Benefit gala “Ballet for Life” in support of Ukraine

By Holger Jacobs

A wonderful ballet evening for a good cause with dancers from all over Europe

Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine a year ago, many relief efforts have been launched to help the people of this distressed country. First, of course, of a military and financial nature through an alliance of western states.

But artists all over the world also wanted to contribute to supporting Ukraine, even if this is only possible on a much smaller scale.

The principal dancer of the Staatsballett Berlin, IANA SALENKO, who was born in the Ukraine and trained in a ballet school in Donetsk, also wanted to do something to help her country in these difficult times. Likewise the solo dancer of the Berlin State Ballet, OLEKSANDR SHPAK, who comes from Kharkiv/ Ukraine. Together they founded „Ballet for Life“ last year to set a sign of solidarity for people in need, especially children. They were able to inspire many dancers from all over Europe for their cause.

On April 21, 2022, the first „Ballet for Life“ evening took place in Berlin and now last Sunday, April 16, 2023, the second. In each case in the Admiralspalast at Friedrichstrasse station in Berlin-Mitte.

Also noteworthy is the participation of well-known choreographers, such as the new superstar in the dance sky, CHRYSTAL PITE.
Born in Vancouver in 1970, the ballet dancer and choreographer created her first choreography at the age of 19, which was even included in the repertoire of the British Columbia Ballet. Numerous other works followed until today.
For „Ballet for Life“ she showed an excerpt of her choreography „Body and Soul“ for the Opéra National de Paris.

The British dancer and choreographer WAYNE MCGREGOR is also a celebrated star and works as resident choreographer at the Royal Ballet London, from where the duet „Infra“ with the two dancers MAYARA MAGRI and MATTHEW BALL for the „Ballet for Life“ gala comes from.

Choreographer ERIC GAUTHIER doesn’t really need to be introduced. With his company „Gauthier Dance“ from Stuttgart he is actually everywhere. Only recently he choreographed part of the show „ARISE“ in the Friedrichstadtpalast in Berlin (kultur24 reported).
His choreo „Les Adieux“ perhaps most painfully shows the grief and farewell of Ukrainian women who have to let their husbands go to war (see my video).

The French dancer and choreographer ANGELIN PRELJOCAJ brought a spectacular starter to a moving evening with the Pas de Deux „Le Parc“ with IANA SALENKO and MARIAN WALTER from the Staatsballett Berlin (see my video).

Of course, WILLIAM FORSYTHE should also be mentioned with „In the middle, somewhat elevated“ with YOLANDA CORREA from Norway Ballet and ALEJANDRO VIRELLES from the Berlin State Ballet.

And CHRISTIAN SPUK, the new director of the State Ballet, brought an impressive Pas de Trois with “Lontano” from his former place of work, the Zurich Opera House.

At the finale, the principal dancer of the State Ballet Arshak Ghalumyan ARSHAL GHALUMYANpresented his own choreography “Indomitable” as a solo part for ballerina IANA SOLENKO based on a Ukrainian song (see my video).

The audience showed great enthusiasm with standing ovations.
At the end there was a social get-together for all participants with culinary specialties from the Ukraine.

My heartfelt “BRAVO” to all those involved!
