Das vielleicht letzte epische Werk eines Meisters des amerikanischen Kinos

MARTIN SCORSESE gehört sicher zu den wichtigsten US-amerikanischen Filmregisseuren. 1942 in Queens/ New York als Sohn von italienischen Einwanderern geboren, absolvierte SCORSESE seine Ausbildung zum Filmregisseur an der Universität von New York. Mit Anfang 30 zog er nach Hollywood.
Schon sein erster Langfilm, „Wer klopft denn da an meine Tür (Who’s that kocking on my door), noch in New York gedreht, gewann auf dem Chicago Filmfestival 1967 den Preis für den Besten Film.
Sein vierter Langfilm „Alice lebt hier nicht mehr“ (Alice doesn’t live here anymore) wurde 1975 bereits zu den Filmfestspielen nach Cannes eingeladen. Später gewann der Film bei der Oscar-Verleihung den Preis für die Beste Hauptdarstellerin (Ellen Burstyn).
Als MARTIN SCORSESE nur ein Jahr später in Cannes 1976 die Goldene Palme für „Taxi Driver“ gewann, war der internationale Durchbruch gelungen und eine Legende geboren.
Und mit ROBERT DE NIRO als Hauptdarsteller in vielen seiner Filme.
Den Oscar für den Besten Film und die Beste Regie bekam MARTIN SCORSESE allerdings erst 2007 für „Departed – Unter Feinden“ (The Departed), sein bis heute erfolgreichster Film – mit LEONARDO DICAPRIO in der Hauptrolle.
Jetzt kommt mit „Killers oft he Flower Moon“ MARTIN SCORSESES (mittlerweile 81 Jahre alt) episches Alterswerk in die Kinos, in dem er seine beiden größten Stars an einem Set vereint: ROBERT DE NIRO und LEONARDO DICAPRIO

Story
Die gesamte Geschichte des Films sowie seiner handelnden Personen sind historisch verbürgt. Basierend auf dem 2017 erschienen Sachbuch „Killers oft the Flower Moon – The Osage Murders“ des amerikanischen Autors David Grann entwickelt MARTIN SCORSESE hier eine unglaubliche Kriminalgeschichte. Zwischen 1920 und 1925 mussten über 60 Mitglieder der OSAGE NATION ihr Leben lassen. Ein weiteres beschämendes Beispiel für die Art und Weise, wie die indigene Bevölkerung Nordamerikas von den weißen Einwanderern aus Europa behandelt wurden.
Gleich zu Beginn erfährt der Zuschauer, dass in dem Indianer-Reservat der OSAGE NATION in Oklahoma Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts Öl gefunden wurde, welches ihre Stammesmitglieder zu den reichsten Bürgern der USA machte (eine vierköpfige Familie verdiente damals umgerechnet ca. 600.000 US Dollar jährlich).
Etwas verwirrend ist eine Szene, in der die indigene Molly (LILY GLADSTONE) in einem Büro ihres Vormundes sitzt, um sich ihren finanziellen Anteil an den Schürfrechten der Erdölförderung ausbezahlen zu lassen. Um das zu verstehen, muss der Interessierte bei Wikipedia über die OSAGE-NATION nachlesen.
Darin steht, dass die US-Regierung in Washington (Oklahoma wurde erst 1907 Teil der Vereinigten Staaten) den OSAGE nicht zutraute mit dem vielen Geld aus dem Ölgeschäft richtig umzugehen. Weshalb jeder, der einen Anteil an den Schürfrechten hatte, einen vom Staat bestellten Vormund bekam, der für die Auszahlung der Gelder zuständig war. Allein das war schon eine unfassbare Diskriminierung. Wie man sich denken kann, wurde die Funktion des Vormundes zu einem riesigen Betrug genutzt. Im Jahre 2011 wurde den OSAGE deshalb von einem Bundesgericht eine Entschädigung von 380 Millionen Dollar zugesagt. Weitere Verfahren sind noch anhängig.
Die OSAGE NATION stammten ursprünglich von der Ostküste Nordamerikas im Bereich von North- and South-Carolina und wanderten Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts westwärts Richtung Missouri, Arkansas und Oklahoma. Ihre Zahl betrug zu dieser Zeit ca. 5.000 Stammesmitglieder. Ihre Wanderwege führten sie über eine Fläche von ca. 200.000 km2, was etwas die Hälfte der Fläche der BRD bedeutet. So kann sich jeder gut vorstellen, wie der millionenfache Einfall der weißen Siedler, die das ganze Land überschwemmten und das Land in Besitz nahmen, auf die indigenen Völker Nordamerikas gewirkt haben muss.
Nach dem amerikanische Bürgerkrieg Mitte der 1860er Jahre wurden den amerikanischen Ureinwohnern Reservate zugeordnet. Da Oklahoma (damals noch als „Indianer-Territorium“ bezeichnet) als wenig attraktiv und fruchtbar galt, wurden hier die meisten Indianerstämme angesiedelt. So auch die OSAGE. Heute zählen sie ungefähr 20.000 Mitglieder. Ca. 8.000 davon leben in OSAGE-County/Oklahoma auf einer Fläche von ca. 6.000 km2.
Der Film beginnt mit der Rückkehr von Ernest Burkhart (LEONARDO DICAPRIO) nach Oklahoma. Er hatte als Soldat im 1. Weltkrieg gedient. Sein Onkel, der Rinderbaron William Hale (ROBERT DE NIRO), hilft ihm sich in das neue Leben zu integrieren und verschafft ihm einen Job als Taxifahrer. Dabei lernt er die alleinstehende Molly (LILY GLADSTONE) vom Stamm der OSAGE kennen, die ihn immer öfter als Fahrer bucht. Schließlich verlieben sie sich ineinander und heiraten.
William Hale riecht hier eine Chance an die wertvollen Bodenrechte von Mollys Familie zu kommen: Sterben Mollys Geschwister samt (meist weißer) Ehegatten geht das Vermögen an seinen Neffen – und damit auch an seine Familie. Daraufhin sterben nacheinander alle Familienmitglieder. Und dass sogar mit Beteiligung des einfältigen Ernest, der sich von seinem diabolischen Onkel dazu überreden läßt. Bis er sogar am Schluss noch seine Ehefrau vergiften soll – auch wenn ihm dieser letzte Schritt sichtlich schwer fällt.
Als die vielen Morde (nicht nur William Hale spielt dieses tödliche Spiel, auch andere Weiße versuchen sich selbst auf diese Weise zu reichen Witwern zu machen) immer mehr und mehr landesweit in der Presse erscheint, schaltet sich das neu gegründete FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigations) ein und findet schnell heraus, was hier gespielt wird. Die Bösen landen auf der Anklagebank, auch William Hale und sein Neffe Ernest. Obwohl zu lebenslänglicher Haft verurteilt kommen sie aber nach nur wenigen Jahren auf Bewährung wieder frei. Molly, gerade noch in letzter Sekunde vor dem Giftmord gerettet, lässt sich scheiden und stirbt 12 Jahre später an Diabetes.

Kritik
Filme mit Überlänge gibt es heute immer öfter. Sie sind quasi Standard geworden. Eine Filmlänge mit 90 Minuten, also 1 ½ Stunden, galt mal als die ideale Länge, was die Konzentration des Zuschauers anbelangt.
Bei „Vom Winde verweht“ (Gone with the wind) von 1939, sozusagen die Mutter aller Filme mit Überlänge, waren es 220 Minuten. Aber da gab es dann auch mittendrin eine Pause von 10 Minuten.
Heute brauche ich enormes Sitzfleisch und viel Popcorn, um die 3 ½ Stunden von „Killers of Flower Moon“ aushalten zu können. Was bedeutete, dass ich die letzten 30 Minuten des Films ständig überlegte, ob ich denn jetzt nicht raus gehen sollte. Letztlich habe ich dann aber bis zum Schluss durchgehalten – nicht ohne froh zu sein, als es endlich vorbei war.
Bitte versteht mich nicht falsch. Mein Wunsch auf Verlassen des Kinosaals lag keineswegs an der Qualität des Films, sondern eher an der Schwierigkeit so viele Informationen und Eindrücke vernünftig bewältigen zu können.
Um es gleich vorne weg zu sagen: „Killers oft he Flower Moon“ ist weder ein Krimi noch ein Historienschinken – aber trotzdem absolut sehenswert.
Er ist die Beschreibung einer bestimmten Episode in der Geschichte Nordamerikas und ihrer Ureinwohner. Und damit, was ihnen von skrupellosen (weißen) Menschen angetan wurde.
Zunächst einmal ist die Geschichte selbst sehr spannend und gleichzeitig erkenntnisreich. Denn ich bin sicher, dass keiner meiner Leser je von dieser wahren Geschichte gehört noch gelesen hat. Und doch hat sie sich genauso, wie im Film beschrieben, zugetragen.
Wie immer bei solchen großartigen und wichtigen Filmen wird die Geschichte getragen durch ihre Schauspieler. Erst dadurch bekommt der Zuschauer das Verständnis für die Figuren und für das Drama.
Hier sind es die Ausnahme-Schauspieler ROBERT DE NIRO als der hinterlistige William Hale und LEONARDO DICAPRIO als der etwas beschränkte Ernest Burkhart, ohne die der Film sicher nicht funktionieren würde.
Besonders ROBERT DE NIROS Spiel als diabolischer Drahtzieher ist beeindruckend. Dagegen flacht DICAPRIOS Darstellung etwas ab. Fast immer sieht der Zuschauer sein besorgtes Gesicht mit runzliger Stirn und herabhängenden Mundwinkeln, ohne dass sich daran in 3 ½ Stunden etwas ändern würde. Nur in den Momenten mit seiner Frau Molly hellt sich seine Miene etwas auf, auch wenn er sie am Ende vergiften will…
Das absolute Highlight in diesem Film sind aber nicht diese beiden Superstars, sondern die Schauspielerin LILY GLADSTONE als Molly. Dieser wunderbare ruhige und großes Charisma ausstrahlende Ausdruck in ihrem Gesicht bleibt noch lange nach dem Film in Erinnerung. Was für eine Entdeckung! Es gelingt ihr perfekt die fast unerschütterliche Liebe zu ihrem Mann Ernest zu zeigen, obwohl sie längst erahnt, dass er sie umbringen will.
Grandios.
Fazit: Für die ganze Familie sehenswert. Noch für kurze Zeit ist der Film in unseren Kinos zu sehen, dann geht er zu Apple TV als Streaming Angebot.

MARTIN SCORSESE is certainly one of the most important American film directors. Born in 1942 in Queens/New York to Italian immigrants, SCORSESE trained as a film director at the University of New York. He moved to Hollywood in his early 30s.
His first feature film, “Who’s that knocking on my door,” shot in New York, won the award for Best Film at the 1967 Chicago Film Festival.
His fourth feature film “Alice doesn’t live here anymore” was invited to the Cannes Film Festival in 1975. The film later won the Best Actress (Ellen Burstyn) award at the Academy Awards.
When MARTIN SCORSESE won the Palme d’Or at Cannes in 1976 for “Taxi Driver” just a year later, the international breakthrough was achieved and a legend was born.
And with ROBERT DE NIRO as the leading actor in many of his films.
However, MARTIN SCORSESE only received the Oscar for Best Film and Best Director in 2007 for “The Departed”, his most successful film to date – with LEONARDO DICAPRIO in the lead role.
Now, “Killers of the Flower Moon,” MARTIN SCORSESE’s (now 81-year-old) epic old work is coming to cinemas, in which he brings together his two biggest stars on one set: ROBERT DE NIRO and LEONARDO DICAPRIO

Story
The entire story of the movie and its characters are historically verified.
Based on the non-fiction book “Killers of the Flower Moon – The Osage Murders” by American author David Grann, published in 2017, MARTIN SCORSESE develops an incredible crime story here.
Between 1920 and 1925, over 60 members of the OSAGE NATION lost their lives.
Another shameful example of the way the indigenous people of North America were treated by white immigrants from Europe.
Right at the beginning, the viewer learns that oil was found on the OSAGE NATION Indian reservation in Oklahoma at the beginning of the 20th century, which made its tribe members the richest citizens in the USA (at that time, an OSAGE family earned the equivalent of around 600,000 US dollars annually ).
A scene in the beginning is somewhat confusing in which the indigenous Molly (LILY GLADSTONE) sits in her guardian’s office to get paid her financial share of the mineral rights for oil production.
To understand this, anyone interested must read about the OSAGE NATION on Wikipedia.
It says that the US government in Washington (Oklahoma only became part of the United States in 1907) did not trust the OSAGE to properly handle the large amount of money from the oil business.
Which is why everyone who had a share in the mining rights had a guardian appointed by the state who was responsible for paying out the money. That alone was an unbelievable discrimination.
As you can imagine, the role of guardian was used to commit a huge fraud. In 2011, OSAGE was awarded $380 million in compensation by a federal court. Further proceedings are still pending.
The OSAGE NATION originally came from the east coast of North America in the area of North and South Carolina and migrated west towards Missouri, Arkansas and Oklahoma at the beginning of the 19th century.
At that time their number was around 5,000 tribe members.
Their hiking trails took them over an area of around 200,000 km2, which is around half the area of the Federal Republic of Germany!
So everyone can well imagine what effect the millions of white settlers who flooded the entire country and took possession of the land must have had on the indigenous peoples of North America.
After the American Civil War in the mid-1860s, Native Americans were assigned in reservations.
Since Oklahoma (at that time still referred to as “Indian Territory”) was considered unattractive and not very fertile, most of the Indian tribes were settled here. So does the OSAGE. Today they have around 20,000 members. Around 8,000 of them live in OSAGE County/Oklahoma on an area of around 6,000 km2.
The movie begins with Ernest Burkhart (LEONARDO DICAPRIO) returning to Oklahoma.
He served as a soldier in World War I. His uncle, the cattle baron William Hale (ROBERT DE NIRO), helps him integrate into his new life and gets him a job as a taxi driver. So Ernest meets Molly (LILY GLADSTONE) from the OSAGE tribe, who increasingly books him as a driver.
They fall in love and get married.
William Hale smells an opportunity to get hold of the valuable land rights of Molly’s family: If Molly’s siblings and their (mostly white) spouses die, the assets go to his nephew – and thus also to his family.
Then all family members die one after the other. And that even involves the simple-minded Ernest, who allows himself to be persuaded to do so by his diabolical uncle. Until he has to poison his wife at the end – even if this last step is clearly difficult for him.
As the many murders (not only William Hale plays this deadly game, other whites also try to make themselves rich widowers in this way) appear in the national press more and more, so the newly founded FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigations) intervenes and quickly find out what’s playing here.
The bad guys end up in the dock, including William Hale and his nephew Ernest.
Although they were sentenced to life imprisonment, they were released on parole after just a few years.
Molly, saved from being poisoned at the last second, gets a divorce and dies of diabetes 12 years later.

Critics
Films with more than 3 hours length are becoming more and more common these days.
They have practically become standard. A film length of 90 minutes, 1 ½ hours, was once considered the ideal length in terms of the viewer’s concentration.
“Gone with the Wind” from 1939, the mother of all over-length films, was 220 minutes. But at that time there was a break of 10 minutes in the middle.
Today you need an enormous amount of ’seat flesh‘ and a lot of popcorn to be able to endure the 3 ½ hours of “Killers of Flower Moon”. Which meant that for the last 30 minutes of the movie I was constantly wondering whether I should go out now. In the end I persevered until the end – not without being happy when it was finally over.
Please do not get me wrong. My desire to leave the cinema was by no means due to the quality of the movie, but rather to the difficulty of being able to properly deal with so much information and impressions.
To say it straight away: “Killers of the Flower Moon” is neither a crime thriller nor a historical piece – but is absolutely worth seeing.
It is the description of a specific episode in the history of North America and its indigenous people. And what was done to them by unscrupulous (white) people.
First of all, the story itself is very exciting and insightful at the same time. Because I am sure that none of my readers have ever heard or read of this true story. And yet it happened exactly as described in the movie.
As always with such great and important films, the story is carried by its actors. Only then does the viewer gain an understanding of the characters and the drama.
Here it is the exceptional actors ROBERT DE NIRO as the deceitful William Hale and LEONARDO DICAPRIO as the somewhat limited Ernest Burkhart, without whom the film would certainly not work.
ROBERT DE NIROS‘ performance as the diabolical mastermind is particularly impressive.
In contrast, DICAPRIO’s portrayal flattens out somewhat. The viewer almost always sees his worried face with a wrinkled forehead and drooping corners of his mouth, without anything changing in 3 ½ hours. Only in the moments with his wife Molly does his expression brighten a little, even if he wants to poison her in the end…
The absolute highlight in this movie are not these two superstars, but the actress LILY GLADSTONE as Molly.
This wonderfully calm and charismatic expression on her face will remain in your memory long after the film is over.
What a discovery! She perfectly manages to show her almost unshakable love for her husband Ernest, even though she has long suspected that he wants to kill her. Great performance.
Conclusion: Worth seeing for the whole family. The film can be seen in our cinemas for a short time, then it will go to Apple TV as a streaming offer.
