Insgesamt 54 in 22 Kategorien.

ECHO Classic 2017
By Holger Jacobs

The ECHO Award 2017 at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg last night.

What the US-American award ceremony GRAMMY is, is the Germans ECHO. Last night the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg celebrated the prize winners with lots of glamour and lots of music. Moderator for the evening were, as three times before, Thomas Gottschalk.

The highlights were certainly the opera stars Jonas Kaufmann and Joyce DiDonato. Jonas Kaufmann had already received this prize for the seventh time (which seemed almost embarrassing him). Jonas Kaufmann is such a bit of the George Clooney for the Oscar Ceremony: Without him the evening is not really perfect! The laudators were inter alia. the actors Sebastian Koch and Katja Riemann, jazz trumpeter Till Brönner and Thomas Gottschalk himself.

The most important prizes are, of course, the ones for solo instruments and singing. Matthias Goerne as the best (opera) singer (Jonas Kaufmann received the prize for his album „Dolce Vita“), Joyce DiDonato as the best singer, Kent Nagano as conductor of the year, the Boston Symphony Orchestra as orchestra of the year, Maurizio Pollini as the best pianist, Christian Tetzlaff (whom I know from a concert at Schloss Elmau) as best violinist, Johannes Moser as the best cellist, and the very attractive Ksenija Sidorova from Latvia in the field of accordion. As I confessed to my disgrace, I did not even know that there is a category for accordion. But with this kind of woman …

So that the evening is not boring and as many musicians and artists as possible can get an award, there are many other prizes to be awarded. 54 prizes in 22 categories.

For example, the outstanding French pianist Lucas Debargue, as well as for categories that call themselves „Bestseller of the Year“ (Jonas Kaufmann) or „Classic without Borders“. For this last category there were four winners: violinist Daniel Hope (currently the great star in the classic world), pianist Sebastian Knaur (whom I have heard at the Institut Francais in Berlin), composer Arash Safain and the 12 cellists of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra.

And then of course the prices for the best DVD / Blue Ray and CD recordings.

Pianist Daniil Trifonov, for his recordings with music from the 19th century, the Russian Aida Garifullina (Wiener Staatsoper) and the French Marianne Crébassa in the category (opera-) singing and recitals, and the French cellist Camille Thomas for chamber music recordings. And, of course, my favorite conductor, the Greek Teodor Currentzis, with his Musicaeterna from Prem (Russia) for his recording of Henry Purcell’s „Indian Queen“.

My recognition for the best performance of the evening goes to the young South African singer Pretty Yende – a magical voice! She now lives in Milan and has already made guest appearances at all the major opera houses in the world. For example at Staatsoper Berlin in 2015, where she was to be heard in „L’elisir d’amore“ by Donizetti.

So if you are looking for a Christmas present for classic lovers, you will definitely find here something.
