Rückblick auf die 68. Internationalen Filmfestspiele von Berlin
Die wirklich besonderen Augenblicke ergaben sich für mich zweifellos während der Pressekonferenzen im Grand Hyatt Hotel. Hier kamen alle Schauspieler, Regisseure, Produzenten und andere Mitwirkende der Filme zusammen, um der Presse Rede und Antwort zu stehen.
So konnte ich zum ersten Mal „live“ Persönlichkeiten erleben, die ich sonst nur von der Leinwand her kenne. Sehr spannend waren dabei Bill Murray, der immer einen außergewöhnlichen Humor hat, Isabelle Huppert, die immer noch eine faszinierende Frau ist und natürlich Joaquin Phoenix, der wirklich eine große Ausstrahlung besitzt, obwohl er merklich zeigte, dass er zu dieser Pressekonferenz keine große Lust hatte.
Steven Soderbergh mit „Unsane“ im Wettbewerb
Eine ganz besondere Freude war für mich das Wiedersehen mit dem großen Regisseur Steven Soderbergh, der mit Filmen wie „Traffic“ (Oscar für den besten Film), Erin Brokowitch (Oscar für Julia Roberts) und die drei „Ocean’s 11, 12, 13“ berühmt wurde. Ich hatte ihn beim Filmfestival in Cannes 1989 zum ersten Mal kennengelernt, als ich ihn zusammen mit den Kollegen des deutschen Magazins CINEMA interviewte. Er zeigte damals vor 29 Jahren im Wettbewerb von Cannes seinen Erstlingsfilm „Sex, Lies and Videotapes“, mit dem er die Goldene Palme gewann. Jurypräsident in Cannes war damals der deutsche Regisseur Wim Wenders, wie ich schon früher erwähnte. Es war ein außergewöhnliches Festival mit außergewöhnlichen Stars und herausragenden Filmen. Und das ganze bei mediterraner Sonne und den Düften des Frühlings (jedes Jahr im Mai). Das vergisst man nicht.

Hier zum Filmfestival von Berlin 2018 war Steven Soderbergh mit seiner neusten Produktion „Unsane“ eingeladen, ein Thriller über eine junge Frau (Claire Foy), die ohne ihr Einverständnis in eine psychiatrische Klinik eingewiesen wird und ausgerechnet dort ihren Stalker (Joshua Leonard) wiedersieht, der auch noch als Überwachungspersonal in der Klinik arbeitet. Da kann man schon mal durchdrehen…Am Schluss schafft sie es natürlich, aber so richtig konnte der Film mich nicht überzeugen. Es ist ein spannender Krimi, den man freitags Abends im Fernsehen sieht – nicht mehr. Das Besondere: Er ist ausschließlich mit einem iphone gedreht worden. Die neusten Handys mit 4K Auflösung können wohl eine ausreichende Qualität entwickeln. Letztlich kümmert sich der Zuschauer aber nicht um die Technik, sondern interessiert sich mehr für die Geschichte. Und die ist nicht so „dolle“.
Schade, von einem Meister hätte ich mehr erwartet, aber wie Steven Soderbergh selbst in der Pressekonferenz sagte, wäre er nach den vielen Großproduktionen sehr ausgelaugt gewesen und hätte zwischen 2013 und 2017 keinen Film mehr gedreht. „Unsane“ ist der erste nach dieser langen Pause. Vielleicht muss er ja erst einmal wieder „reinkommen“ ins Filmbusiness und zurückfinden zu seinem Genie. Aber es war schön ihn wiedergesehen zu haben.

Ed Sheeran auf der Berlinale mit „Songwriter“
Am letzten Tag kam noch der Superstar der Popszene, Ed Sherran („Shape of You“). Mit 4 Grammys und 5 BRIT Awards ist er einer der ganz großen seiner Branche. Zusammen mit Bruno Mars bilden die beiden zurzeit die Spitze der Pop Charts. Dabei ist er gerade mal 27 Jahre alt. Mittlerweile spielt er auch verschiedentlich bei Filmproduktionen mit, zumeist in kleineren Nebenrollen. So hatte er zuletzt einen Auftritt in der ersten Episode der Staffel 7 bei „Games of Thrones“ und im Film „Bridget Jones Baby“.
Sein Cousin Murray Cummings fragte Ed Sheeran vor einem Jahr, ob er eine Dokumentation über seine künstlerische Arbeit machen dürfe und Sheeran sagte zu. In der Pressekonferenz betonte Sheeran noch einmal, was er für das Schwierigste beim Songschreiben hält: Das Komponieren neuer Phrasen (er sagt wörtlich: „to find phrase you have never heard before“), womit er sicher neue Melodien meinte. Denn man hätte schon so vieles gehört, da würde es schwer fallen wirklich Neues zu komponieren. Und sein größter Star wäre die Sängerin Adele, die er bewundert. Das ganze Interview seht Ihr hier:
Zum Schluss die Zahlen:
Insgesamt wurden 385 Filme gezeigt. 330.000 Tickets wurden verkauft und 21.000 Personen waren zum Festival akkreditiert: Schauspieler, Regisseure, Kameramänner, Kostümbildner, Setdesigner, Agenten, Produzenten, Filmverleiher, Journalisten und Fotografen. Der Europäische Filmmarkt im Martin-Gropius-Bau hatte 546 Aussteller, die 800 Filme zeigte. Ca. 10.000 Besucher kamen zum Filmmarkt.

A short reference to the most interesting moments of the Berlinale 2018
The truly special moments for me were undoubtedly during the press conferences at the Grand Hyatt Hotel. Here all the actors, directors, producers and other contributors of the films came together to answer the press.
For the first time, I was able to experience „live“ personalities that I otherwise only know from the screen. Very exciting were Bill Murray, who always has an extraordinary sense of humor, Isabelle Huppert, who is still a fascinating woman, and of course Joaquin Phoenix, who really has a great charisma, although he clearly showed that he did not really want to go to this press conference.

A special treat for me was the reunion with the great director Steven Soderbergh, who starred in movies like „Traffic“ (Oscar for Best Picture), Erin Brokowitch (Oscar for Julia Roberts) and the three „Ocean’s 11, 12, 13“ became famous. I met him for the first time at the Cannes Film Festival in 1989, when I interviewed him with colleagues from the German magazine CINEMA. He showed his first film „Sex, Lies and Videotapes“ 29 years ago at the Cannes Competition, with which he then won the Golden Palm. The jury president in Cannes at that time was the German director Wim Wenders, as I mentioned earlier. It was an extraordinary festival with extraordinary stars and outstanding films. And all in the Mediterranean sun and the scents of spring (every year in May). You do not forget that.
Here at the Berlin Film Festival in 2018, Steven Soderbergh was invited with his latest production „Unsane“, a thriller about a young woman (Claire Foy), who is admitted to a psychiatric hospital without her consent and just sees her stalker (Joshua Leonard) there again, who works as a surveillance staff in the clinic. At the end she survives, of course, but really the movie could not convince me. It’s an exciting thriller that you see on TV on Fridays – not more. The special feature: the movie was shot with an iphone. The latest mobile phones with 4K resolution can probably develop a sufficient quality. Anyway, the viewer does not care about the technology, but is more interested in the story. And the story is not as good.
Too bad, I would have expected more from a master, but as Steven Soderbergh himself said in the press conference, he would have been very exhausted after the many major productions and stopped filming between 2013 and 2017. „Unsane“ is the first after this long break. Maybe he has to „come in“ again into the business and find his way back to his genius. But it was nice to have seen him again after 29 years.

On the last day came the pop superstar Ed Sherran („Shape of You“). With 4 Grammys and 5 BRIT Awards, he is one of the biggest in the music industry now. Together with Bruno Mars, the two currently make the top of the pop charts. And he is just 27 years old. Meanwhile, he also plays in various film productions, mostly in smaller supporting roles. He recently starred in the first episode of Season 7 on „Games of Thrones“ and in the movie „Bridget Jones Baby.“
His cousin Murray Cummings asked Ed Sheeran a year ago if he could do a documentary about his artistic work, and Sheeran agreed. In the press conference, Sheeran once again emphasized what he considers the most difficult part of songwriting: composing new phrases, which he certainly meant to mean new tunes. Because you would have heard so much, it would be difficult to really write something new. And his biggest star would be the singer Adele, whom he admires. Finally, the result:
A total of 385 films were shown. 330,000 tickets were sold. 21,000 people were accredited to the festival: actors, directors, cinematographers, costume designers, set designers, agents, producers, film distributors, journalists and photographers. The European film market in the Martin-Gropius-Bau had 546 exhibitors, which showed 800 films. Approximately 10,000 visitors came to the film market.
