„DUMBO“ – Abenteuer – USA – 2019

Kaum eine Kindergeneration, die nicht den ursprünglichen „Dumbo“ Film von Walt Disney aus dem Jahre 1941 gesehen hat. Die berühmte Geschichte vom kleinen Baby-Elefanten, der so große Ohren hat, dass er damit sogar fliegen kann. Vor 78 Jahren zauberhaft als Zeichentrickfilm in Szene gesetzt. 1939 hatten Helen Aberson und Harold Pearl die Geschichte für Walt Disney geschrieben, woraus ein Buch entstand. 1941 dann die Verfilmung in einem nur 64 Minuten dauernden Film. Im Jahr darauf gab es bei der Oscar Verleihung sogar einen Preis für die beste Filmmusik und den besten Filmsong „Baby Mine“.
In jüngerer Zeit mit der neusten digitalen Animationstechnik werden nun fast alle Walt Disney Zeichentrickfilme der Vergangenheit als „Real“ Filme neu auf die Leinwand gebracht. Allein 22 Verfilmungen sind geplant. Von „Winnie Pooh“ über „Aladdin“, bis zu „Der König der Löwen“, Pinocchio“, „Arielle“, „Schneewitchen“ u.s.w.
Bereits realisiert wurden: „Cinderella“ 2015 von Kenneth Branagh mit Lily James, „Maleficent“ 2014 von Robert Stromberg mit Angelina Jolie und Elle Fanning, „Alice im Wunderland“ 2010 von Tim Burton mit Johnny Depp, „Das Dschungelbuch“ 2016 von Jon Favreau mit Scarlett Johansson, „Die Schöne und das Biest“ 2017 von Bill Condon mit Emma Watson, „Christopher Robin“ 2018 von Marc Forster mit Ewan McGregor.
Das Märchen „Schneewitchen“ wurde 2011 mit Julia Roberts und Lily Collins (allerdings nicht von Walt Disney) unter dem Titel „Mirror, Mirror“ verfilmt, fast gleichzeitig kamen „Snow White and the Huntsman“ mit Charlize Theron, Kristen Stewart und Chris Hemsworth 2012 in die Kinos.
„Der König der Löwen“ von Jon Favreau mit Beyoncé und „Aladdin“ von Guy Ritchie mit Will Smith sollen noch dieses Jahr in die Kinos kommen.

Kult-Regisseur Tim Burton und sein Drehbuchautor Ehren Kruger hatten keine leichte Aufgabe, als sie den Auftrag für die Neuverfilmung von „Dumbo“ bekamen. Da der alte „Dumbo“ nur knapp 1 Stunde lang ist musste also mehr Handlung hinzugefügt werden. So entstand eine fast komplett neue Geschichte.
Die Story: Der ehemalige Zirkusstar Holt Farrier (Colin Farrell) kommt aus dem Krieg zurück. Er hat bei einem Angriff seinen Arm verloren, wodurch seine Karriere als waghalsiger Zirkusreiter natürlich beendet ist. Also bleibt ihm nur der Job eines Elefantenpflegers beim Zirkus Max Medici. Zirkusdirektor Medici (Danny de Vito) kauft eine schwangere Elefantendame von dem deutschen Hans Brugelbecker (Lars Eidinger), weil er denkt, dass ein kleines Elefantenbaby mehr Publikum bringt. Doch die Elefantendame Jumbo bringt ein Baby zur Welt, welches viel zu große Ohren hat und damit irgendwie dümmlich (english: dumb = Dumbo) aussieht. Nur die Kinder von Holt, Milly und Joe, sind begeistert. Diese entdecken durch Zufall, dass Dumbo dank seiner Segelohren fliegen kann. Als der windige Unternehmer Vandevere (Michael Keaton) davon erfährt, will er zusammen mit der Trapezkünstlerin Colette (wie immer wunderschön: Eva Green) eine gigantische Show aufziehen.
Fazit: Schön gemachte Realverfilmung von einem Regisseur, der skurrile Stories und skurrile Charaktere liebt – ein Vergnügen nicht nur für Kinder.

Als Robert Redford zur Premiere von „Ein Gauner und Gentleman“ letztes Jahr bekannt gab, dies wäre nun sein letzter Film, waren doch die meisten Fans sehr überrascht. Einer der bekanntesten US-amerikanischen Schauspieler der Nachkriegszeit würde nun seine Karriere beenden wollen?
Aber immerhin ist er auch schon 82 Jahre alt, hat in 57 Berufsjahren in 45 Filmen gespielt, selber 9 Filme als Regisseur gedreht und mit „Ordinary People“ 1980 sogar vier Oscars für „Best picture“, Best Director“, „Best Screen Writing“ und „Best Supporting Role“ bekommen.
Was will man mehr?
Kaum einer weiß, dass Robert Redford (*1936) nach abgebrochener Universität (der frühe Tod der Mutter hatte ihn alkoholsüchtig gemacht) zunächst auf den Ölfeldern Kaliforniens schuftete, bevor er als Backpacker nach Europa ging und in Paris und Florenz Straßenkünstler wurde. Mit 22 Jahren ging er zurück in die USA. In New York begann er Theaterdesign zu studieren und ging zusätzlich auf die American Academy of Dramatic Arts. Schon bald gab es erste Engagements auf dem Broadway und 1962 war er zum ersten Mal auf der Leinwand zu sehen. Der Rest ist Geschichte.
Sein größter Erfolg war sicherlich 1969 der Film „Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid“. Später gründete Redford unter dem Namen Sundance das gleichnamige Filmfestival in Colorado, mittlerweile einer der wichtigsten Filmfestivals weltweit. Redford ist in zweiter Ehe mit der deutschen Malerin Sibylle Szaggars verheiratet, die Hochzeit hatte 2009 im Hamburger Restaurant Louis C. Jacob stattgefunden.
Robert Redford spielt in „Ein Gauner und Gentleman“ den Gangster Forrest Tucker (*1920 – †2004), der wirklich gelebt hat und berühmt war für seine vielen Banküberfälle und Gefängnisausbrüche.
2004 schrieb der Journalist David Grann in der Zeitschrift „The New Yorker“ einen Artikel über Tucker mit der Headline „The Old Man and the Gun“. Daraus ist jetzt dieser Film entstanden.
Fazit: Spannend und rührend zugleich, bei dem Altstar Robert Redford nochmal seine ganze Kunst des Schauspielens aufzeigen kann. Charme und Witz in einer Gestalt – großartig!

Hardly a generation of children who did not see the original „Dumbo“ movie by Walt Disney from 1941. The famous story of the little baby elephant that has such big ears that it can even fly with it. Magically staged as a cartoon 78 years ago. In 1939, Helen Aberson and Harold Pearl wrote the story for Walt Disney, which resulted in a book. 1941 then the filming in a only 64 minutes lasting movie. The following year, the movie won an Oscar at the Academy Awards for the best film music and the best song „Baby Mine“.
More recently, with the latest digital animation technology, almost all Walt Disney animated cartoons of the past are being re-released as „real“ movies. 22 films are planned. From „Winnie Pooh“ to „Aladdin“, „The Lion King“, Pinocchio „,“ Arielle „,“ Snow White „etc.

„The Lion King“ by Jon Favreau with Beyoncé and „Aladdin“ by Guy Ritchie with Will Smith are scheduled to hit theaters this year.
Cult director Tim Burton and his scriptwriter Ehren Kruger did not have an easy task when they got the job for the remake of „Dumbo“.
Since the old „Dumbo“ is just under 1 hour long, more action had to be added. This is how an almost completely new story came about.
The story: Former circus star Holt Farrier (Colin Farrell) returns from the war. He has lost his arm in an attack, which naturally ends his career as a daredevil circus rider. So he only has the job of an elephant keeper at the circus Max Medici. Circus director Medici (Danny de Vito) buys a pregnant elephant lady from the German Hans Brugelbecker (Lars Eidinger) because he thinks a little baby elephant brings more audience. But the elephant lady Jumbo gives birth to a baby, which has ears that are too big, what looks somehow stupid (dumb = dumbo). Only the children of Holt, Milly and Joe, are thrilled. They discover by chance that Dumbo can fly thanks to his ears. When the windy entrepreneur Vandevere (Michael Keaton) learns about it, he wants to put on a gigantic show together with the trapeze artist Colette (beautiful as always: Eva Green).
Conclusion: Beautifully made „real“ film by a director who loves bizarre stories and bizarre characters – a pleasure not only for children.

When Robert Redford announced the premiere of „The Old Man & the Gun“ last year, that this movie would be his last one, most fans were very surprised. One of the most famous American actors of the postwar period would now want to end his career? But after all, he is already 82 years old, has played in 50 professional years in 45 films, even made 9 films as a director and with „Ordinary People“ in 1980 even won four Oscars for „Best Picture“, Best Director, „Best Screen Writing“ and „Best Supporting Role“. What more could you ask for?

His greatest success was certainly in 1969 the movie „Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid“. Later, Redford founded a film festival in Colorado under the name Sundance, now one of the most important film festivals worldwide. Redford is married in second marriage with the German artist Sibylle Szaggars, the wedding had taken place in 2009 in the Hamburg restaurant Louis C. Jacob.
Robert Redford plays the gangster Forrest Tucker (* 1920 – † 2004) in „The Old Man & the Gun“, who really lived and was famous for his many bank robberies and prison escapes. In 2004, journalist David Grann wrote an article in The New Yorker magazine about Tucker with the headline The Old Man and the Gun. That’s the origin of this movie.
Conclusion: Exciting and touching at the same time, in which old star Robert Redford can again show his whole art of acting. Charme and humor in one character – great!
