Vier Tänzer vom Ensemble des Staatsballetts zeigen eigene Choreographien
Das Jahr 2020 hatte für das Staatsballett Berlin dramatisch angefangen.
Kaum im Amt, verabschiedeten sich im Januar unerwartet die beiden Intendanten, Sasha Waltz und Johannes Öhmann.
Und schon einen Monat später kündigte sich mit den ersten Todesfällen auf Grund eines neuen Virus-Typs, Covid 19, eine weitere Katastrophe an:
Ab dem 20. März 2020 wurde von der Bundesregierung in Berlin ein allgemeiner Lockdown in ganz Deutschland beschlossen, der jede Form von Begegnungen verhindern sollte.
Der Lockdown bedeutete, dass es von heute auf morgen keine Kulturveranstaltungen mehr gab, weder Oper, Theater oder Ballett.
Auch die vielen Tänzer*innen des Staatsballetts waren plötzlich ohne Auftritt und durften noch nicht einmal mehr zum Training gehen.
Als es dann im Sommer wieder eingeschränkt losging, war das gesamte Ballett-Programm mit den vorgesehenen Premieren über den Haufen geworfen.
Die kommissarische Intendantin Dr. Christiane Theobald hatte eine Idee:
Mehrere Mitglieder des Ensembles hatten immer schon eigene Choreographien entwickelt.
Warum diese nicht einmal vor einem größeren Publikum präsentieren?
Jetzt war die Zeit für neue Ideen und neue Kreationen gekommen:
Unter dem Titel „FROM BERLIN WITH LOVE“ (kultur24 berichtete) wurden zunächst bereits etablierte Choreographien, wie „Ein Sommernachtstraum“ von Heinz Spoerli, mit neuen Choreographien von Ensemble-Mitgliedern, wie „LOOK OUT FROM THE SILENCE“ von Alexander Abdukarimov, in einer Aufführung am 27. August 2020 gemischt.
Insgesamt folgten bis Juni 2021 noch drei weitere „From Berlin with Love“ – Ausgaben.
Angeregt durch den großen Erfolg der „From Berlin with Love“ Reihe entwickelte Christiane Theobald parallel dazu die Serie „LAB_WORKS“, die nun ausschließlich Arbeiten der Tänzer und Tänzerinnen des Staatsballetts zeigen sollten.
Der erste Abend zu dieser Serie kam am 3. September 2020 und zeigte wunderbare Choreographien, wie „WAVES OF FLESH“ (<200.000 views auf meinem Youtube Kanal) von Dana Pajarillaga und Lukas Malkoski oder „THE PARLIAMENT“ (<200.000 views auf meinem Youtube Kanal) von Johnny McMillan (kultur24 berichtete).
Natürlich war nicht jede Arbeit ein Genie-Streich, aber die Qualität konnte sich durchaus sehen lassen.
Schließlich war der Schritt in die Choreographie für viele noch völlig neu.
LAB_WORKS II“
Am 26. Mai 2022 folgte nun der zweite Teil dieser Serie mit neuen Choreographien von Mitgliedern des Staatsballetts.
Das Besondere dabei: Die Einbindung junger Tanz-Talente der Staatlichen Ballettschule Berlin.
Eine weitere Idee von Christiane Theobald konnte realisiert werden:
Für Tänzer*innen der Abschlussklasse der Ballettschule einen Übergang zu schaffen zwischen Schulbetrieb und der echten Arbeit in einem renommierten Ballett-Ensemble:
Das „ENHANCE MENTORSHIP PROGRAMME“ war geboren.
Die 16 als „Fellows“ bezeichneten jungen Tänzerinnen und Tänzer werden u. a. von dem Solotänzer des Staatsballetts Arshak Ghalumyan betreut, der auch die künstlerische Leitung für „LAB_WORKS II“ übernahm.
Die „Fellows“:
Vienna Pokorny, Giulia Scognamillo, Chisato Inko, Shino Tsurutani und Maria Valter. Sowie Lorenzo Fernandes, Masaaki Goto, Jun Ishii, Hugo Martinez, Linus Schmidt und Vantell-Boateng Smith.

Die Choreographien:
„CHILDREN OF THE NIGHT“ von Alexander Abdukarimov.
Der aus Moskau stammende Abdukarimov ist seit 2014 beim Staatsballett und zeigte, wie oben beschrieben, bereits seine Choreographien „Look out from the Silence“, und „Control Shift“.
Seine neuste Arbeit „Children oft the night“ ist tänzerisch wieder sehr klassisch, auf Spitze getanzt mit Arabesken und Attituden und Stilrichtungen eines Nacho Duato (früherer Intendant des Staatsballetts Berlin). Mit der Musik von Antonio Vivaldi und dem Zeitgenossen Max Richter wird das klassische Erscheinungsbild noch vertieft. Dabei aber (zum Glück) keine Tutu-Röcke mehr, sondern transparente kurze Kleider für die Damen und transparente Anzüge für die Herren. Optisch auf jeden Fall ein Hingucker! „OH CAPTAIN“ von Johnny McMillan.
Der aus Kanada stammende Tänzer ist seit 2018 in der Kompanie und war vorher im Ensemble von Sasha Waltz & Guests. Seine erste Choreographie „The Parliament“ von 2020 hatte mir besonders gut gefallen (Siehe Video-Trailer). Diese neue Arbeit konnte mich aber nicht überzeugen: eine Gruppe von acht Tänzern bewegt sich im Zeitlupentempo, während McMillan selbst im Hintergrund bis kurz vor Ende stehend nach oben schaut. Erst zum Schluss kommt Bewegung auf und McMillan beginnt eine Art Veitstanz bis zur Exstase.

„THIS TOO SHALL PASS“ von Vivian Assal Koohnagard.
Die aus Göteborg stammende Tänzerin ist seit 2018 im Corps de Ballet und kommt aus der Hamburger Ballettschule.
Ihre Choreographie ist eine Hymne an die Weiblichkeit. Acht Tänzerinnen umschwärmen wie Bienen eine purpurfarbene Königin, die in einem Morphsuit (Ganzkörperanzug) mit großen Schwingen daherkommt und die Gruppe antreibt (Photos in der Bilderserie am Ende des Artikels).
Zusammen mit der psychedelischen Musik der US-amerikanischen Gruppe Khruangbin (bekannt durch ihre langen Perücken), den iranischen Klängen von Kourosh Yaghmaei und der New Wave Musik der Band Tom Tom Club mit ihrem bezeichnenden Titel „Lesbians by the Lake“ aus ihrem Album „The Good, the Bad and the Funky“ (welches ebenfalls sehr orientalisch klingt), wird eine fröhlich-heitere Stimmung erzeugt, die jeden mitreißt.

„DIE NACHT“ von Arshal Ghalumyan.
Der aus Armenien stammende Solotänzer und Prix de Lausanne Finalist von 2002 ist schon seit 2004 beim Staatsballett Berlin und beginnt langsam seine Choreographen-Karriere. Nach „Musa“ (2017), „Mare Crisium“ (2020), „C-020“ (2020) und „Promenades“ (2021) ist „Die Nacht“ schon seine fünfte Arbeit. Seine Erfahrung und sein Talent sind sofort sichtbar. Ausgehend von einer Skulptur von Georg Kolbe befinden sich 11 Tänzer*innen in einem Raum, welcher von neun Spiegeln in Rautenform überdacht wird und in denen sich die Figuren vielfältig spiegeln. Mal allein, mal als Gruppe oder alle zusammen wird in verschiedenen Techniken getanzt, die ganz wunderbar den Weg von der Klassik in die Moderne zeigen.
Hier können die jungen „Fellows“ ihre ganze Stärke zeigen. Toll!

Fazit: Ein guter Abend für spannende Experimente.
Besonders positiv aufgefallen sind mir die „Fellows“ Vienna Pokorny, Lorenzo Fernandes und Jun Ishii.

“LAB_WORKS“ from the Berlin State Ballet

Four dancers from the ensemble of the Staatsballett show their own choreographies
The year 2020 had started dramatically for the Staatsballett Berlin.
Barely in office, the two directors, Sasha Waltz and Johannes Öhmann, unexpectedly said goodbye in January 2020.
And just one month later, another catastrophe was announced with the first deaths due to a new type of virus, Covid 19:
From March 20, 2020, the federal government decided on a general lockdown throughout Germany, which prohibited any form of performances in the creative world.
The lockdown meant that overnight there were no more cultural events, neither opera, theater nor ballet.
The many dancers of the State Ballet were suddenly without a performance and were not even allowed to go to training.
When the restart came in summer 2020 (still with some restrictions), the entire ballet-program with the planned premieres was thrown overboard.
The interims director Dr. Christiane Theobald had an idea:
several members of the ensemble had always developed their own choreographies.
Why not present them to a larger audience?
Now the time had come for new ideas and new creations:
Under the title „FROM BERLIN WITH LOVE“ (kultur24 reported), established choreographies such as „A Midsummer Night’s Dream“ by Heinz Spoerli were combined with new choreographies by ensemble members such as “ Look out from the silence” by Alexander Abdukarimov, mixed in a performance on August 27, 2020.
A total of three more „From Berlin with Love“ editions followed until June 2021.
Stimulated by the great success of the „From Berlin with Love“ series, Christiane Theobald developed the „LAB_WORKS“ series at the same time, which should now exclusively show works by the dancers of the Staatsballett.
The first evening of this series came on September 3, 2020 and showed wonderful choreographies such as „WAVES OF FLESH“ (<200.000 views on my Youtube Channel) by Dana Pajarillaga and Lukas Malkoski or „THE PARLIAMENT“ (<200.000 views on my Youtube channel) by Johnny McMillan (kultur24 reported).
Of course, not every work was a stroke of genius, but the quality was quite impressive. After all, the step into choreography was still completely new for many.
LAB_WORKS II“
The second part of this series followed last week on May 26, 2022 with new choreographies by members of the State Ballet.
The special thing about it: the integration of young dance talents from the Berlin State Ballet School.
Another idea of Christiane Theobald was realized:
To create a transition for dancers in the final year of the ballet school between school and real work in a renowned ballet ensemble:
The „ENHANCE MENTORSHIP PROGRAMME“ was born.
The 16 young dancers designated as “Fellows” will be mentored (among others) by the principal dancer of the Staatsballett Arshak Ghalumyan, who also took over the artistic direction for „LAB_WORKS II“.
The „Fellows“:
Vienna Pokorny, Giulia Scognamillo, Chisato Inko, Shino Tsurutani and Maria Valter. As well as Lorenzo Fernandes, Masaaki Goto, Jun Ishii, Hugo Martinez, Linus Schmidt and Vantell-Boateng Smith.

The choreographies:
„CHILDREN OF THE NIGHT“ by Alexander Abdukarimov.
Abdukarimov, who comes from Moscow, has been with the State Ballet since 2014 and, as described above, has already shown his choreographies „Look out from the Silence“ and „Control Shift“.
His latest work now „Children often the night“ is again very classical in terms of dancing.
Danced to the point with arabesques and attitudes and styles of a Nacho Duato (former director of the Berlin State Ballet).
With the music of Antonio Vivaldi and the contemporary Max Richter, the classical appearance is further deepened.
But (fortunately) no more tutu skirts, but transparent short dresses for the women and transparent suits for the men.
Definitely an eye-catcher! More photos in the picture series at the end of the article.

„OH CAPTAIN“ by Johnny McMillan.
The Canadian dancer has been with the company since 2018 and was previously in the ensemble of Sasha Waltz & Guests.
I particularly liked his first choreography „The Parliament“ from 2020 (see video trailer).
This new work didn’t convince me though: a group of eight dancers move in slow motion while McMillan himself looks up in the background, standing until just before the end.
It is only at the end that there is movement and McMillan begins a kind of crazy dance to the point of ecstasy.

„THIS TOO SHALL PASS“ by Vivian Assal Koohnagard.
The Swedish dancer has been in the Corps de Ballet since 2018 and comes from the Hamburg Ballet School.
Her choreography is a hymn to femininity. Eight dancers swarm like bees around a purple queen, who comes in a morphsuit (body suit) with large wings and drives the group on. (Photos in the picture series at the end of the article).
Together with the psychedelic music of the US group Khruangbin (known for their long wigs), the Iranian sounds of Kourosh Yaghmaei and the new wave music of the band Tom Tom Club with their special title „Lesbians by the Lake“ from their album „The Good, the Bad and the Funky” (which also sounds very oriental), a cheerful mood is created that moves everybody in the audience.

„THE NIGHT“ by Arshal Ghalumyan.
The Armenian solo dancer and Prix de Lausanne finalist in 2002 has been with the Staatsballett Berlin since 2004 and is slowly beginning his career as a choreographer.
After „Musa“ (2017), „Mare Crisium“ (2020), „C-020“ (2020) and „Promenades“ (2021), „Die Nacht“ is his fifth work.
His experience and talent are immediately apparent. Based on a sculpture by Georg Kolbe, 11 dancers are in a room covered by nine rhombus-shaped mirrors, in which the figures are reflected in a variety of ways.
Sometimes alone, sometimes in a group or all together, the acres performe in different techniques, which wonderfully show the way from classic to modern (photos in the series of pictures at the end of the article).
Here the young „Fellows“ can show their full strength. Great!

Conclusion: A good evening for exciting experiments.
The „Fellows“ Vienna Pokorny, Lorenzo Fernandes and Jun Ishii made a particularly positive impression on me.
