(Unsere neue Autorin Martina Ziegler schreibt über die Ausstellung „Captivate“ im Düsseldorfer Kunstpalast, die die Photographie und die Mode und damit auch ein Stimmungsbild der 90er Jahre zeigt. Ein Jahrzehnt, welches wohl als eines der friedlichsten in die Geschichte eingehen wird – kurz nach dem Fall der Berliner Mauer und dem Ende des Kalten Krieges und noch vor dem Angriff auf Amerika am 11.September 2001. „Captivate! Faszinierend und nicht umsonst mit Ausrufezeichen! Mich hat sie eingefangen. Die Ausstellung über die Modephotographie der 90er Jahre.
Überzeugend kuratiert von dem ehemaligen Supermodel Claudia Schiffer (über viele Jahre die Muse von Karl Lagerfeld (†2019), Chef-Designer bei CHANEL), entführt sie den Besucher in die Welt der Neunziger, wo vieles Top war:
die Designer, die Fotografen und eben die Riege der damaligen Supermodels, bei denen man nicht nur ihre Gesichter, sondern auch ihre Namen und ihre Stories kannte.
Plötzlich waren Fotomodelle zu Persönlichkeiten geworden, die sich nun auf Augenhöhe mit Designern und Fotografen begegneten und dadurch eine ganz neue Anerkennung erfuhren.
Es war eine berauschende Zeit des Aufbruchs, als Claudia Schiffer 1987 im Club Checker`s in Düsseldorf auf der „Kö“ (Königsallee) entdeckt wurde und ganz Deutschland sein erstes international bekanntes Supermodel feierte.
Auch ich war damals oft in dem Club und vielleicht sind wir uns auch mal begegnet. Wenn es so gewesen wäre, würde es mich im Nachhinein freuen, denn ich war damals ganz begeistert von der zunächst schüchternen jungen Frau, die sich in kürzester Zeit zu einem selbstbewussten Topmodel entwickeln sollte.
Genauso wie ihre Kolleginnen im Olymp der Mode, hatte Claudia Schiffer den Spirit etwas darzustellen, dass schon in ihr schlummerte.
Den Sex-Appeal einer Brigitte Bardot in den Fotos von Ellen von Unwerth konnte Claudia Schiffer genauso glaubhaft rüberbringen, wie die edle Noblesse für Karl und Chanel.

Als Gesicht der Guess Kampagne erlangte Claudia Schiffer Berühmtheit.
Ähnlich prägten die Gesichter von Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Kate Moss, Christy Turlington, Linda Evangelista, Nadja Auermann und die anderen, nicht nur Modemarken und Werbekampagnen, sondern wurden untrennbar verknüpft mit den Starfotografen dieser Zeit.
Herb Ritts, Peter Lindbergh, Jürgen Teller, Michel Comte, Bruce Webber, Helmut Newton und viele mehr.
In der Ausstellung sind sie wunderbar zu vergleichen. Insgesamt sind Arbeiten von 20 Photographen zu sehen.
Es sind faszinierende Einblicke in die Stilistik der Neunziger und ihrer Bandbreite.
Von Momentaufnahmen Backstage bis hin zur perfekt inszenierten Großstadtszenerie.
Und alles war noch analog!
Auch dieser Aspekt kommt nicht zu kurz und erzählt in vielfältiger Weise vom speziellen Gefühl dieser Zeit.
Mit zahlreichen Polaroids (ein analoges Sofortbild, welches sich in wenigen Minuten selbst entwickelt), als es damals noch keine Möglichkeit gab, gleich nach der Aufnahme die Fotos zu betrachten.
Durch den gut gemachten Audio-Guide, den Claudia Schiffer selbst eingesprochen hat, wird man sehr unterhaltsam durch die Ausstellung geführt.
Die vielen Zitate der damaligen Hauptakteure, von Herb Ritts bis Anna Wintour (sie hatte im Jahre 1989 ihre Stelle als Chefin der amerikanischen VOGUE angetreten und wurde zur wichtigen Wegbereiterin der neuen Supermodels-Ära) machen den Besuch der Ausstellung spannend und lebendig.

Fashion photography of the 90s in the Museum Kunstpalast in Düsseldorf

(Our new author Martina Ziegler writes about the exhibition „Captivate“ in the Düsseldorf Kunstpalast, which shows photography and fashion and thus also a mood picture of the 90s. A decade that will go down in history as one of the most peaceful – shortly after the fall of the Berlin Wall and the end of the Cold War and even before the attack on America on September 11, 2001. For many of us, the 90s remain one of the most beautiful decades of our lives, editor’s note.)
„Captivate! Fascinating and not for nothing with exclamation marks! She caught me. The exhibition on fashion photography of the 90s.
Convincingly curated by the former supermodel of the 90s, Claudia Schiffer (for many years the muse of Karl Lagerfeld († 2019), chief designer at CHANEL), she takes the visitor into the world of the nineties, where many things were top: the designers, the photographers and the ranks of the supermodels of the time, which were known not only by their faces, but also by their names and their stories.
Suddenly they had become personalities who now met designers and photographers on an equal footing and thus received a whole new level of recognition.
It was an intoxicating time of departure when Claudia Schiffer was discovered in 1987 at Club Checker`s in Düsseldorf on the „Kö“ (Königsallee), when Germany celebrated its first internationally known supermodel.
I was often at the club back then and maybe we met one another. If it had been like that, I would be happy in retrospect, because at the time I was very enthusiastic about the initially shy young woman who was to develop into a self-confident top model in a very short time.
Just like her colleagues in the Olympus of fashion, Claudia Schiffer had the spirit to portray something that was already slumbering in her.
Claudia Schiffer was able to convey the sex appeal of Brigitte Bardot in the photos of Ellen von Unwerth just as believably in the Haute Couture nobility fashion for Karl Lagerfeld and Chanel.

Claudia Schiffer became famous as the face of the Guess campaign.
Similarly, the faces of Christy Turlington, Linda Evangelista, Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Kate Moss, Nadja Auermann and the others. With her personalities they shaped fashion brands and advertising campaigns and were inextricably linked with the star photographers of that time.
Herb Ritts, Peter Lindbergh, Jürgen Teller, Michel Comte, Bruce Webber, Helmut Newton and many more.
They are wonderful to compare in the exhibition.
A total of 20 photographers can be seen.
The exhibition „Captivate!“ gives fascinating insights into the style of the nineties and their range.
From snapshots at backstage of runway shows to perfectly arranged scenes in big city.
And everything was still analog!
This aspect is also not neglected and tells in many ways about the special feeling of this time.
With numerous Polaroids (an analogue instant photo that develops itself in a few minutes), when there was no way to look at the photos immediately after taking them.
The well-made audio guide, spoken by Claudia Schiffer herself, guides you through the exhibition in a very entertaining way.
The many quotes from the main actors at the time, from Herb Ritts to Anna Wintour (she took up her position as head of the American VOGUE in 1989 and became an important pioneer of the new supermodel era) make the visit to the exhibition exciting and lively.
Conclusion:
worth seeing!
