Große Premiere der heiteren Oper von Giuseppe Verdi zu den FESTTAGEN BERLIN in der Staatsoper Unter den Linden.
Hintergrund
Die Figur des Falstaff kommt zuerst in Werken von William Shakespeare Ende des 16. Jahrhunderts vor. Später griffen auch andere Autoren die Geschichte des fettleibigen, raufsüchtigen und liebestollen Ritters auf. Der italienische Komponist Giuseppe Verdi machte daraus eine Oper in drei Akten. Es war sein letztes Bühnenstück. Die Uraufführung war am 9. Februar 1893 in der Mailänder Scala.

Handlung
Falstaff sitz mit seinen Kumpanen in seiner Stammkneipe. Ein Dr. Cajus beschwert sich, Falstaff hätte ihm übel mitgespielt, doch der lässt ihn abblitzen. Als Falstaff die Rechnung zahlen soll merkt er, dass er kein Geld mehr hat. Dabei kommt ihm eine Idee: Er will die beiden reichen Damen Alice Ford und Meg Page verführen und sie um ihr Geld erleichtern. Er schreibt also zwei Briefe an die beiden Damen und bittet um ein Rendezvous. Doch diese kennen sich und sind gerade bei einem kleinen Plausch, als ihnen gleichzeitig die Briefe von einem Boten überreicht werden. Sie stellen fest, dass beide Briefe komplett identisch sind und von ein und demselben Absender stammen. Sie beschließen also sich zu rächen. Ohne von dem Komplott etwas zu ahnen kommt Falstaff zunächst zu Alice, wird dort überrumpelt und in die Themse geworfen. Wütend und durchnässt kommt er zu Hause an. Doch eine Freundin von Alice und Meg, Mrs Quickly, wartet schon auf ihn, und erzählt, alles wäre nur ein Missverständnis gewesen und Alice wolle ihn nach wie vor treffen. Er lässt sich also noch einmal einwickeln und kommt nachts verkleidet zum verabredeten Ort, dem Garten von Windsor. Kaum dort angekommen wird er von unheimlichen Gestalten bedrängt und gepeinigt. Doch plötzlich treten die Bürger von Windsor hervor und feiern die Hochzeit des Liebespaares Nannetta und Fenton. Und auch Falstaff kann endlich wieder lachen.
Kritik
Nachdem die ersten beiden Inszenierungen an der alten/ neuen Staatsoper Unter den Linden noch nicht ganz überzeugen konnten, hatten wir Anfang März mit Salome von Strauss eine erste richtig spannende Neuproduktion. Und auch der Falstaff wird ein Erfolg werden. Michael Volle in der Titelpartie kann mit seiner großen Erscheinung vollen Körpereinsatz bringen, mimt den rauhen Trunkenbold ganz wunderbar und seine Stimme ist einfach herrlich anzuhören. Eine Idealbesetzung. Dagegen kommen seine Mitstreiter auf der Bühne natürlich nicht ganz an. Dennoch sind sie keineswegs schlecht. Alfredo Daza als Mr. Ford war noch wenige Tage vorher krank gewesen und musste sich etwas schonen. Francesco Demuro als der junge verliebte Fenton macht sich gut, Dr. Cajus ist okay und auch die Kumpanen von Falstaff, Stephan Rügamer als Bardolfo und Jan Martinik als Pistola, können sich hören lassen. Ganz zauberhaft sind die Damen, anzusehen und anzuhören, besonders Nadine Sierra als die frisch verliebte Nannetta. Als diese in der Szene am Pool ihren Bademantel öffnet und nur noch im Bikini dasteht geht ein Raunen durchs Publikum. Oper kann auch sexy!
Ein weiteres Highlight ist das Bühnenbild. Mal ganz einfach in der Kneipe (beziehungsweise davor), mal ganz außergewöhnlich mit Swimmingpool im Garten der Fords. Ob wir diese Möglichkeit der neuen Technik der Staatsoper verdanken? Auf jeden Fall ist es spektakulär. Und Fenton darf im Pool (nicht ganz freiwillig) baden gehen. Im Hintergrund machen knackige Jungs beim Fitness Hanteltraining. Ihr seht, dank Regisseur Mario Martone ist Falstaff im 21. Jahrhundert angekommen.
Dazu passt, dass auch die Szenen des letzten Aktes ebenfalls erotisch aufgeheizt sind. Der Park von Windsor entpuppt sich nämlich als Treffpunkt der SM-Szene mit sich kopulierenden Paaren in schwarzem Lackleder und Netzhemdchen. Aber alles bleibt cool. Nichts, was irgendwie anstößig wäre. Es gibt der nächtlichen Szenerie aber den gewissen Kitzel. Die Gäste der FESTTAGE BERLIN an der Staatsoper erwartet auf jeden Fall ein besonderes Ostererlebnis.

Great premiere of the cheerful opera by Giuseppe Verdi for the FESTTAGE BERLIN in the Staatsoper Unter den Linden.
Background
The figure of Falstaff first appears in works by William Shakespeare at the end of the 16th century. Later, other writers also took up the story of the obese, ravenous, and lovesick knight. The Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi made it into an opera in three acts. It was his last stage play. The premiere was on February 9, 1893 in the Milan Scala.
Story
Falstaff is sitting with his cronies in his local pub. A Dr. Cajus complains that Falstaff has done him a bad job, but he lets him down. When Falstaff should pay the bill, he realizes that he has no more money. He comes up with an idea: he wants to seduce the two rich ladies Alice Ford and Meg Page and make their money easier. So he writes two letters to the two ladies and asks for a rendezvous. But they know each other and are having a little chat when they receive the letters from a messenger. They notice that both letters are completely identical and come from the same sender. So they decide to take revenge. Without suspecting anything of the plot, Falstaff first comes to Alice, where he is taken by surprise and thrown into the Thames. Angry and soaked, he arrives at home. But a friend of Alice and Meg, Mrs Quickly, is already waiting for him, saying that everything was just a misunderstanding and Alice still wanted to meet him. So he lets himself be wrapped up again and comes dressed at night to the appointed place, the garden of Windsor. As soon as he arrives, he is beset by uncanny figures and tormented. But suddenly the citizens of Windsor emerge and celebrate the wedding of the lovers Nannetta and Fenton. And Falstaff can finally laugh again.
Critics
After the first two productions at the old / new Staatsoper Unter den Linden, which could not quite convince, we had a really exciting new production at the beginning of March with „Salome“ by Strauss. And also the Falstaff will be a success. Michael Volle in the title role can bring with his great appearance full body use, mimes the rough drunkard quite wonderful and his voice is just fantastic to listen to. An ideal cast. On the other hand, his teammates on the stage, of course, not quite come on. Nevertheless, they are by no means bad. Alfredo Daza as Mr. Ford had been ill a few days earlier and had to spare a bit. Francesco Demuro, the young Fenton in love, is doing well. Cajus is okay and also the cronies of Falstaff, Stephan Rügamer as Bardolfo and Jan Martinik as Pistola, can be heard. The ladies are quite magical to look at and listen to, especially Nadine Sierra as the newly in love Nannetta. When she opens her bathrobe in the scene at the pool and appears only in a bikini there is a murmur through the audience. Opera can be sexy too!
Another highlight is the stage design. Quite exceptional with a swimming pool in the garden of the Fords. We owe this possibility to the new technique of the new Staatsoper? In any case, it is spectacular. And Fenton is allowed to go swimming in the pool (not entirely voluntarily). In the background, crunchy boys do fitness dumbbell training. You see, thanks to director Mario Martone, Falstaff has arrived in the 21st century.
It fits that also the scenes of the last act are also erotically heated up. The park of Windsor turns out to be the meeting place of the SM scene with copulating couples in black patent leather and net shirts. But everything stays cool. Nothing that would be offensive somehow. But this nighttime scenery give the piece a certain tickling. The guests of the FESTTAGE BERLIN at the State Opera will definitely expect a special Easter experience!
