„INTRIGE“ („J‘ accuse“) – Drama – Frankreich – 2019
Regie: Roman Polanski
Cast: Jean Dujardin, Mathieu Amalric, Louis Garrel, Emmanuelle Seignier
Filmverleih: Weltkino

Weiterhin laufen an:

„Birds of Prey: The Emancipation of Harley Quinn“ von Cathy Yan.

„INTIRIGE“ („J ‚accuse“) – Drama – France – 2019
Director: Roman Polanski
Cast: Jean Dujardin, Mathieu Amalric, Louis Garrel, Emmanuelle Seignier
Film Distribution: World Cinema
We know that artistic geniuses are not automatically nice, sympathetic people, since the #MeToo movement has made more and more evidence of sexual abuse known in the world of film and art. What used to be shrugged as a „cast couch“ was more or less taken for granted is now being pilloried.
The names of two famous directors keep coming up:
Woody Allen and Roman Polanski.
Woody Allen for his unclear relationship with his stepchildren (one of whom he even married) during his marriage to Mia Farrow.
And Roman Polanski for the rape in 1977 of the then 13-year-old Samantha Geimer, whom he had pretended to take pictures for the french VOGUE and make her drunk with alcohol during a photo shoot and assaulted her.
Just a year earlier, in the summer of 1976, Roman Polanski spent a few months in Munich staging the „Rigoletto“ opera for the Bavarian State Opera. He let the gossip columnist Michael Graeter arrange for pretty young girls, who he then brought to Polanski’s hotel room. By the way, one of them was Nastassja Kinski …
What nobody can dispute is Roman Polanski’s talent for making great movies.
Already his graduation film at the film school in Lodz (Poland) „The knife in the water“, 1963, is a masterpiece and was even nominated for an Oscar.
Perhaps not a masterpiece, but an extremely worth seeing film is „J’accuse“ (German title: „Intrigue“), which he shot at various locations in France after the novel „An Officer and a Spy“ by Robert Harris.
Polanski and Harrys also wrote the screenplay for the film together.

„J ‚Accuse“ is about the famous Dreyfuss affair, in which a French general at the end of the 19th century was innocently convicted because of his Jewish belief of being a supposed German spy and banished to life on Devil’s Island in French Guiana (where by the way the book „Papillon“ by Henri Charrière – filmed in 1973 with Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman – plays).
Roman Polanski tells the story of the Dreyfus affair like an exciting thriller. The film begins with the condemnation and degradation of Alfred Dreyfus for espionage for the enemy. After the conviction, a member of the French General staff, Marie-Georges Picquart (Jean Dujardin), appointed new Secret Service chief. Exactly in the department that claims to have discovered Dreyfus‘ alleged betrayal.
Picquart, who is actually not a friend of Dreyfus, discovers that the evidence against Dreyfus has been manipulated or simply invented.
It’s a traitor at the French Secret Service who regularly sends courier information to the German ambassador in Paris – even after Dreyfus has arrived on Devil’s Island.
Picquart believes it is his duty to uncover the case. But he encounters great resistance. Only when he inaugurates important friends from the intellectual upper class of Paris and the famous writer Émile Zola then publishes a public letter to the President of the Republic in a large daily newspaper, title „J ‚Accuse“, does the scandal become public. Alfred Dreyfus is acquitted in an appeal and the conspirators are arrested. Marie-Georges Picquart, excellently played by Oscar winner Jean Dujardin („The Artist“), was later even appointed Minister of Defense of France.
Conclusion: worth seeing! For the whole family

Also starts in the cinema:
„Birds of Prey: The Emancipation of Harley Quinn“ by Cathy Yan. Sequel of the „Suicide Squad“ comic, again with Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, who also acts as a producer here. It is about a diamond that contains valuable information. Other heroines, such as Huntress and Black Canary, are at Harley’s side. The evil Roman Sionis is played by Ewan McCregor, the cop Montoya by Rosie Perez.
The story is a bit of a confusion, but good action and a gorgeous Margot Robbie and a convincing Ewan McGregor.
Only something for fans of the genre.
