Glanz und Glamour der 80er Jahre in „Hollywood Royal“
Ausstellung vom 21.10. – 02.12.2017
Die renommierte Fotogalerie Camera Work schafft es bei fast jeder Ausstellung uns immer wieder mit tollen Arbeiten zu faszinieren. Schwerpunkt bilden seit jeher berühmte Fotografen aus dem Glamour- und Modebereich. Sei es Peter Lindbergh, Paolo Roversi, Patrick Demarchelier oder wie kürzlich auch der Schweizer Hans Feurer, fast immer geht es um schöne Frauen und schöne Männer. Doch Modefotografie ist nicht gleich Modefotografie. Angefangen von belanglosen Katalogfotos über die Ablichtung von Kleidung auf nicht weiter identifizierbaren Fotomodellen bis zu den Hochglanzfotos von Vogue, Harpers-Bazaar, L’Officiel und Co. mit den angesagtesten Supermodels der Szene. Gerade erst hatten wir eine Ausstellung über das 30-jährige Berufsjubiläum von Claudia Schiffer in der Camera Work Partnergalerie, der CWC Gallery in der Aguststrasse in Berlin-Mitte. Zum Abschluss der Ausstellung war Madame Schiffer dann sogar selbst gekommen (siehe dazu unser Video von vergangener Woche).
Bei Matthew Rolston ist das etwas anderes. Als Modefotograf kann man ihn eigentlich nicht bezeichnen, mehr als Portraitfotograf. Wobei die Grenzen da durchaus verschwimmen. Denn auch die Modefotografien von Peter Lindbergh sind ebenfalls mehr ausdrucksstarke Portraits als Darstellung der neusten Kollektion von Comme de Garcon.
Der in Kalifornien geborene Matthew Rolston wurde von Andy Warhol in den 70er Jahren in New York entdeckt und machte ihn zu einem Fotografen seines berühmten INTERVIEW Magazins. Später ging Rolston zum ROLLING STONE Magazin und fotografierte an die Hundert Titelbilder für das Musikmagazin. In den 80er Jahren kamen Aufträge von Modemagazinen hinzu. Als Mitte der 80er Jahren durch Sender wie MTV die Musikvideos boomten, begann Rolston sich auch erfolgreich dem Film zuzuwenden. Er drehte über 200 Musikvideos, so z.B. für Michael Jacksons Video „Bad“ (1987), für David Bowie „Miracle Goodnight“ (1993), Mary J. Blige „I’m Going Down“ (1995), Christina Aguilera „Candyman“ (2007) bis zu Miley Cyrus „“The Climb“ (2009).
Für die „Hollwood Royal“ Serie aus den 80er Jahren ließ sich Matthew Rolston von den Glamour Fotos aus den 40er und 50er Jahren von Hollywood inspiriren. Rita Hayworth, Greta Garbo, Lauren Bacall hießen damals die Hollywod Schönheiten, immer in Schwarz-Weiß und ausgeleuchtet mit einem dramatischen Schattenspiel. So entstanden bei Rolston ebenfalls wunderschöne Fotografien von Cybill Shepherd (1986), Christy Turlington (1987), Lisa Bonet („Angel Heart“) (1987), Robert Downey Jr. (1985), Kelly LeBrook (1985) und Isabella Rossellini (1988).
Wer die Ausstellung noch sehen will muss sich sputen, am 2. Dezember 2017 ist Schluss.

Glamor of the 80s in Hollywood

The renowned photo gallery Camera Work manages to fascinate us with great work in almost every exhibition. The focus has always been on famous photographers from the glamor and fashion sector. Like Peter Lindbergh, Paolo Roversi, Patrick Demarchelier or, more recently, the Swiss Hans Feurer, it is almost always about beautiful women and beautiful men. But fashion photography is not the same as fashion photography. From boring catalog photos to clothing on unidentifiable models to the glossy photos of Vogue, Harpers-Bazaar, L’Officiel and Co. with the hippest supermodels on the scene. Just recently we had an exhibition about the 30-year anniversary of Claudia Schiffer in the Camera Work Partner Gallery, the CWC Gallery in the Aguststrasse in Berlin-Mitte. At the end of the exhibition, Madame Schiffer even came herself (see our video from last week).
That’s different with Matthew Rolston. You can not really call him fashion photographer, he is more a portrait photographer. But the boundaries are quite blurred. Like the fashion photographs by Peter Lindbergh, they are more expressive portraits as a representation of the latest collection of Comme de Garcon.
Born in California, Rolston was discovered by Andy Warhol in New York in the 1970s and became photographer of Warhol’s famous INTERVIEW magazine. Later, Matthew Rolston went to ROLLING STONE magazine and took hundreds of covers shoots for the music magazine. Orders from fashion magazines were added in the 1980s. When the music videos boomed in the mid-1980s with broadcasters like MTV, Rolston began to turn his attention to the film. He made over 200 music videos, such as for Michael Jackson’s video „Bad“ (1987), David Bowie’s „Miracle Goodnight“ (1993), Mary J. Blige „I’m Going Down“ (1995), Christina Aguilera „Candyman“ (2007) to Miley Cyrus „The Climb“ (2009).
For the „Hollwood Royal“ series from the 80s, Matthew Rolston was inspired by the glamor photos from the 40s and 50s of Hollywood. Rita Hayworth, Greta Garbo, Lauren Bacall were then called the Hollywod beauties, always in black and white and illuminated with a dramatic shadow play. Thus, beautiful photographs of Cybill Shepherd (1986), Christy Turlington (1987), Lisa Bonet („Angel Heart“) (1987), Robert Downey Jr. (1985), Kelly LeBrook (1985), Shade (1988) and Isabella Rossellini (1988).
