Kinder flüchten in die Schweiz.
Vier Jahre später ist Rita in London auf einem Business-Dinner mit Geschäftsleuten. Zwei Stühle weiter sitzt eine Frau, die sie ständig anschaut.
Es ist Manitas, der sich jetzt EMILIA PEREZ nennt. Und er/sie will die Dienste von Rita noch einmal in Anspruch nehmen.
Manitas/ Emilia möchte seine/ ihre Kinder wieder bei sich haben.
Mittels der Tarnung Emilias als angebliche Cousine von Manitas gelingt der Coup und Manitas ehemalige Ehefrau Jessica (SELENA GOMEZ) und seine zwei Kinder ziehen bei ihm in sein neues (und bescheideneres) Haus in Mexiko ein, ohne zu ahnen, wer er wirklich ist.
Alles geht gut, bis seine Ehefrau sich in einen neuen Mann verliebt und diesen heiraten will.
Das hieße aber auch, dass Jessica mit ihren Kindern aus dem Haus von Manitas/ Emilia ausziehen und zu ihrem neuen Ehemann gehen würde.
Als Manitas/ Emilia das auf keinen Fall zulassen will, eskaliert die Situation zu einer Katastrophe.
Kritik
Ich hatte schon lange keinen solchen Spaß mehr im Kino.
Der französische Regisseur JACQUES AUDIARD (*1952) hat wieder ein Meisterstück abgeliefert und hätte für diesen Film sicher eher die Goldene Palme in Cannes verdient, als der Film „Anora“ (kultur24 berichtete).
Aber AUDIARD hatte in Cannes schon drei Preise gewonnen:
1996 das beste Drehbuch für den Film „Das Leben: eine Lüge“,
2009 der Große Preis der Jury für „Ein Prophet“ (+ Oscar-Nominierung),
2015 die Goldene Palme für „Dämonen und Wucher“.

Da wollte man wohl die Goldene Palme auch mal jemandem anderen überlassen.
Immerhin gab es für „Emilia Perez“ den Preis der Jury und – den Preis für die beste Hauptdarstellerin/ innen für gleich vier Schauspielerinnen:
ZOE SALDANA, SELENA GOMEZ, KARLA SOFIA GASCON und ADRIANA PAZ. Letztere spielt als Epifania Flores die Geliebte von Manitas/ Emilia im zweiten Teil des Films.

Warum hier alle vier prämiert wurden erschließt sich mir nicht ganz.
Sie spielen zwar alle recht gut, aber wirklich toll ist vor allem ZOE SALDANA als Anwältin Rita.
Ihre Präsenz und ihre Ausstrahlung ist herausragend. Sie überstrahlt den ganzen Film. Auf Spanisch.

ZOE SALDANA ist 1978 in New Jersey geboren, zog aber bereits mit 9 Jahren in das Heimatland der Mutter, der Dominikanische Republik, als der Vater bei einem Verkehrsunfall ums Leben kam.
Nach der Schulzeit ging ZOE zurück nach New York und machte ihre ersten Schritte als Schauspielerin in einer Theaterkompanie.
Nach kleineren Rollen in TV-Serien wie „Law & Order“ oder Nebenrollen in „Fluch der Karibik“ und „Terminal“ wurde sie 2009 die Uhara in „Star Trek“ und kurz darauf die Figur Neytiri in James Camerons „Avatar“.

Ein besonderes Schmankerl in dem Film „Emilia Perez“ scheint die Beteiligung von Pop-Sängerin SELENA GOMEZ (*1992) zu sein, auch wenn sie nur eine Nebenrolle spielt.
Sie war als TV-Star durch diverse Disney-Kinderproduktionen („Hannah Montana“) bekannt geworden und fing von dort an, wie schon einst Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears und Justin Timberlake, eine Karriere als Pop-Sängerin zu starten.
Berühmt wurde SELENA GOMEZ auch durch ihe große Zahl an Followern auf Instagram (423 Millionen).
Da müssen sich selbst Superstars, wie TAYLOR SWIFT (283 Millionen) mit deutlich weniger bescheiden.
Durch ihren mexikanischen Vater spricht sie auch perfekt spanisch.
SELENA GOMEZ überzeugt als zunächst hilflose Ehefrau in einem bösen Rollenspiel, wird aber zum Schluss deutlich selbstbewusster und beginnt ihre Interessen rigoros durchzusetzen.

Wäre noch die Darstellerin des Manitas/ Emilia zu erwähnen.
Und dies ist schon eine besondere Erwähnung wert.
Es handelt sich dabei um die spanische Transgender Schauspielerin KARLA SOFIA GASCON (*1972).
Sie/ Er arbeitete viele Jahre erfolgreich als Film-und Fernsehschauspieler CARLOS GASCON in Spanien und Mexiko.
CARLOS/ KARLA ist sogar Vater einer Tochter.

Mitte der 2010er Jahre unterzog sich CARLOS GASCON einer Geschlechtsumwandlung und nannte sich fortan KARLA SOFIA GASCON.
Für ihren Einsatz für die Rechte der Transsexuellen erhielt sie den Rainbow-Award der spanischen Regierung.
Ihre Darstellung am Anfang des Films als Drogenboss Manitas ist aber eher steif und wenig überzeugend.

Als weibliche Emilia Perez dagegen sieht sie toll aus und spielt glaubwürdig die Rolle der Frau mit großer Liebe zu den eigenen Kindern und immer noch großer Zuneigung für die frühere Ehefrau. Was dann auch zur Katastrophe führt.
Musical
Die Idee eines Gangster-Films im mexikanischen Drogenmilieu als Musical zu realisieren ist schon gewagt.
Doch ein richtiges Film-Musical, wie zum Beispiel „La La Land“ von 2016, ist es nicht.
Die Gesangs- und Tanzeinlagen kommen eher selten und sehr sporadisch in dem Film vor.
Dabei singen die Darsteller alle selber.
ZOE SALDANA macht das hervorragend, SELENA GOMEZ kommt sowieso aus dem Gesangsfach und auch KARLA SOFIAS GASCON macht die Sache gut.
Ganz schlimm ist der israelische Schönheitschirurg, doch das macht nichts.
Es wird so akzeptiert, wie man das Singen bei einer Familienfeier akzeptiert, wobei die meisten auch nicht singen können.
Dabei ist aber die Qualität des Gesangs nicht wichtig, sondern das Singen an sich.
Fazit: Ein wirklich wunderbarer Film. Spannend und lustig, dramatisch und auch heiter. Jeder, von jung zu alt, wird seine Freude daran haben.

A film about corrupt lawyers, powerful drug lords and strong women in today’s murderous Mexico – as a musical
(The film “Emilia Perez” received five awards at the 37th European Film Awards on December 7, 2024, including four main prizes: Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actress, Best Editing, editor’s note.)
After the movies „The Substance“, „Megalopolis“ and „Anora“ – „Emilia Perez“ is already the fourth feature film to be shown at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and is now coming to cinemas in Germany.
I have already reported on the other three:
„Megalopolis“ is a flop, „Anora“ is quite nice and „The Substance“ is great.
And „Emilia Perez“, the winner of the Cannes Jury Prize?

Story
Lawyer Rita (ZOE SALDANA) works in a law firm in Mexico City whose boss is known for keeping bad guys out of prison by using sleazy arguments to charm the jury.
Even though Rita would really like to leave the firm, she stays anyway because black people have little chance of finding jobs in Mexico.
One day she is attacked in the middle of the day and dragged into a car, as happens every day in Mexico.
Thousands of people disappear in this way every year.
But she is taken to a man who doesn’t want to murder her, but needs her help:
Manitas Del Monte (KARLA SOFIA GASCON) is one of the most powerful drug lords in Mexico, but has an unusual wish:
He wants to become a woman!
So Rita contacts the best plastic surgeons in the world and finds what she is looking for in Israel.
After everything is arranged, she receives $2 million for her services.
Manitas becomes EMILIA PEREZ and has his old self declared dead, while his wife and children flee to Switzerland.
Four years later, Rita is in London at a business dinner with business people.
Two chairs away sits a woman who keeps looking at her.
It is Manitas/Emilia Perez. And he/she wants to use Rita’s services again.
Because Manitas/Emilia wants his/her children back with him.
By disguising Emilia as Manitas‘ alleged cousin, the coup succeeds and Manitas‘ former wife Jessica (SELENA GOMEZ) and his two children move into his new (and more modest) house in Mexico, without suspecting who he/she really is.
Everything goes well until his former wife falls in love with a new man and wants to marry him.
But that would also mean that Jessica and the children would have to move out of Manitas/Emilia’s house and move in with her new husband.
When Manitas/Emilia refuses to allow this, the situation escalates.
Critics
I haven’t had this much fun at the cinema for a long time.
The French director JACQUES AUDIARD (*1952) has once again delivered a masterpiece and would certainly have deserved the Golden Palm in Cannes for this film more than the film „Anora“ (kultur24 reported).
But AUDIARD had already won three awards in Cannes:
in 1996 the best screenplay for the film „Life: a lie“,
in 2009 the Grand Jury Prize for „A Prophet“ (+ Oscar nomination) and in 2015 the Golden Palm for „Demons and Usury“.

So they probably wanted to give the Golden Palm to someone else.
After all, „Emilia Perez“ won the Jury Prize and – the award for best actress/actresses for four actresses:
ZOE SALDANA, SELENA GOMEZ, KARLA SOFIA GASCON and ADRIANA PAZ. The latter plays Epifania Flores, Manitas/Emilia’s lover in the second part of the film.
I don’t really understand why all four of them were awarded prizes.

They all act quite well, but ZOE SALDANA is particularly great as lawyer Rita.
Her presence and charisma are simply outstanding. She outshines the whole film. And she does it in Spanish.

ZOE SALDANA was born in New Jersey in 1978, but moved to her mother’s home country, the Dominican Republic, at the age of 9 when her father died in a traffic accident.
After school, ZOE returned to New York and took her first steps as an actress in a theater company.
After smaller roles in TV series such as „Law & Order“ and supporting roles in „Pirates of the Caribbean“ and „Terminal,“ she became Uhara in „Star Trek“ in 2009 and shortly afterwards the character Neytiri in James Cameron’s „Avatar.“

A special treat in the movie „Emilia Perez“ seems to be the participation of pop singer SELENA GOMEZ (*1992), even if she only has a supporting role.
She became known as a TV star through various Disney children’s productions („Hannah Montana“) and from there, like Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake before her, started a career as a pop singer.

SELENA GOMEZ also became famous through her large number of followers on Instagram (423 million).
Even superstars like TAYLOR SWIFT (283 million) have to settle for significantly less.
Thanks to her Mexican father, she speaks perfectly Spanish.
SELENA GOMEZ is convincing as the initially helpless wife in an evil role play, but becomes much more self-confident towards the end and begins to rigorously assert her interests. With fatal consequences.
Manitas/ Emilia
The actress who plays Manitas/Emilia should also be mentioned.
And this is worth a special mention.
It is the matter of the Spanish transgender actress KARLA SOFIA GASCON (*1972).
She/He worked successfully for many years as film and television actor CARLOS GASCON in Spain and Mexico.
CARLOS/KARLA is even the father of a daughter.

In the mid-2010s, CARLOS GASCON underwent a sex change and from then on called himself KARLA SOFIA GASCON.
She received the Rainbow Award from the Spanish government for her commitment to the rights of transsexuals.
Her portrayal of drug lord Manitas at the beginning of the movie is rather stiff and unconvincing. But as Emilia Perez she looks great and credibly plays the role of the woman with great love for her own children and still great affection for her former wife.
Which then leads to disaster.

Musical
The idea of turning a gangster film set in the Mexican drug scene into a musical is a bold one.
But it is not a real film musical, like “La La Land” from 2016, for example.
The singing and dancing interludes are rare and very sporadic in the film.
The actors all sing themselves.
ZOE SALDANA does it brilliantly, SELENA GOMEZ has a singing background anyway and KARLA SOFIA GASCON does a good job too.
The Israeli plastic surgeon is really bad, but that doesn’t matter.
It is accepted in the same way as singing is accepted during a family celebration, where most people can’t sing either.
The quality of the singing is not so important, but the singing itself.
Conclusion: A really wonderful movie. Exciting and funny, dramatic and also cheerful.
Everyone, from young to old, will enjoy it.
