„For there is always light.
If only we’are brave
Enough to see it.
If only we’ are brave
enough to be it.“

Was da wohl drin steht?

The extraordinary inauguration of Joe Biden

By Holger Jacobs

01/21/2021

Joe Biden’s inauguration on January 20, 2021 will go down in the history books.

Nothing on that day was like any other day of inaugurations, which has been celebrated in a similar way for over 200 years.

Just a week earlier, thousands of violent Trump supporters stood on the steps of the Capitol and tried to break into the building with fists and sticks to prevent Joe Biden from being elected as 46th President of the United States. The mob refused to admit that he had legitimately won an election confirmed by all the courts only 2 months earlier. Incited by a president who shortly before yelled at a rally in front of the White House in front of tens of thousands of Trump fans ready for anything into the crowd: „We will all together go to he Capitol Hill and we will fight like hell“ (Wir werden go to Capitol Hill together and fight like hell). What happened next is history: The attack on Capitol Hill (Kultur24 reported).

Just a week later, exactly those people who have been insulted by the mob are gathering in the same place: Joe Biden and Kamala Harris to take their oath of office as President and Vice President of the United States, respectively.
Due to the corona virus, only about 1000 guests are invited with them (at Barack Obama 2009 there were about 200,000 people who stood up at the Lincoln Memorial), seated in front of the building at a certain distance. Upstairs, on the balcony, where the ceremony took place, around 100 people stood or sat, including close friends of the new president and his new vice president and three former US presidents with their wives (George W. Bush, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama).
Hilary Clinton had also come, who now attended the inauguration of the Democratic Party candidate who had succeeded in driving the hated Donald Trump out of his office. She came with visible satisfaction. This day was her day too.

In the morning, just 3 hours before, Donald Trump had disappeared from the White House (see our picture series).
He went all alone (the rest of the family had already moved out the day before) with his wife Melania across the green lawn to the waiting helicopter who took him to Andrew Airbase, from where he was definitely the last time flown with the Air Force One to Florida .
The famous black suitcase of the Secret Service, in which the codes for the nuclear weapons are kept, caused some confusion.
Normally, the suitcase is handed over „in person“ at the meeting with the old and the new president in the White House.
But this time it won’t happen. So the suitcase first flew with Donald Trump to Florida.
At noon, at the time of Joe Biden’s inauguration, the old codes were erased and new codes created, which the newly elected President received when he entered the White House that afternoon. I cannot say whether this would have meant that the US would have been unable to launch its nuclear weapons for a few hours. But there was a possibility.

On the balcony of the Capitol, however, the mood was cheerful and no one wanted to deal with the gloomy past anymore.
The program was then carried out quickly in accordance with the formalities.
First Lady Gaga (in a large red robe inspired by Elsa Schiaparelli of the 50s) sang the national anthem.
Then Kamala Harris was the first woman since the founding of the USA to take the oath for the office of Vice President.
Then came R&B singer Jennifer Lopez with two songs.

And the decisive moment came: Joseph R. Biden jr. (* 1942) took the oath as the 46th President of the USA.
At the end there was a song by the country singer Garth Brooks, who is very famous in the United States (perhaps as a reminiscence of the old, white America).

But most of the attention was drawn to a 22-year-old poet, Amanda Gorman!
Her performance was the highlight of the day. With wonderful poetic words like this:
“For there is always light. If only we’are braveEnough to see it. If only we’re brave enough to be it. “
She was able to inspire all spectators.
This Harvard University Sociology student’s performance was also remarkable because it was so unexpected. Usually the program of such an event is almost always the same: a few meaningful speeches, a few great singing stars of American show business give their best and in between the oaths are taken.

But that a 22-year-old, smartly dressed in PRADA, has such an impact on the entire watching community, is not often. Her Twitter account went from 99,000 to 1.2 million followers within 24 hours. Like Joe Biden herself, she had a speech disorder at a young age and had to slowly get rid of stuttering herself.
To recite her poem, she practiced loudly at home for days, as she told a TIMES reporter. If you want to hear your speech, you can find it her performance here on YouTube.
The internet was of course full of her and the inauguration.
You can find some posts from Instagram here in our picture series:

Joe Biden’s speech was of course eagerly awaited:
In his speech, Joe Biden emphasized, as expected, the unity of the country and the bridging of differences.
Confrontations should not be waged like wars, but rather discussed with arguments. Only a united country is a strong country that can face the challenges of the future.
His voice rose as he angrily spoke of the many lies over the past four years.
These lies had only one aim: to strengthen the power of a single man!
I particularly liked his hint that exactly 108 years ago a group of women demonstrated here at the Capitol Hill, who demanded the right to vote for women in the USA. Today, more than a century later, a woman is sworn in as Vice President at this point. And she will certainly not be the last!

Finally, about 4 hours later, Joe Biden could move into the White House with his family.
The couple stopped in front of the steps to the great gate, embraced each other and waved at the cameras.
Normally, the new presidential couple would receive the old one here and a small tea ceremony would follow, ending at the helicopter saying goodbye to the previous couple.
But Trump had already disappeared to Florida at this point. But the Biden couple will certainly have been happy that the beautiful atmosphere was not spoiled by a rotten Trump.

Allegedly, Trump Joe Biden even left a long letter on the desk in the Oval Office.
What is in there? We do not know it.
At the end it doesn’t matter anymore.

In the evening there was a glamorous show program (corona-related without an audience alone in front of the Lincoln Memorial) with artists who all did not want to perform at Trump:
Bruce Springsteen, John Legend, Justin Timberlake and Katy Perry, moderated by Tom Hanks.
A gigantic fireworks completed the event (see also our series of pictures below).

Oh, maybe a last word about Lady Gaga’s outfit:
She had attached a large brooch in the shape of a bird, which, perhaps not entirely unintentionally, was reminiscent of the pin in the shape of a mocking jay,   worn by Katniss Everdeen (played by Jennifer Lawrenc) in the fantasy drama „The Hunger Games,“
A young woman fighting against the evil – and she wins!

Here is our picture series with 17 photos from yesterday at the Capitol Hill:
