Natural wine and Italian food at Helmholtzplatz in a cozy living room atmosphere. Home outside.

Hidden behind thick ivy lies the bistro run by the owner of the same name, Rita Caravaggi. A restaurant with a focus on natural wines and seasonal products from small Italian producers – not another one in that trendy, hip Scandinavian look, but rather in a rustic trattoria style: candles in wax-dripped wine bottles adorn the dark solid wood tables, lush plants and wooden shelves surrounding the dining room, filled with the varied assortment of wines. Ceramics, books and much more that contribute to a cozy living room atmosphere. Yes, there is even a piano!

In Efeu gehüllt.

Tucked away

The menu is seasonally adjusted. At the beginning of autumn, thy served a variation of the Parmigiana di melanzane. Instead of thin, layered slices here in the form of half an eggplant, filled with preserved cherry tomatoes and baked with smoked scamorza. Scamorza is an Italian scalded cheese made from cow’s milk, which after brewing in hot water lies in a brine and is then hung on a string to dry and mature. The smoky cheese with the sweetness of the tomatoes on the slightly tart eggplant complemented each other perfectly!

The salmon tartare was also great, garnished with wafer-thin, lightly blanched, yet crispy fresh apple slices and beetroot powder. A very successful idea to combine a greasy fish with fresh and mildly sour apple.

The piano didn’t just remain a mere feast for the eyes. As an intermezzo, a freelance artist played a few of his compositions for the guests, accompanying the meal. These small performances by acquainted musicians used to take place more regularly, but due to complaints from the neighbors Rita unfortunately had to cut back on them a bit. But with a little luck, this beautiful meal accompaniment will be enjoyed more often again.

The two intermediate dishes, traditionally pasta or rice, were also convincing. The tagliatelle with shrimp in a shrimp bisque, seasoned with lime juice and zest, were excellent and tasted very special. Until the last bit I just couldn’t figure out exactly what precisely that „certain something“ was.

The pumpkin and kumquat (dwarf orange) risotto was also a fantastic combination. The risotto was perfectly creamy, almost liquid – not as dry as it is unfortunately often the case outside of Italy – slightly sweet due to the pumpkin, and spiced up by the tart-sweet, sour-bitter kumquat and finally rounded off with a nutty pumpkin seed oil. This made the risotto very lively. Every bite tasted different. No monotony.

The natural wines that were served, mostly from Sicily, were very tasty. Firstly, the Pet-Nat, as well as the white wine from the NOÛS winery, with their fullness, the light honey notes of the ripe fruits and the minerality of the volcanic earth, went very well with the season and the above-mentioned dishes.

Happy & satisfied.

A really cozy restaurant, unpretentious and rather quiet, it invites you to long, tasty evenings. Ideal for the upcoming winter. Home outside.
