Die neue Ausstellung in der Helmut Newton Stiftung in Berlin zeigt die Privatsammlung der ehemaligen Chefredakteurin der italienischen Vogue, Carla Sozzani.
In schöner Regelmäßigkeit werden alle 6 Monate neue Ausstellungen in den eindrucksvollen Räumen der Helmut Newton Stiftung am Berliner Bahnhof Zoo gezeigt. Immer geht es um den 2004 verstorbenen Maître de la Photographie, Helmut Newton, sein Wirken und sein Werk.
Hatten wir letztes Jahr noch Newtons Arbeiten neben den Bildern des heute wohl bekanntesten Modefotografen Mario Testino (kultur24 berichtete) und danach die seines Kollegen aus den 70er- und 80er Jahren, Guy Bourdin (kultur24 berichtete), kommt jetzt die langjährige Freundschaft mit der ehemaligen Chefredakteurin der italienischen VOGUE, Carla Sozzani, zum Tragen. Nicht nur, dass sie Helmut Newton häufig für ihre Magazine buchte, sie war auch eine der ersten, die ihn in ihrer Galerie in Mailand zeigte.
Carla Sozzani war aber nicht nur Modejournalistin, sondern begann auch frühzeitig Photographie zu sammeln. Auf über 1000 Werke wird mittlerweile Ihre Kollektion geschätzt. Mit Arbeiten von 200 Photographen. Sie zeigte sie entweder in ihrer 1990 eröffneten Galerie oder in dem 1991 eröffneten weltweit ersten Concept Store, 10 Corso Como, in Mailand. Die immer als Mutter aller Concept Stores bezeichnete Boutique COLETTE in Paris kam erst sechs Jahre später.

Ein ebenfalls enger Freund von Carla Sozzani, Azzedine Alia (verstarb überraschend Ende 2017, kultur24 berichtete), war nicht nur ein berühmter Modedesigner, sondern ebenfalls Galerist und stellte in seinem Pariser Atelier (18, rue de la Verrerie, Paris 4ieme) regelmäßig Künstler aus. Der französische Kurator Fabrice Hergott hatte die Idee, die Sammlung von Carla Sozzani bei Azzedine Alais auszustellen. Und so entstand „Entre l’ Art et la Mode“ ( 11.11 2016 – 26.2.2017), die später noch in einem Museum in der Schweiz gezeigt wurde.
Matthias Harder, Kurator der Helmut Newton Stiftung, kam auf die Idee, diese Ausstellung nach Berlin zu holen. Und nun ist sie hier bei uns zu sehen.

Vervollständigt wird die Ausstellung „Between Art & Fashion“ noch von weiteren teilweise großformatigen Arbeiten der Modefotografen Sarah Moon und Paolo Roversi und speziell für diesen Zweck ausgesuchten Bildern von Helmut Newton. In einem Nebenraum werden Portrait Photographien, aufgenommen von seiner Frau June Newton alias Alice Springs, gezeigt.

The new exhibition at the Helmut Newton Foundation in Berlin shows the private collection of the former editor-in-chief of Italian Vogue, Carla Sozzani.
Every six months, new exhibitions are regularly shown in the impressive rooms of the Helmut Newton Foundation at Berlin’s Bahnhof Zoo. It is always about the Maître de la Photographie, Helmut Newton, who died in 2004, his work and his influence. Last year we had Newton’s work alongside the pictures of today’s most famous fashion photographer Mario Testino (kultur24 reported) and then those of his colleague from the 70s and 80s, Guy Bourdin, and now the pictures of the collection of the longstanding friend and former editor-in-chief of the Italian VOGUE, Carla Sozzani. Not only did she frequently book Helmut Newton for her magazines, she was also one of the first to show him at her gallery in Milan.
Carla Sozzani was not only a fashion journalist, but also began to collect photography at an early stage. Her collection is now valued at more than 1000 works. With pictures by 200 photographers. She showed them either in her gallery Galeria Carla Sozzani opened in 1990 or in the world’s first concept store, 10 Corso Como, founded by Carla Sozzani 1991. The COLETTE boutique in Paris, described as the mother of all concept stores, only came six years later.
A close friend of Carla Sozzani, Azzedine Alaia (who died unexpectedly in late 2017, kultur24 reported), was not only a famous fashion designer, but also a gallerist and exhibited regularly artists in his Paris studio (18, rue de la Verrerie, Paris 4ieme) , The French curator Fabrice Hergott had the idea to exhibit the collection of Carla Sozzani at Azzedine Alaia’s Atelier. And so was born the exhibition „Entre l ‚Art et la Mode“ (11.11.2016 – 26.2.2017), which was later shown in a museum in Switzerland. Matthias Harder, curator of the Helmut Newton Foundation, came up with the idea to bring this exhibition to Berlin. And now she is here to see.
The exhibition „Between Art & Fashion“ is complemented by other partially large-format works by the fashion photographers Sarah Moon and Paolo Roversi and specially selected images by Helmut Newton for this purpose. In an adjoining room, portrait photographs by his wife June Newton aka Alice Springs are also exhibited.
